nal pieces were inspired by something in her life or were commissioned works. For example, Brouwer wrote the piece, Somewhere the bells..., after hearing a chorus of church bells ringing while standing on the shore of a lake in Austria. Brouwer’s piece, Lonely Lake, was commissioned by a family who live along the shore of a lake in Canada. The piece began softly with the sounds of bird calls and swim strokes and built to a flurry of louder, more flowing music. Other pieces have been commissioned by major orchestras. Margaret Brouwer’s music has been performed in such prestigious places as Carnegie Hall in New York, Severance Hall in Cleveland, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. She has received many awards including the Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Music and the Guggenheim Award. Blue Streak, under the direction of Ms. Brouwer, will end its summer concert series in Medina, OH.

United States Supreme Court Makes Interesting Ruling
Schenk’s Produce
Sweet Corn, Vegetables
By Judge William Steuk, Huron Municipal Court Several months ago I wrote an article about a case before the United States Supreme Court called Schwarzenegger vs. Entertainment Merchants. This case involved the State of California enacting a law in 2005 which prohibited the sale or rental of violent video games to minors. Entertainment Merchants challenged this law arguing that it was unconstitutional and that it violated the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. This case started in the Northern District of California and the Judge ruled that it was unconstitutional. The case was then appealed to the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals which upheld (or agreed with) the District Court’s ruling. Then the State of California appealed the case to the United States Supreme Court. This case was recently in the news because the United States Supreme Court recently announced their decision on this case. In a seven (7) to two (2) majority decision, the Supreme Court affirmed (or agreed with) the lower Court that the California law was unconstitutional. Justice Antonin Scalia wrote the majority opinion where Justice Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan joined in that opinion. Justice

Samuel Alito filed a concurring opinion agreeing with the judgment of the majority. Chief Justice, John Roberts joined in Justice Alito’s concurring opinion. Two (2) Justices of the Supreme Court filed dissenting opinions in this case. These justices are Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Stephen Breyer. These Justices disagreed with the other Justices and feel that the California law is constitutional. A concurring opinion, written in this case by Justice Alito, is used when there may be some agreement in the decision but the Justice may have some differences in the reasoning behind the judgment. In the concurring opinion in this case, Justice Alito suggests that the California law could be constitutional if it were less vague. It will be interesting to see if California tries again to prohibit the sale or rental of these video games with a different version of the law that might be upheld by the Courts. Other states might try to do the same. If you are interested in this case and learning more about the First Amendment of the Constitution, please review this case at the Supreme Court’s website at www.supremecourt.gov. This case was renamed to Brown vs. Entertainment Merchants because Governor Brown replaced Governor Schwarzenegger. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.
Calling Area Crafters The 3rd annual FishHuron Fall Walleye Challenge draws some 350 avid anglers from around the Midwest each October. The Chamber is teaming up with the FishHuron group this year, sponsoring a shopping event on Oct. 8, sure to draw the “fishing widows” here to Huron for the 1st annual Huron River Craft Fest. We hope that lots of Huron folks turn out as well. The craft show is being hosted by the Chamber to allow leading area artisans to display and sell their wares. Cider and doughnuts, along with fish sandwiches and other gourmet goodies, will also be available.
The Walleye Challenge is an exciting event, especially as the official weigh-in begins in midafternoon. Each fish seems to be just a few ounces bigger than the last. These monster walleyes can weigh more than 13 pounds. Any local crafters who would like to sell their wares on the bluff above the boat basin amphitheatre on Oct. 8, can contact the Chamber office for more information, 419-433-5700. Show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A registration form can be found at the Chamber website, www.huron.net, on the home page, under the category of Chamber Events.

First ever Classic Car Auction at Sandusky State Theatre caps off the event this year. Sandusky, OH – August 17, 2011: Collector cars of all types will roll into Sandusky on Friday, September 9-10 for the 20th Anniversary of the Cruisin’ by the Bay Car Show. Close to 500 cars from classic antiques to hot rods will line the streets of downtown Sandusky on Friday and Saturday. Judges on Saturday will hand out over 25 awards in 20 classes of vehicles. Last year’s Cruisin’ by the Bay was named the Best Downtown Car Show by Cruisin’ Times Magazine. New this year is the addition of the Classic Car Auction Saturday evening at the Sandusky State Theatre. Cars over 25 years old are now being accepted for the auction benefiting North Coast Cancer Foundation. “It’s a great way for classic car owners to turn their classics into cash with a portion of the proceeds benefiting a great organization.” says Chris Montgomery, Co-chairman of Cruisin’ by the Bay. Also new this year is the swap meet to be held in the parking garage off Market Street. Montgomery adds, “The Cruisin’ by the Bay committee would like to thank the city of Sandusky, Erie County Commissioners, and Cedar Point for their continued support of North Coast Cancer Foundations’ Cruisin’ by the Bay. All have been wonderful to work with in helping the Foundation’s commitment to serving area cancer patients.” This will be a fun-filled family event for both car aficionados and spectators alike. Not only are there so many outstanding vehicles to see, but there will also be great food and fun, plus a large variety of vendors. Cruisin’ by the Bay is free and open to the public both Friday and Saturday. Pre-registration discounts for the car show participants ends soon. Goodyear Blimp rides benefit the Red Cross By Dottie King On August 17, area residents were surprised to see a special visitor to the sky over Huron. It was the majestic, maize and blue blimp, the Spirit of Goodyear. Kids from five to fifty and well beyond were fascinated as the graceful giant floated 1,000 feet over Lake Erie. Many Huronites rushed to their cars and drove to Griffing-Sandusy Airport for a closer glimpse of Goodyear’s corporate marketing tool. Among them were Gary Magi and his five year old grandson Landon Palmer. “Leland loves planes and race cars, but seeing the blimp was a real thrill for him, Magi said. “He was impressed with how big the blimp is yet how slowly it moves compared to the airplanes that were taking off and landing at the airport.” Judy Kinzel, wife of Cedar Fair Management Corporation CEO, Richard Kinzel, explained that the Goodyear Blimp was in
town as part of Cedar Point’s “Wheels of Thunder”. “To benefit the Firelands Chapter of the American Red Cross, Cedar Point auctioned off five seats for rides on the blimp.” said Kenzel, a Red Cross volunteer. Ron Rude, Executive Director of the Firelands Red Cross added, “The Red Cross received $6,100 profit from the auction and the money will help people in the Erie county area.” The three Goodyear blimps in the United States log over 6,000 hours of flight time annually. Spirit of Goodyear is based in Akron, Ohio, the Stars and Stripes is in Pompano Beach, FL and the Spirit of Innovation is on the west coast in Carson California. Each airship measures 192 feet long and weighs 12,840 pounds. Each blimp has a crew of four pilots and fifteen ground crew members and a public relations manager. Parkvue Fishing Derby The Fish were biting at Parkvue! Parkvue Place residents enjoyed a beautiful morning of fishing that lead into a wonderful noon Fish Fry! Several residents came out, fishing poles in hand for a fun filled morning of Fishing and Prizes! The fishing derby was scheduled from 8am-10am, but there was so much interest, and so many wonderful people participated that it carried over for another hour. There were prizes for four categories: The largest fish caught was 16 inches and was caught by Harold Claxton, The smallest was 9 ¼ inches, caught by Mickey Kosanovich, the most interesting catch went to Paul Koch who caught a huge turtle, and the first fish of the morning was caught by Virginia Duff. The Pond at Parkvue was surrounded by expert fishermen and women and also a few first-timers. No matter the level of expertise, all had one thing in common; they all had a good laugh and a good time. The fish were all caught and released, but the derby was followed by a wonderful fish fry for the residents to enjoy where they received the awards for the categories mentioned above. “It’s so amazing to be able to offer such exciting events for the residents of Parkvue. The events seem to continue to grow and expand each year with the number of participants and the level of excitement,” Tracy Clark, Resident Services Coordinator. Thank you to all who participated and all of the staff who helped make this event such an exciting adventure!
