Cleveland Road West Resurfacing Update While it may not appear so today, the city is closing in on final completion of the 2011 Cleveland Road West resurfacing and cove II bridge replacement project. In working to complete the project the city recognizes the inconvenience the work has caused the community and greatly appreciates your patience with the inconvenience the lengthy road closure has caused. However, the project is on track to reconnect the east and west sides of cove II by the end of this month with the completion of the new bridge which will be accessible to all traffic. The project cost totals $1,285,332.83 to date and includes four (4) change orders. Of this total, almost 80% of the project has been provided through federal and state grant awards. This is a great benefit to the city’s budgetary resources but also comes with certain restrictions. The additional work and grant compliance requirements have impacted the project timeline. The following items have impacted the road: 1. Project could not begin between April 15, 2011 and June 15, 2011 due to environmental habitat disruption of cove II wetlands. 2. February 2011 Water Main break and Repair effort impacted Cleveland Road . The

original project set the western boundary for the project at the intersection of Cleveland Road West and Lake Erie Blvd. The water main maintenance effort required the expansion of this project from Lake Erie Blvd. to the intersection of Rye Beach and Cleveland Road . This change requires approval from state and federal agencies. 3. In anticipation of the road project, the Water Department proactively replaced 92 water valves underneath Cleveland Road as an upgrade to the distribution system. It made no sense to wait until the new road bed was laid to complete this work and it was completed prior to the road work. As expected the valve work impacted the road project and required additional materials. The approval of this change requires approval from state and federal agencies. 4. The original project had a minimum amount of asphalt course, less than state specifications actually call for, and a reliance upon geo-fabric materials to strengthen the minimum amounts of asphalt quantities. The fabric is costly and not a reimbursable grant item. The cost exceeded $200,000.00 and was a 100% local cost. After discussion, the city determined
to eliminate the fabric item and requested an additional quantity of asphalt that would accommodate the state’s specifications. The total cost for the additional material is $114,000.00, 50% of which is reimbursable. This change eliminated over $150,000.00 of local costs and establishes a superior road. The approval of this change requires approval from state and federal agencies. 5. Necessary infrastructure improvement were encountered during the removal of the old bridge; they were undetectable until the work began and added time to the duration of the project. 6. Inclement weather has contributed to the loss of productivity. Overall, these issues have added five to seven days to the project but the bridge is expected to be open for traffic by the end of September. Thank you again for your consideration and patience. FROM THE BENCH
SLOW DOWN IN SCHOOL ZONES By Judge Bill Steuk, Huron Municipal Court As schools are now in session, you will see flashing school zone signs near our area schools. Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.21 (B) requires school zone speed limits to be twenty (20) miles per hour while children are going to or leaving school during the opening or closing hours, during any recess, and wherever twenty (20) mile per hour school zone speed limit signs are erected. It should be noted that the law does not require school zones to be identified by signs equipped
with flashing or other lights, or for schools to give any other special notice of the hours during which the school zone speed limit is in effect. Any way, drivers should be particularly cautious within or near school zones since children are likely to be present. We all need to be cautious drivers and pay particular attention to school zone areas and slow down within school zones. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.
Cub Scout pack 31 will kick off their annual popcorn fundraiser on Saturday, September 24 with a neighborhood Blitz. Cub Scouts will be going to Huron neighborhoods to sell Camp Masters Gourmet Popcorn. This is the major fundraiser for the Cub Scouts that provides monies for camping, pinewood derby, overnight sleep-ins, summer camp, den activities, recognition awards, and many other fun activities. Camp Masters returns 70% of the profit to scouting with 30% to our Cub Scout Pack in Huron and 30% to our area council. There is a wide selection of popcorn available including popping corn, microwave popcorn and tins of caramel and cheese popcorn. New items
this year include an Ohio State University Tin filled with White Cheddar, Yellow Cheddar and Zesty Cheesy Salsa Popcorn and a 20-Pack Microwave Nacho Cheese Popcorn. For those who do not wish to purchase popcorn for themselves, the Cub Scouts are offering a military donation that send popcorn to our troops in the military. The boys will be out in the neighborhoods from 1pm to 3:30pm on Saturday. If you want to purchase some popcorn, please contact any Cub Scout or email pack31popcorn@gmail.com by October 22. You may also stop by The Boat Basin between 2pm and 3pm Saturday the 24th. Please support scouting and invest in our Huron Youth.
2011 Angel Tree We have started on the 2011 Angel Tree Christmas Gift Program for the city of Huron children (44839). The program is open to low income families who can sign-up at the Huron Salvation Army Service Unit office located in Lighthouse AG Church 820 Cleveland Road east Huron (on the east side of the city). The requirements are the children must live full time in the 44839 zip area and the family must meet the income guidelines. The child must be 10 years old or younger. The have another Christmas gift program for the children ages 11 to 18. If the children are outside of the 44839 zip code area, we can direct them to a program to help them with gifts. The Angels are cutout cards that will have the gift information for a specific child. Only the first name of the child is used or if the name is unusual we use a pseudo name to
protect their privacy. The Angels are placed on Christmas trees located in Huron. The Angel Tree locations are banks, churches, restaurants, grocery stores, nursing homes, fitness clubs, and stores of various kinds. We can provide a store or business with a small tree to hold the Angels. We are starting to sign-up kids this week. In 2010 we were able to provide over 120 children with a large bag (per child) of assorted gifts based on their requests. We need host sites to provide all these children with gifts or if you are personally interested in taking an Angel please contact the Huron Salvation Army 419-433-0500. We are trying to help children who of no fault of their own have low income situation. Rev Thomas Holzaepfel

adjusted, if necessary, during the patient’s office visit. Comedians: Eric Johnson & Dwayne Castle The Lady Tigers racked up two more conference victories last week over Margaretta (3-1) and Port Clinton (30). The win over a top three SBC contender Polar Bears in Castalia, sets up a big showdown this week against the Edison Chargers who some say are sporting their strongest team ever. Junior Kat Ferrell led the Tiger attack with 33 kills in the two wins including 21 against Margaretta. She also served up five aces. Senior captain Katlyn Sommer contributed 12 kills and played a role in six blocks. She and Alyssa Franklin, who had 19 digs paced the Huron defense. Senior Samantha Wechter led the team with 37 assists over the course of the two wins.

Huron Stung by Clyde 50-6 There was excitement around town this last week for the big SBC football showdown between pre-season favorites Huron and Clyde. The Tigers came into the game looking strong with a 3-0 record having just blanked St. Paul for the first time in four years. Unfortunately for Huron, they coughed up the ball on their first three possessions of the game. The Fliers capitalized on each and every one. The rout was on. It was a big night for the parents and little girls of Huron mini cheerleader program. Over 100 little Tigers roared the home team on and all in attendance loved it. Despite the final score, it was a beautiful evening in our hometown. Above right: Senior Eric Mentis (10) returns the game’s opening kickoff. Above far right: Sophomore linebacker Gabe Camella (22) tracks down the Clyde running back. Below right: The mini cheerleaders, 100+ strong, cheer on their favorite team! Below far right: Senior lineman Drew Enderle fights off the Clyde blocker. Below: Little Cam Adams wants to be a cheerleader some day!!
Huron 8th Grade Move to 2-0 The Huron 8th Grade Tigers moved to 2-0 on the season Thursday, with a 40-6 victory in Clyde over the Fliers. Leading the way for Huron was Dean Dickirson who ran for 50 yards on only 4 carries and completed 5 passes for another 60 yards through the air. In the second quarter alone, Dickirson ran for three touchdowns. “Dean does a little bit of everything for us,” says coach Adam Steinmetz, “he moves all over the place on offense playing quarterback, running back and wide out. Not to mention, he’s our starting inside linebacker.” Dickirson’s second TD run (1 yard) was set up by a magnificent 40 yard throw and catch to Austin Johnson. On his third TD run, Dickirson was sprung loose by a perfectly delivered downfield block from slot receiver Keegan Lobsinger. Dickirson, however, was not the only show in Clyde. Starting quarterback Kyle Kovach masterfully led the Tigers on TD scoring drives in all three of his drives. Kovach ended the game completing 6 of 8 passes for 129 yards. Kovach scored two touchdowns; completing a long touchdown pass to Devyn Jones and scampering in from seven yards out on an option. Huron’s starting offense only played on three drives but still managed some impressive stats in limited time (The start-
ers only played on three drives). Running backs Grant Farrell and Cody Myers each had another strong game. Farrell carried the ball six times for 56 yards and the game’s first score while Myers chipped in 45 yards on six carries. The Huron QBs found six different receivers with Devyn Jones leading the way grabbing three balls for 83 yards and a TD. Wyatt Myers and Will Springer caught two balls each. Defensively, the Tigers were again led by standout linebacker Nic Smercina who collected six tackles but the real spark came from first year defensive end Kevin Staphanian. Staphanian collected five tackles- three of which were “tackles for a loss,” recovered a Flier fumble, recorded a QB sack and pressured the Clyde QB twice. Head Coach Chris Folger was pleased with the play of his offensive line. “Those O-lineman of ours,” said Folger, “they’re good. They’re real good. We can do so much because of the faith we have in our offensive line and the stats those perimeter players are putting up is a direct reflection of them.” Next Thursday the Tigers (2-0) come home for their first home game with a showdown against the SMCC Panthers (1-1).
H Team “The H-Team is a group of community football supporter volunteers. Every week after practice on the night before a game, the Huron H-Team, feeds the JV and Varsity football teams an hotdog and lemonade dinner. One student who shows leadership on the field as well as in practice is awarded a steak dinner. The Huron H-Team is pleased to announce that the Steak of the Week winner for this week is Billy Porter, who is a senior football player at Huron High school.”
Huron High School Cross Country results from the Galion Cross Country Festival The Huron Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams put in an inspiring effort at the Galion Cross Country Festival this past Saturday. The women’s team is slowing creeping up in competitive ranks, placing 10th out of 24 teams in the Division II Varsity Race this weekend. Leading the Tigers was an incredibly focused Morgan Mize (Sr, 20:26), who earned 18th place in the race, followed by some gutsy performances yielding huge personal best’s! Senior Maureen Giardina clocked a season best (22:02, 61st), along with Madi Mize (Fr., 22:07), Kayla Hamilton (Jr., 22:15), Alison Litz (Fr., 22:43), Chloe Greenawalt (Jr., 22:59), and Katy Evers (So., 24:21). The results of the women’s Division II/III Open Race were just as inspiring as the Varstiy, with huge personal bests from almost every runner. Freshman Sammy Hebert came in 38th (23:00), followed by her teammates Kelsey Koehler (Sr., 23:16), Elsa Bertsch (Fr., 23:33), Brianna Lewis-Griffaw (So., 23:38), Ines Tijera (Sr., 25:09), and Jessica Emery (So., 30:31). These women have turned a corner this week, and now look to be extremely
competitive as the season heats up! It will be a race to see who earns their spot on the Varsity squad! The Men’s team is beginning to capitalize on their training efforts, and put in an impressive performance at Galion, as well. Kevin Tomczyk (So.) led the men, broke the 17- min barrier for the first time (16:54) and placing 23rd in the race. Close behind were Junior Jake Ramey (93rd) who ran his personal best of 18:18, and Sophomore Brennan Cockrell (116th), who tied his personal best race with an 18:50. Not to be overlooked was Freshman Sean Martin (162nd), again beating a personal best from last week clocking a 20:22. The Varsity men were joined by Sophomore Will Koenig (184th, 23:35), Michael Post (Sr.), and Stephen Tomczyk, and placed 22nd as a team. As these young men begin to realize their potential, the sky will be the limit. Catch the Running Tigers if you can this Wednesday at the Erie County Championships at Mills Creek Golf Course in Sandusky. High School Varsity Races at 5 and 5:30. Go Tigers!
Huron Soccer At Port Clinton, the Huron Tigers lost 1-0. The game, was a hard played game by both teams. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw. The Redskins got a tally near the end of the game, to go up 1 to 0, and that is how it ended. Taylor Prosser had 8 saves in goal for the Tigers. “We played well and so did Port Clinton. I thought both teams left it all out on the field and it was a great game to watch. Everyone who played for
us tonight did a great job. I think that both teams deserved to win tonight and no one should be hanging their heads. I have to give Port Clinton credit. They had wonderful touch and played a great possession game. We look forward to improving and playing them on our field in a couple of weeks,” Coach Matt Asher. Huron Tigers 4 and 3, SBC 2 and 2.
