The James H. McBride Arboretum Board members for 2011 are (L. to R.) Mark Charville, Patti Smith, Tom Roberts, Pat Tinker, and Mike Heydinger The James McBride Arboretum is located on the campus of BGSU Firelands College off Rye Beach Road in Huron Township. The Board recently completed a new entrance to the arboretum off Boos Road, a new parking lot, and public restroom facilities for visitors to the arboretum. A dedication ceremony will be held later this spring, at which time the facilities will be fully opened to the public. The Board is now embarking upon a form of strategic planning to continue improving its facilities. In conjunction with Erie MetroParks, additional themed gardens, more family friendly activities, more nature education programs for youth, and eventually a larger visitor’s center and all-purpose structure are some of the new ideas being considered. Future plans also call for expanding the body of volunteers and creating a Friends of the Arboretum group to assist the Board in its endeavors. The arboretum expansion is funded through grants, corporate donations, and the generosity of those committed to an improved quality of life in the Firelands area. The long range goal of the James H. McBride Arboretum Board, the Erie MetroParks, and Firelands Campus BGSU is to continue cooperating as it expands the campus-within-an-arboretum. The newly elected officers and their fellow Board members are committed to achieving this goal.
