Local Landmark, Family Featured on MTV The Benson Ford Shiphouse, an iconic and awe-inspiring image on Put-in-Bay, will be featured next week on MTV’s new spin-off program “Extreme Cribs.” The newest edition to the “MTV Cribs” franchise, “Extreme Cribs” is a 16-episode series which will showcase homes with peculiar features and design quirks that are unique, unusual, alternative and extreme. From scaling living spaces suspended in tree tops to crawling through cozy caverns built inside caves, viewers will be whisked away to the doorsteps of some the most distinctive dwellings across the globe and meet the families that call these places home. The August 12 episode of the program will include a segment on Put-in-Bay’s Benson Ford Shiphouse which is owned by Bryan and Emily Kasper of Sandusky, Ohio. The luxurious Shiphouse is the retrofitted front end of the Ford Motor Company’s former Benson Ford (I), a freighter which transported iron ore and related materials across the Great Lakes from 1924 through 1981. After the freighter was decommissioned, the four-story, forecastle was removed and placed on the island as a summer cottage. The home would include the walnut paneled state rooms, dining room, galley, and pas-

senger lounge designed by Henry Ford for his own pleasure while traversing the Great Lakes on business. Towering over the rocky cliffs of the island and jutting out into Lake Erie, the Benson Ford Shiphouse has been featured on Home & Garden TV’s Extreme Homes, the Travel Channel, The British Daily Mirror, Ohio Magazine, the National Enquirer, and countless area publications. “When I purchased the home in 1999, I never thought it would become a media and television darling,” quipped Bryan Kasper, coowner of Kasper Auto Group. “It’s an amazing place and has really taken on a life of its own.” With recent renovations to the first floor, the structure includes a garage and 1,200 square foot barroom (complete with pool table, slot machine, arcade games, and wide-screen TV), six bedrooms, five full baths, a dining room, living room, galley, and, of course, the pilot house which offers spectacular views of the setting sun off the western shores of Put-inBay. “I was surprised when MTV contacted me,” said Bryan Kasper, “I’m excited to be part of a well-known program with national and mainstream exposure.” Bryan Kasper said the host and tour guide

The program will include the following: How the docks originated, and the role of the Wheeling & Lake Erie RR The evolution of the machinery used for loading and unloading ore, coal & grain The history of the vessels that sailed the Great Lakes The history of a few of the boats that visited the Huron Docks How the docks affected the residents and the economy of Huron Interviews with Eric Hirsimaki, a Great Lakes Ship historian, Larry Macioce, the son of an Italian immigrant who worked on the docks, and Wilbur Ramsey and Leonard “Bus” Chicotel, former dock workers The historical review of Huron’s legacy as an important part of the nation’s shipping industry is quite appropriate as we watch the scene at the Huron River change before our eyes this year. Anyone wishing to have a copy of the DVD “Legacy of the Huron Docks” may do so by calling 419-4335009, ext. 243, to place an order, or by sending a check or money order to the Huron Historical Society, PO Box 222, Huron OH, 44839. Copies are also available at the Huron Chamber of Commerce office. The price for members of the society is a $20 donation. Copies are available to non-members for a donation of $25. Shipping and handling is free for delivery within Erie County, or $6.95 to be shipped outside of Erie County. The society has created several DVDs and books that describe many aspects of Huron’s history. All are for sale, and will be available for purchase at the presentation on Aug. 25. Huron Rotary Club presents the Huron Rotary Festival this week end at the Huron Boat Basin. In previous articles we talked about the festival itself, bands and the art festival. This article will concentrate on the food aspect plus some other areas. We, the Rotary Club, have for years held a rib cook off with as many as 6 rib vendors to choose from. This year is different. Gone is the rib cook off part of the festival. The reason for this change is both economic and timing. Economically it had become harder to attract the quality rib vendors that we want to have at the event. Then there is the other side. We heard from many of you that the cost of feeding a family was too high. Both of those concerns caused the club to look at what we were providing and make changes to the event. The key word is change. We thought the timing to make the changes was good for right now. So when you walk onto the grounds of the event and look around for the rib vendors, you won’t see the big line up of stands. Now that doesn’t mean we won’t have a rib vendor. Actually, we have a really great rib vendor from Vermilion, Joe’s Pit Barbeque. Joe Szivan has created some of the best bbq you can eat on the North Coast. He will be here with ribs, pulled pork, chicken and the best darned beef brisket you can eat. Check out his sauces too. You won’t be disappointed, I guarantee. Now the Rotary Trailer will be there with their array of foods. Deep fried Corn on the Cob which is Hahn’s corn. Check that one out. Then we add Deep Fried Hot Dogs, Deep Fried Bratwurst,

and of course French Fries. So you said that there seems to be a pattern here. Deep fried food. You’re right. Check them out. We promise you will enjoy. Oh did I forget the Domino’s Pizza by the slice. What would a festival be without some libations, the Bud man cometh. Just be careful. We also have Kettle Corn by Sarah Drake. The Huron Rotary Club wants to provide you with a great affordable experience for the week end at the Huron Boat Basin. Again this year there is no admission fee to get in. We do ask that you consider a donation to our Scholarship Fund. So come on down to the Huron Rotary Festival on Friday, from 5pm to 10pm, Saturday, from 11am to 10pm, and Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Gardening With Mary Soil Testing Mary Strayer, Master Gardener Many questions have come into me about soil testing, and I have given the answer that your soil can be tested at the county extension office, or they can tell you where to take or send it. The response has been, “But I can’t afford a soil test, what can I do?” Over the years, people have been doing their own soil testing at home. If you need to know the pH of your soil, to know more about additives you can try this. Nature may give you clues to the acidity or alkalinity of your soil. Check the weeds that sprout up in your gardens. If you find many of one type of weed or wild plants listed below, or a mix of several species from the same list, you will have a good indication of soil pH. Plants that indicate acid or low pH are: star grass, wood anemones, rhododendrons, blackberries or blueberries, or May flowers. Plants that indicate alkaline or high pH soil are: Lady fern, and most other ferns, Jack-in-the-pulpit, bloodroot, wild geranium, poison ivy, nightshade, sweet cicely, bedstraw and goldenrod. For my own experience, I tested this theory and my soil is low pH for the area that was sampled. I had it tested and the home test was correct. It’s always better to have your soil tested, especially if you are planning a new garden. Some gardens in our area are a real mix of soil types, because the soil could have been farm land before it was developed for housing, or it could have been blow sand, which is nutritionally poor, and doesn’t produce well. When you get your soil test back, the info you need will be included to amend your garden spot. Once you figure this out, go to your local garden center, and purchase the correct additive. Then you can expect your new garden to come out healthy and thriving.

Happy Gardening

EHOVE Medical Assisting students ready for what’s next EHOVE Career Center is proud to announce the graduation of 21 students in the EHOVE Medical Assistant program. Medical Assisting is one of the nation’s fastest growing careers, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increased demand for medical assistants is attributed to a predicted increase in the number of physicians’ offices and outpatient care facilities, and the growing number of elderly Americans who need medical treatment. Medical Assistants are multi-skilled personnel that can perform administrative and clinical procedures. Physicians value the unique versatility more and more, as managed care compels them to contain costs and manage human resources efficiently. The EHOVE Medical Assistant students worked very diligently in this program to complete their 900 hours required. The last 200 hours of their practicum experience were attended in surrounding physician offices to include Norwalk, Bellevue, Clyde, Lorain, Sandusky, Oberlin, Berlin Heights, Huron, and Vermilion. “We

cannot thank the healthcare community enough,” said EHOVE Medical Office Programs Coordinator Tonya Lloyd. “Their support is instrumental in continuing the student’s education with hands experience outside of the classroom.” The graduates will be looking forward to taking their rigorous Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Exam from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) organization. 2011 Graduates: Krista Abner—Norwalk, Kristen Abney—Port Clinton, Kelley Akers—Norwalk, Kathleen Burr—Bellevue, Becki Daniel—Attica, Patricia Gates—Norwalk, Emily Gearhart — Willard, Jaime Gilbert—Norwalk, Sara Haslage—Norwalk, Deidre Heidl—Huron, Linda Jackson— Norwalk, Tracie Kidwell—Sandusky, Anita Lester—Fremont, Ruth Morrow —Norwalk, Merlinyanina Parker—Monroeville, Alesia Rieger—Wakeman, Rebecca Rodriguez—Lorain, Whitney Smith—Monroeville, Kris Thompson—Castalia, Susan Woodruff—Clyde.

Fellow author Robert Smith has described A Poetic Journey: “With an artist’s eye and a poet’s ear, Robert Reynolds invites the reader into a world of loving and living. His verse harkens to a time when form embraced the images and reflections of the mind. His illustrations provide both sight and insight. Together, they strike a sure path toward wisdom.” The author will be doing a series of talks and readings from his book including: August 14 at 2 pm at The Coffeehouse Reading Series (Mr. Smith’s Coffeehouse, 140 Columbus Ave. Sandusky, OH); August 28 at 3 pm at The United Presbyterian Church in of Huron. Book of Poetry and Art Published by Huron Author Bird Dog Publishing has announced the release of A Poetic Journey: Poems an 86 page collection of the Robert A. Reynolds’ poetry with his paintings and photographs. The author was born in Lakewood, Ohio in 1933. At 18 he joined the Merchant Marine, where he developed an interest in nautical painting and poetry. In 1955 he met and married Shirley (Minier) of Huron, Ohio, where the couple settled and where they raised their three children.
