Herbert C. Jackson Opens 2010 Shipping Season BY SHEILA EHRHARDT, DIRECTOR HURON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The first lake freighter of the 2010 shipping season arrived in Huron Sunday evening, drawing a crowd of onlookers at it slowly made its way south along the river to the Huron Ore Dock’s slip. The Herbert C. Jackson, a 660-foot, selfunloading ship, was carrying 22,000 tons of iron ore pellets from Silver Bay, Minn. It was the first shipment that has come into the local dock since October 2008.

“We’ve waited a long time for a shipment and are thrilled that things are finally looking up in the national economy,” said Carol Herzog, widow of the late Walter Herzog who reopened the local docks in 1994. Dock employees load the pellets onto railroad cars and they are transported to eastern steel mills operated by Severstahl-Wheeling Pitt. The ore docks brought a great many immigrants to Huron in the 1880s; here they were able to make a good living. The docks were

Huron’s largest local industry until the lake freighters began installing self-unloading equipment. Nearly a century after they began operations, the docks closed in 1985. The first ship since 2008 arrived at the dock around 9 p.m. after gingerly making its way down the river, and successfully making a tight turn into the slip. By 1:30 a.m., the Jackson and its crew of nearly two dozen sailors headed back out into the lake to pick up another load. It is expected back in Huron at about 1 p.m., Monday, May 24.

Walleye Fishermen to Descend on Huron About 250 fishermen are coming to town this Saturday, May 22, to compete in the Spring Fish Huron Ohio Walleye Challenge. More than $10,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to the expected 60 teams of anglers. FHO is made up of a group of local businessmen who are devoted to spreading the word regarding one of the greatest fresh water fisheries in North America. The Fish Huron Ohio group aims to change that fishing is an area of the Huron economy that has long been overlooked. This is the second Walleye Challenge sponsored by FHO and it is just one aspect of their goal of marketing Huron as a place where fishermen can land award-winning catches. Boat inspection will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday at the boat basin, and then the

65 boats of all sizes will take off through the Huron River and into the lake at 8 a.m. Weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the boat basin amphitheatre, with $500 and $300 awards going out to the anglers who catch the two biggest walleyes, in addition to the field payout. The new modern launch facility on the Huron River, provided by the state, will be used by many of these anglers to launch their boats. The Fish Huron Ohio group is looking forward to the dedication of the new ramps, which is planned for late June. These ramps will offer the city the opportunity to better serve its visitors while meeting all their fishing needs. The public is invited to come down to Weigh in from last falls tournament.
