Huron River Fest Queen and Court Announced

Huron Public Library needs to hear from you Since 1988, the Huron Public Library has used the process of long range planning to ensure that our programs and services are meeting current community needs while anticipating and planning for changes in the complex environment in which the library is situated. Interrelated changes in culture, economy, technology and society have prompted the Library Governing Board of Trustees, administration and staff to turn again to the community to listen to its ever-changing needs, hopes and aspirations for Library programs and services. We need your help. During the month of July, Huronites will have the opportunity to participate in our strategic planning process in two key ways; by completing a community survey and/or by attending a short community meeting focused on a specific interest or community need. You will receive your survey by postal mail very soon. However, you’re also welcome to complete the online survey now by visiting our strategic planning page, where you’re also welcome to register for a community meeting. For more information on getting involved in the process please call Daniel at 419-433-5009, or visit us on the web at http:// huronlibrary.org/strategicplanning.html . We look forward to hearing from you soon. Carol's

The Huron River Fest Committee is pleased to introduce the 20th Anniversary Huron River Fest Queen and her Court. On Saturday afternoon at the Huron Boat Basin Amphitheater the Queen’s Contestants joined Mr. Mac Lehrer and several of the River Fest committee members in the final leg of the competition. Judges from outside of the community judged the four contestants as they answered two rounds of thoughtprovoking questions. Other areas the contestants were judged included: community involvement, school activities, being a positive role model, ability to serve in a Queen’s capacity, poise & personality, ability to communicate and responses to questions asked. And the envelope please………The 20th Anniversary Huron River Fest Queen is…..Miss Emily Wiseman. 1st Attendant is Miss Leah Phipps, 2nd Attendant is Miss Emily King, and 3rd Attendant is Lynsie Schwerer. All four participants did an outstanding job in the competition. Royalty from around the area watched eagerly for River Fest Queen to be crowned and to take the $500 scholarship from the Huron River Fest.

Wiseman was sponsored by Pied Piper and Lighthouse Realty. Phipps was sponsored by Forthofer Training Services and Hallmark Dry Cleaning. King was sponsored by Locksmith’s Hair Studio and The Sand Bar. Schwerer was sponsored by Protech Roofing and Schwerer Construction. Mac Lehrer of the Lion’s Club assumed the role of host for the event. He very genuinely introduced each contestant and then asked the questions provided by the judges to the participants. Prior to the contest the Queen’s contestants rode together in the Lion’s Club River Fest Parade. South Shore Marine graciously escorted the young ladies in a boat pulled by a truck and trailer through the parade route. Barnes Nursery donated all of the flowers for Saturday’s crowing. Without all of these wonderful donations this event L-R: 3rd Attendant Lynsie Schwerer, 2nd Attendant would not have been possible. The Huron River Fest Committee Emily Lynne King, Queen Emily Wiseman and 1st Atwishes to extend their appreciation and tendant Leah Phipps. gratitude to Mac Lehrer, South Shore Marine and Barnes Nursery for their contributions and donations as well as to all of the sponsors for this year’s event.

Mrs. Anne Hinton, formerly from the Huron Public Library, was the Grand Marshal for this year’s Huron River Fest Lion’s Club Parade. In celebration of Hinton’s retirement she graciously accepted the Grand Marshal role. Sunny skies and warm temperatures packed the midway and amphitheater as classmates reunited and long time friends found each other. Every vendor had something special on their menu as the bands entertained the crowds with the beautiful backdrop of the Huron Boat Basin.

Mark your calendars for: 21st Annual Huron River Fest July 13, 14 & 15, 2012 Visit www.huronriverfest.com regularly for updates and details on next year’s fireworks schedule and sponsorship opportunities. The Huron River Fest Committee would like to provide the community with two nights of fireworks. This will only be possible with adequate sponsorship and community participation. Please continue to check the website as ideas are generated they will be posted. Thank you to the many businesses and individuals who sponsored this year’s event!

Recreational Boating “Reckless or Unsafe Operation”

Our community is very fortunate to be adjacent to a natural resource like Lake Erie. Recreational boating is an important part of our community. The State of Ohio has implemented laws that try to insure the safety of the public on its waterways. One such law is found at Ohio Revised Code Section 1547.07 and is titled “Reckless or Unsafe Operation.” This section is divided into two sub-sections. The first sub-section outlines reckless operation. It states: Any person who operates any vessel or manipulates any water skis, aquaplane, or similar device… carelessly or heedlessly, or in disregard of the rights or safety of any person, vessel, or property, or without due caution, at a rate of speed or in a manner so as to endanger any person, vessel, or property is guilty of reckless operation … The second sub-section covers unsafe vessel operation. It states in part: No person shall operate or permit the operation of a vessel in an unsafe manner. A vessel shall be operated in a reasonable and prudent manner at all times. This sub-section also gives examples of what is considered unsafe vessel operation, which includes but is not limited to the following:

A vessel becoming airborne while crossing the wake of another vessel at a distance of less than one hundred (100) feet or at an unsafe distance from the vessel creating the wake; Operating at such a speed or proximity to another vessel or to a person attempting to ride on one or more water skis, surf board, inflatable device, or similar device being towed by a vessel so that as to require the operator of either vessel to swerve or turn abruptly to avoid collision; Operating less than two hundred (200) feet directly behind a person water skiing or attempting to water ski; Weaving through congested traffic. The term “vessel” as used in this section has a very broad definition. It is defined as including every description of craft, including non-displacement craft and seaplanes, designed to be used as a means of transportation on water. Anyone in violation of this section without causing injury or damage to persons or property is guilty of a misdemeanor of the fourth degree. If a violation occurs causing injury to a person or damage to property, the offender is guilty of a misdemeanor of the third degree. Revised Code Section 1547.07 was enacted to keep our waterways safe. There are several laws in Title 15 of the Ohio Revised Code regarding operation of vessels on our waterways. If you would like learn more, please review Title 15 of the Ohio Revised Code. Also, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has a website www.ohiodnr.com that is a good resource for learning more about these laws and other boating information.

The Huron Playhouse continues to entertain its audiences by offering Don’t Dress for Dinner, a fun-filled adventure of mistaken identities, hilarious confusion, rapid improvisation and delightful mayhem! The production will perform July 19 through July 23 at The Huron Playhouse, in the McCormick Middle School, on Ohio Street, in Huron. Don’t Dress for Dinner, written by Marc Camoletti, English adaptation by Robin Hawdon, was a smash hit in Paris and in London and has proven to be equally as successful in America. A London Times critic called it, “…a true piece of theatrical invention! A continually hilarious evening in the theatre.” This delightful small cast features three women and three men who will keep the audience laughing. Jarod Mariani (Sandusky, OH) plays the role of Bernard, a handsome, flirtatious, married businessman; Brittany Kvitko (Philadelphia, PA) performs the role of Jacqueline, the lovely, assertive, and romantic wife of Bernard; Thomas Daniels (Falls Church, VA) plays the role of Robert, Bernard’s best friend and Jacqueline’s handsome lover; Alexandria Spieth (Nashville, TN) performs the role of Suzanne, Bernard’s mistress, a stylish, chic fasion model; Rachel Hull (Goodrich, MI) performs the role of Suzette, the friendly working-class cook; and Daniel Floren (Eau Claire, WI) plays the role of George, the tall, muscular, and over-protective husband of Suzette. Playhouse veteran Dennis C. Seyer (Cape Girardeau, MO) will direct this comic romp and design the restored country house some distance from London. Mollie Hamilton (Columbus, OH) is the technical director, Maxwell Schnur (Joplin, MO) the lighting designer, Andrew Stroud (Kettering, OH) the sound designer, and costumes are by Costume Creation Rentals (Sandusky, OH). Please plan on making your summer memorable by returning for the final show of our 63rd season: THE KING AND I, Music by Richard Rodgers , Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Based on the novel: “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon, (July 26 – July 30, at 8 pm)

Other types of items Roadshow specialists hope to see include vintage guitars. Ryan Krushas, one of the Roadshow’s instrument specialists, spoke about some of the top guitars getting great offers. “Old Gibsons and Fenders are in big demand right now,” said Krushas, “vintage amps too. We also buy violins, mandolins, woodwinds – if it plays it pays!” Timepiece specialist Jeff Ford adds, “Watches are hot! We recently paid over $2,500 for an old Hamilton pocket watch. And we are buying all types of high-end wrist watches too. Brands like Rolex, Tiffany and Chopard are very desirable to collectors. And the finest Swiss timepiece in the world, Patek Philippe, just earned a happy seller $42,000.” When specialist Tom Fuller was asked what he enjoyed most about working at the Roadshow, he was quick to answer, “Old coins and paAbove—Roadshow specialist, Tony Enright, talks with a per currency — for as long family about the gold jewelr y that they brought in. as I can remember, I have been fascinated with collectto the shows, and for good reason.
