Bicentennial celebration begins By ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Sept. 10, 2011, marks the 198th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie when Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and his sailors defeated the British Navy to secure the Great Lakes region for the U.S. once and for all. This fight, one of the major battles of the War of 1812, is celebrated each year at Put-in-Bay during Historical Weekend. But with the 2013 bicentennial approaching, a much bigger celebration is kicking off. The Perry Group, a registered charity organization dedicating to supporting Perry’s Victory International Peace Memorial, is planning a massive celebration to celebrate the 200 years of peace. “We are engaging the entire region in our efforts to remember this day in history and to salute our freedom and sovereignty,” said Dave Zavagno, a Perry Group board member. “We expect thousands of people to attend — not just from the region but from across America, Canada and overseas.” Zavagno said the group hopes to secure some serious star-power to help promote the event mentioning such names as Tom Hanks and Colin Powell. “It’s going to take two years of hard work to get awareness out there,” he said. The celebration will begin the Friday of Labor Day weekend in 2013 when a group of tall ships will assemble near Monroe, Mich. The Parade of Sail will then continue as far east as Cedar Point before dispersing to cities around the western Basin — including Put-in-Bay, Huron and Port Clinton — to dock for the weekend. Other features organizers hope to feature for the Bicentennial celebration include fireworks, a flyover from the Goodyear Blimp, air show and

concerts by nationally known artists. Another feature will be a reenactment of the historic Battle of Lake Erie. According to Zavagno, 557 sailors have been identified from the original battle and hopes are each will be replaced with current people. The organization will sell these spots for $2,000 to $5,000 as part of fundraising efforts. The bicentennial organization expects to raise $1.5 million for the celebration through corporate and other sponsorships, underwritings and through the registering of 1,000 U.S. pleasure craft and their owners symbolic members of the U.S. fleet. Partipants will be able to register for $50 each and will be given numbered certificates that embody Perry’s line: “Don’t Give Up the Ship.” For information about the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial, contact the Perry Group, 25 Town Hall Plaza, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456, at 419285-2804, or visit www.battleoflakeerie-bicentennial.com.

FROM THE BENCH By Judge William Steuk, Huron Municipal Court

Article IV of the Ohio Constitution establishes the judicial branch of our state government. This article also sets forth the duties and responsibilities of our state court system. One responsibility charges the Ohio Supreme Court with overseeing admission to the practice of law and disciplining those admitted. This includes establishing standards and delineating requirements of practicing law as an attorney as well as regulating and disciplining the practice of law. The Ohio Supreme Court is fulfilling these duties using three offices: (1) the Office of the Disciplinary Council, (2) Board of Commissioners on Grievances & Discipline, and (3) the Clients’ Security Fund. The Office of the Disciplinary Council investigates allegations and initiates complaints concerning ethical misconduct and/or mental illness of judges or attorneys under the Code of Professional Responsibility, the Rules of Professional Conduct,

the Rules of Judicial Conduct , and Rules Governing the Unauthorized Practice of Law. The Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline is charged with administering, interpreting, and enforcing Rule V of the Rules of the Government of the Bar. This 28 member board conducts hearings, preserves the record, and makes findings and recommendations to the Supreme Court in disciplinary cases. The board also serves under the state law as the ethics commission for filing financial disclosure statements required of Ohio judges, judicial candidates, and magistrates. The Clients’ Security Fund was created in 1985. Its purpose is to reimburse losses to legal clients as a result of dishonest conduct on the part of a licensed Ohio attorney. For more information about the Ohio Disciplinary System under the Ohio Supreme Court, visit the Supreme Court website at www.sconet.state.oh.us. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.

Rev. Roger’s Reflections By Rev. Roger As I sit this morning to write, I am still on a “spiritual high” from two weeks in Durban, South Africa at the World Methodist Conference. There are over 100 church denominations that trace their roots back to John and Charles Wesley. Every five years, the branches and leaves of that tree gather for celebration, networking, continuing education, and planning for further growth. As current chairperson of the Conference Commission On Christian Unity and Inter-Religious Concerns (COCUIC), our Bishop John Hopkins selected me as the East Ohio representative. My wife Joan went along but was not required to attend meetings (grrr – not fair!). Both Huron and Vermilion churches contributed financially and prayerfully, for which we’re very grateful. Also our Sunday School and Community Vacation Bible School students donated school supplies of which I jammed a suitcase full and the rest will be given to the Huron City Schools for children in need. Joan and I plan to assemble a program/ worship experience later to which you’ll be invited. The theme was, “Jesus Christ – for the Healing of the Nations”. Just as a teaser, here are some highlights. Feel free to enjoy more articles and photos at the World Methodist Council web site. + The Opening Ceremony was awesome! Each group marched in carrying individual banners which were displayed across the front much like the Olympics. The music featured the Africa University and combined conference choirs, orchestra and band – as a drummer I was in percussion heaven! + The Provincial President greeted us, thanking the churches for being instrumental in eliminating apartheid. Our world-wide peace and justice work makes a difference. + The Methodist Peace Award was given to Rosalind Cowill from Brazil, who put her missionary zeal and medical degree to work reviving a leprosy clinic in Nigeria, serving 600 patients for the past 30 years. Our apportionments and special offering donations save lives. + 101,000 food bags were packed for the “Stop Hunger Now” organization. Unemployment is 30% and HIV/Aids runs rampant.

+ On Sunday morning, all 2,000 of us fanned out to local churches. Joan and I went to Manning Road UMC, which has a traditional worship, a contemporary praise service, and an African language service. I felt right at home in the 100 year old sanctuary, flanked by projection screens and fronted with their praise band. The pastor was also a “Rev. Roger”, and his associate was a female named Laura from Pennsylvania whose mother is a minister, too. She and Joan made a wonderful connection. I’d like for our churches to become prayer partners. + We assembled for a street parade from the Convention Center to City Hall rally, singing and led by the Salvation Army band. Many wore native costumes as we waved and witnessed to residents and shopkeepers along the way. + The Closing Ceremony music inspired us upon our feet most of the time, singing “Marching in the Light of God”. Holy Communion was served by teams representing every continent on earth. When we passed the peace, it literally went around the world, to “Let there be Peace on Earth, and let it Begin with Me”. Tears flowed. + Joan and I added a three-day, two night safari at the end, including a jeep ride, bush walk, and boat trip. As impala, giraffe and zebra curiously inspected our vehicle, we were told that the St. Lucia Estuary saved the White Rhino from extinction, reminding us that the stewardship of God’s creation should be top priority of the Christian. + On our last morning at the hotel dining room, I ordered an omelet for breakfast. As the cook assembled the ingredients, he struck up a conversation. He had looked around the dining room and observed people of every hue and nationality, all of them in their native costumes – talking, laughing, hugging, praying, sitting and eating together, serving the same God in Christ. He said: “The World Methodist Conference will leave behind much more than money. You treated us all as equals. You gave us hope that the past difficulties may be resolved. We saw the heavenly banquet. You have left your Christ’s sprit of love behind – that we’ll remember.” As I reflected upon the theme of “Jesus Christ – for the Healing of the Nations”, I thought of the story of our Lord multiplying the loaves and fishes (Matthew 16:2939 and the other gospels). What a blessing it is to be a part of a world-wide, witnessing church to the spirit of Jesus, who…amid the pressure of projects and people, took the time to have compassion upon them, heal their maladies, and feed the multitudes. Go, and spread the word.

Gardening with Mary Mary Strayer, Master Gardener It’s Planting Tulip Time! How many of us love spring, and all the lovely spring flowers blooming. Now is the time to plan your landscape for next spring. Tulips need well-drained soil with a neutral pH soil. They love sandy loam, with 6 or more hours of sunlight daily. If you have clay soil, break up the area where the bulbs are to be planted at least 1’ deep, and amend the area with humus, compost and sand. When planting remember that tulips do not like to get wet, as this causes rotting. If you are making a new flower bed, and you want to plant other flowers in it later, put a marker where each bulb is planted. I use ice cream sticks and

permanent black markers. These sticks hold over the winter, and they are inexpensive. If you are adding tulips to an already established bed, then be sure to plant by Nov. 15, so you can actually see the other plants, or dried parts of the plants that were blooming a month or so ago. Plant tulips in clumps of at least 3 bulbs, and stagger through the bed. Remember to plant your tulips in the fall when the ground cools down to 55 degrees, which is usually after a hard frost. Use a bulb fertilizer with a composition of 4-10-6 as a top dressing after bulbs are planted. Be careful not to put fertilizer in the planting hole because it can burn the new roots emerging. Wait till the ground has frozen to apply mulch. Mulching actually helps

the ground from heaving during warm-ups in the winter. It also holds the moisture in the soil, keeping the bulbs cold until time to grow. Apply no more than a 2” layer of mulch to the tulips you planted. If you are a floral arranger, do not pick the tulips you want to keep blooming year after year. Tulips will not bloom the next year if the stem is cut off. Also remember that if you do cut the tulips and use them in floral arranging, they will grow taller in the vase. Enjoy your tulips, and happy gardening!

Tigers Beat the Sailors 2-0 in First Home Game At Huron, the Tigers won on two second half goals. The first half was an exciting half, but a scoreless half. At the 50 minute mark, John Dusza put in his fifth goal of the season on a forty yard free kick. The second goal came from Freshman Solomon Dutton at the 79th minute. Michael Zeck set up the Dutton goal with a free kick from just past half. After Zeck crossed the ball in, Dutton one touched it by the Vermilion keep. Taylor Prosser had 7 saves in

goal for the Tigers. “Getting a win against a good program like Vermilion is always a good feeling. I think the team looked good tonight. We were solid on defense and our midfield and forwards kept the majority of the possession of the game. I feel confident in the teams play and was very happy with them today,” Coach Asher, HHS. Vermilion JV beat Huron’s JV 3-1, the Huron lone goal was by Greg Baker in the second half of the game.

Tigers Beat the Pirates 1-0 At Huron, Huron fought to beat the Pirates 1-0. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw. The Tigers had the wind the first half and had more shots on target. During the second half the Pirates gained a good deal of possession at the end of the game with some great strikes at goal. The difference in the game came with a handball in the box that went against the Pirates. The pk was scored by Michael Zeck ten minutes into the second half. “Taylor Prosser made some amazing saves at the end of

the game to keep us in the lead. I am very proud of his play and of Michael Zeck’s play. They were the anchor of our team tonight.” Coach Asher, and added “I am very happy with a win against our rival in the weather conditions we had. Perkins is a good squad and the weather made it hard for us to play our game, but in the end we came out with the win and that is what matters to us.” Taylor Prosser made ten saves for the Tigers.

The Lady Tigers not so secret weapon this season is junior Kat Ferrell. In both of Huron’s first week wins over Clyde (3-1) and SMCC (3-0), she led the team in both offense (17, 16 kills) and defense (15, 10 digs). Shown here #17, the 5’11” co-captain is fearsome on the front line. Another multitasker is Junior Sidney Bragg who has a bright future for the young Tigers. Sidney had 9 kills against Clyde to go with 14 digs. Against SMCC, she contributed 10 more digs for the easy Huron win. Photos by Chris Mischler

Revolution3 Triathlon is Back at Cedar Point Amusement Park Rev3 Triathlon Cedar Point is right around the corner! On September 11, 2011, Rev3 will once again take over Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio for another amazing race weekend! The half and full distance triathlons will take place on Sunday, but the event will last all weekend. The half distance consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run and the full distance is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run. This race features a prize purse of $100,000 and will bring pros from throughout the triathlon world, including Richie Cunningham, Bree Wee, Hillary Biscay, Chris McDonald and many more. Rev3 events attract some of the top triathletes from around the world and also offer age-group athletes the chance to get up close and personal with the pros throughout race weekend. On Saturday afternoon, age groupers and their families will have the chance to attend a meet and greet with the pros. The race begins in Lake Erie, where athletes will take to the water from the beach outside of Hotel Breakers. >From there, athletes take to the bike course, which meanders across the scenic causeway and into the rural country roads of Erie County, crisscrossing through the towns of Berlin Heights and Milan before looping back to Cedar Point. The mostly flat run course winds through downtown Sandusky in two loops before heading back to the finish line. “Cedar Point has proved to be a great location for our events. The surrounding area is beautiful and combined with the theme park atmosphere really make this a unique experience,” said Charlie Patten, President of Rev3 Tri. Cedar Point Amusement Park and Resort is consistently ranked as the top destination for families around the world. Situated on Lake Erie, this 364-acre park is home to more than 75 rides, including 17 roller coasters – more rides and more roller coasters than any other park in the world. Cedar Point has activities for all ages, including a water park, golf courses, a marina and more. Families are also encouraged to join in on the Little Rev adventure race, an adventure race that takes teams of all ages to compete by searching for clues around the park. The family fun doesn’t end with the adventure race though. Rev3 events are focused on including the whole family, offering athlete and family only access to the theme park, great race day viewing and more throughout the weekendRev3 has also partnered with the Ulman Cancer Fund, an organization devoted to helping young people with cancer. The evening will culminate with a finish line party from 8pm to Midnight with great music, free parking, food and beverage concessions, and Cedar Point ticket giveaways to Halloweekends and other great prizes from our sponsors. Sponsors for the race include Lake Erie Shore and Islands, Gatorade, GU Energy Gel, and Tyr to name a few. For a complete list, visit Rev3tri.com. Interested sponsors should contact Charlie@rev3tri.com. Rev3 puts on great events in part thanks to its dedicated volunteers. Rev3 offers discounts on upcoming races and a volunteer hospitality tent. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and have an up close and personal view of the race. Volunteers are included in every step of the race, from athlete check-in to on-course aid stations and right down to the finish line. Clubs and groups are also encouraged to volunteer, and can earn donations for their organization. Interested volunteers may contact lj@rev3tri.com. Rev 3 invites local media to come and enjoy the activities offered during this weekend festival and to view the races. Requests for press passes or interviews, or any other inquiries, should be sent to press@rev3tri.com.
