Fish Huron Ohio and South Shore Marine/Pursuit Boats Join Together The Fish Huron Ohio committee is proud to announce that South Shore Marine and Pursuit Boats are this years title sponsors for the 3rd Annual Fall Walleye Challenge to held on October 8th. Because of past successes, the field has been expanded from 60 to 80 teams, with registration opening September 1st at 10 a.m., on the Fish Huron Ohio website. Venues will include the Huron Yacht Club, Friday night for the Captain’s Party and i’5’s for the award ceremony after the weigh-in. The total prize money for this year’s tournament is over $16,000.00.
Huron is fortunate to be strategically located in a very fertile part of Lake Erie, making this fall tournament an attractive location for the 350 or more anglers expected to participate. In the fall exceptionally large individual fish can be common, with total bag weights being as competitive as any location in the world. The weigh in starts at 3:15 p.m. on the outer wall below the Boat Basin building, and offers a firsthand opportunity to witness the size of the fish. . For those early risers who would like to witness the launch be at the Boat Basin at 8 a.m. and you will be treated to a spectacular site of all the boats taking off. An added benefit of the tournament is that the fishermen donate many of the fish back to Fish Huron, which has the fish cleaned and then gives them to the Huron Food Pantry. Last year’s fall tournament gave over 150 pounds of fillets to the Huron Food Pantry. As the popularity of the fishing tournament has grown, this year’s event will have the 1st Annual Huron River Craft Fest. The Craft Fest is being hosted by the Huron Chamber of Commerce and will allow leading area artisans
to display and sell their wares. The goal of the Craft Fest is not only to give the family and friends of the anglers something to do locally, but also to encourage Huronites to come down to the boat basin and feel the excitement of the tournament. Fish Huron Ohio promotes and markets fishing out of Huron to the general pulbic. It does this mainly thru the internet and its website, www.fishhuronohio.com. It supports local youth thru a scholarship program it started last year.

Ten Locals Poets Share Their Prose at Poetry Reading By Lisa Yako The First Presbyterian Church was the site of the second poetry reading in an ongoing series organized Huron Poet Laureate, Ron Ruble. This past Sunday, approximately 50 people gathered to hear original works by ten local poets, including Rob Smith, Eileen Wikel, Jerry Bauer, Gwen
Aber, Brad Blackwell, Casey Wittmer, Bob Reynolds, John Blakeman, Jim Brenner, and Ron Ruble. The theme which tied all of the poems together was ‘The Great Outdoors’. Many of the poets wrote about the amazing beauty of what they had seen and experienced in Huron and around the world. Topics ranged from breathtaking scenes along Bogart Road to sailing at night on the Chesapeake Bay and being bewildered by the sight of bioluminescent algae. Ron Ruble closed the event with a theatrical interpretation of his story about his childhood memories and experiHuron Hometown News® SM TM 1992 P.O. Box 330 • Huron, Ohio 44839 ences on Shady Lane. It’s not just food Obviously, we all need and love food. For some, learning everything about it is their passion. EHOVE Adult Education students in the Culinary Arts and Dietary Manager programs are just those people. On August 4, students from both of these programs successfully graduated and are moving toward a new career in the field they love. Culinary students learn the fundamentals of cooking, baking, nutrition, kitchen management, menu planning and more through the year-long program with classroom instruction, hands-on training and an internship at a local business. They also complete ServSafe Food Safety and ServSafe Alcohol certifications and the National Restaurant Association’s ManageFirst coursework. “This class in particular took advantage of following their individual goals and have diversified within the culinary field. Some are working for area businesses while others have already had opportunities in management and look forward to starting their own businesses,” said EHOVE Adult Culinary Coordinator Beth Ringlein. Pat Bader – Norwalk
Angel Francis – Port Clinton Lonnie Malson - Huron Leslie Campbell – Norwalk Don Smith – Castalia Darnell Nelson – Norwalk LeVon Edgeston – Norwalk Most people think primarily of chefs and bakers when they think of the food industry. Dietary Managers are also a key part of healthy eating for hospitals, schools, nursing homes and vital places like these that affect many of our loved ones. EHOVE’s students studied food safety, nutrition, basic culinary methods and foodservice and HR management through classroom instruction, hands-on training and an internship at a local business. They also completed ServSafe and Red Cross CPR and AED training. The graduates will be eligible to sit for the national Dietary Managers Association credentialing exam in October. Leadership is key A group of EHOVE students joined other high school students and advisors from high schools throughout Ohio at Hocking College from July 18-22 for the SkillsUSA Summer Leadership Conference. Students received the necessary training to lead their local chapter of SkillsUSA for the year with activities including a creed challenge, leadership sessions, team building, community service project and competitions. Several EHOVE students earned the Statesman Award, which recognizes team members who have demonstrated leadership skills and mastered certain requirements in leadership training. To earn the award, students participated in team building and competitive events sponsored in part by the Ohio Army National Guard, Hocking College and the U.S. Army. Students also worked on community service projects like landscaping, light construction, cleanups and painting projects sponsored in part by Toolbox for Education grants from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. Huron vs. Clyde At Clyde , the Huron Tigers Boys soccer team won 8 to 1 in their season opener. Three minutes into the game, John Dusza scored on a free kick into the upper right corner of the goal. Ten minutes later, Dusza reappeared on the scoreboard by dribbling by Clyde defenders and placing a shot by the goalie. Three minutes after that, Dusza got his hat trick again by dribbling by the Clyde defense and slotting the ball into the corner. Three minutes later, Sam Danilo scored off of a pass from Nolan Thaxton. With sixteen minutes left in the half, senior Matt Wray scored a header off of a corner kick taken by sophomore Jordan Stemple. With nine minutes left in the half, Dusza got his fourth goal with a shot well beyond the 18 yard line. Freshman, Oshae Vonthron got the last goal of the first half after Matt Wray deflected a ball to him inside the 18 yard box. The score at half was 7-0 with Huron in the lead. Twenty minutes in the second half, Danilo got his second goal off of a through ball from Dusza. Clyde scored after this to make the score 8-1. Clyde received two yellow cards during the course of the game. Taylor Prosser had three saves through out the game for Huron.
