A Taste of Wine & Roses
Page 3
Some exciting surprises are planned at ”A Taste of Wine & Roses,” set for Friday, June 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Barnes Nursery. This 6th annual event, a fundraiser sponsored by the Huron Chamber of Commerce, has become a summer tradition for Huronites and visitors alike. A huge, white domed tent from Witt Rental is transformed into a veritable garden of flowers and greenery and Mesenburg Catering creates taste-tempting hors d’oeuvres. A special musical surprise is planned and Terri Bergman, of The Kitchen’s Bounty, (www.kitchensbounty.com) will be joining the festivities to debut her new gourmet product line, including the Triple Chocolate “Reserve Biscotti,” specifically created as a compliment to a fine glass of wine.

Bergman will host a tableside cooking demo and samples of its custom gourmet products . . . deliciously designed for the adventurous gourmet, will be available to guests. Groups of eight can now purchase a table of their own for $200 and will receive two bottles of wine. Purchasing the first two tickets for this year’s event were two visitors from Phoenix, Arizona, who had heard good things about the evening’s activities during a visit to Huron last year. A commemorative etched wine glass is included in the $20 pre-sale ticket. They are available at the Chamber office, 509 Huron St., and at Barnes Nursery, 3511 Cleveland Road W. Tickets are $25 at the door.
The Great American Porches of Huron’s Old Plat By Lisa Yako Picture this: a hot summer day, a fresh lake breeze, and the chirp of crickets and the song of cicadas. Next, add a dose of tangy lemonade to be shared with good friends. Where would you place this scene? For me, the perfect setting is a beautiful front porch equipped with a squeaky swing and some wicker furniture. For centuries, Americans stayed in touch with friends and neighbors while staying cool on their front porches. The exact origin of the porch is unknown. In America, the addition of a front porch took hold first in the South where its function was two-fold: to cool the house by sheltering the interior rooms, and to provide a place for all social classes to relax and escape the intense heat of the sun. Following the Industrial Revolution (1820-1870), porches became more commonplace due to

greater affluence and machines that made building a house less difficult. In addition, shorter workdays afforded Americans more time to enjoy their families and their homes, while also enjoying the outdoors. In Huron’s Old Plat neighborhood, the houses with the most impressive porches appeared during the Victorian Period (18401900). These porches typically contained elaborate spindle work and were often painted with multiple colors. Porches, which provide a link to the outdoors, fit well with the Victorian Period’s emphasis on healthful living and outdoor activities. Further, the rapid spread of tuberculosis during this period drove people outside in the pursuit of fresh air. In subsequent years, the popularity of the front porch continued as house styles changed. Most houses for the next 50 years after the Victorian era contained

porches. In the Old Plat, front porches are also found on houses built in the American Foursquare and Craftsman styles. As our modern society progressed and air conditioning and televisions became more common, people withdrew to the indoors. In addition, houses in the post World War II society were being mass-produced without much regard for ‘extra’ architectural elements. People began to crave their privacy and no longer used their porches as a means of staying in touch with neighbors. Though porches did make a comeback for a brief time period, it is doubtful whether they will ever regain the importance they

once held. Interestingly, there is a movement to re-establish the popularity of front porches and some planned neighborhoods are even requiring front porches as a means of neighbors connecting with one another. All in all, front porches remain a beautiful reminder of a simpler time and beckon us to sit down and watch the world go by.

Using an IPOD or MP3 Player and Driving Don’t Mix
By Judge Bill Steuk, Huron Municipal Court On occasion, drivers of motor vehicles might want to listen to their IPod or MP-3 players instead of the vehicle’s installed sound system. The problem is in using earphones. The Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.84 prohibits an operator of a motor vehicle from wearing earphones or earplugs in both ears. This section defines earphones as any headset, radio, tape player, or other similar device that provides a listener with radio programs, music, or other recorded information through a device attached to the head that covers all or a portion of both ears. Using a player that can be hooked up to the vehicle’s speaker system is permitted as long as the volume is set at appropriate levels. This section of the Ohio Revised Code excludes speakers or other listening devices that are built into a protective headgear. This enables motorcyclists to use communication devices in their helmets. The section does have other exclusions that would
not be considered earphones or earplugs. These includes the following: a hearing aid; earphones or earplugs used by law enforcement personnel while on duty; fire department and emergency medical service personnel while on duty; any person engaged in the operation of equipment for the use of maintenance or repair of any highway; and any person engaged in the operation of refuse collection equipment. It is obvious that this law is used to help drivers hear and be aware of their driving environment. Drivers who cannot hear a car horn or an emergency vehicle may not take the necessary precautions and yield to another operator as the case may be. A violation of this section is considered a minor misdemeanor; however, this charge can be elevated to a fourth degree misdemeanor if the offender was previously convicted of a qualified motor vehicle offense within one year, or it can be elevated to a misdemeanor of the third degree if the offender was previously convicted of two or more qualified motor vehicle offenses within a one year period of time. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.

Hugh C. Daily
June 20, 1923 - June 5, 2011 Hugh C. Daily, 87, of Huron, died peacefully on Sunday afternoon, June 5, 2011, in Stein Hospice Care Center. He was born June 20, 1923, in New Castle, Pa., and moved to Sandusky in his late teens. He returned to this area in 1975 after spending many years in New York City and Germany. Hugh made strong ties to his IBEW BN brothers in his 55 years as an electrician and union member. He even continued to attend meetings long after his retirement. Hugh’s annual attendance at the Old Timers Reunion in Sandusky was also a much awaited highlight of his summers. Always curious, he loved to explore new and different surroundings and his early wanderlust continued even into his early 80s, traveling from Ghana to China, Bali to Tenerife. But he always found his way back to Lake Erie where, as all who knew him could attest, he thoroughly appreciated a well-made martini, up, with an olive. He enjoyed debating politics and religion, and remained forever mystified at the religious paintings which depicted Adam and Eve with belly buttons. He is survived by his wife Adele and two children, Nora and Tom.

It blooms there in late winter to early spring, but when brought north, it will bloom all summer. Firespike is considered a tropical plant, which does well in sun to partial shade. The plant attracts bees, butterflies and birds, and only needs normal watering, with a warning not to over water. Propagation can be done by seed, or by new wood cut-
