Woodlands Student To Be Published in National Magazine A 6th grade Gifted Language Arts student, Elizabeth Mills, learned recently her poem; “Artemis” will be published in an upcoming issue of the national magazine, Creative Kids. Earlier in the school year the students of Mr. Dale Casper’s 6th Grade Gifted Language Arts Class had focused their studies on a section of Creative Writing. One unit within this section included poetry. The students were asked to write forty to fifty poems creating a book out of their best fifteen to MILLS
twenty works of art. Upon completion of this assignment the students were asked to select what they thought was their “best” work for submission to a contest in Creative Kids magazine. “All of the students did a fantastic job with their books!” stated Dale Casper, Gifted Intervention Specialist. “To be chosen by this publication is an accomplishment,” he continued. The magazine is geared toward gifted students between the ages of 8 and 16. Being a national magazine the competition is tough; therefore, the guidelines are very rigid. Materials for submission include cartoons, songs, short essays, puzzles, photographs, artwork, games, editorials, poetry, and plays.

BY JOHN MAJOY, HURON POLICE CHIEF Now that spring is rapidly approaching, the Huron Police Department would like to send a reminder to residents regarding junk vehicles. A junk vehicle is defined as a dismantled, non-operating, wrecked or abandoned vehicle. Huron City Ordinance 523.03 prohibits junk vehicles from being on public or private property. This excludes commercial garages, repair shops or used car dealers. If the Huron Police Department receives a complaint regarding a junk vehicle we will contact the property owner and allow him or her 21 days to remove the vehicle. If, after 21 days, the vehicle is not removed, the property owner will be issued a citation for the violation and a subsequent violation for every day thereafter until the vehicle is removed. Residents are encouraged to contact the Huron Police Department if they suspect such a violation is happening or if they have questions concerning this ordinance. Looking ahead to April, the Huron Police Department will be hosting a free “shredding” event for residents and businesses. This will consist of a large shredding truck that is used to destroy paper documents. The purpose behind this is to promote our community policing efforts toward identity theft and to encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to shred confidential and other documents containing personal information. Watch for an upcoming press release with the date and time of this event. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas for future articles, feel free to contact the Huron Police Department at (419)433-4114 or via e-mail at huronpolice@cityofhuron.org.

Elizabeth’s winning poem, “Artemis” was written this past fall. She focused on one of her favorite themes, Greek mythology. In addition to writing about subjects she enjoys, she also finds great pleasure in illustrating her poetry. “Artemis” is a Haiku. A Haiku poem is composed of three unrhymed lines, stated Elizabeth. Haiku poetry usually focuses on nature while describing images. When Elizabeth is not in class writing poetry, she is often found on the tennis courts, as she is an avid tennis player. She also enjoys playing the piano and the flute. In her quiet time she enjoys reading and drawing. Congratulations to Elizabeth for being selected to be published by the Creative Kids magazine.
