Shawnee Students Share Lunch with Huron Fire Department
Around Town
The Huron Firefighters along with the students of Shawnee Elementary School enjoyed a localized meal on Tuesday during the “Ohio – The Heart of Our Lunch Day”. This was one day during National School Lunch Week that took place from October 10th through 14th. The theme of this year’s national school lunch observation was “School Lunch – Let’s Grow Healthy”. When combined with Fire Prevention Week (October 10th – 15th) Sue Whitaker, Food Service Director for Huron City School decided it made sense to design a meal to meet all the needs of the different observations, therefore serving the “Ohio – The Heart of Our Lunch” meal in the red plastic firefighter’s helmets. This marks the twelfth year Lt. Paul Hasenmeier and his for the elementary students daughter, Kylie, enjoy their “All of Huron to be served their Ohio” lunch together. lunch on this special day

During National School Lunch Week, Huron City Schools joined fourteen other area districts in celebrating their second annual “Ohio – The Heart of Our Lunch Day”. The purpose of the “Ohio – The Heart of Our Lunch Day” is to showcase items that are either grown or processed locally in Ohio “National School Lunch Week is a great time to offer our All Ohio Lunch and celebrate with our Firefighters as well”, stated Sue. “It’s amazing to see all those red hats in our lunchroom. On that day we have our own red hat society!”

necessary to attract future development. “The current economic environment is a serious threat to all local government services. Presenting a strong, financially solvent organization can attract new development partnerships needed to stabilize local revenues without the introduction of new taxation.” Over the past ten years the city has reduced its total workforce, managed to curb the costs of expensive benefits programs and looked regionally to enhance service delivery through local partnerships, he said. “The recent audit report combined with an upgraded bond rating is one component of the superior quality service the city wants to pass on to the community. We set this as a goal a year ago and I am extremely proud of the work the staff has committed to achieve this distinction.”

Around Town Prohibition in Ohio By Lisa Yako of Historical Research Partners Much interest has surrounded the topic of prohibition due to the documentary by Ken Burns that recently aired on PBS. Interestingly, the stirrings for the prohibition movement began in Ohio. The first organized push toward prohibition began with the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) which was organized on December 23, 1873, in Hillsboro, Ohio. Members of the WCTU prayed outside establishments that sold alcohol and often attempted to block the entrances. Members of the WCTU included women from nearly every sector of American life, but the majority of the members came from the middle classes and all had strong ties to evangelical Protestant churches. Though the WCTU is still
in existence today, its members were unable to convince the majority of the American public to embrace prohibition. The next organized movement in favor of prohibition came with the creation of the Anti-Saloon League in 1893. In 1894, Brookfield, Ohio, native and Oberlin College graduate, Wayne Wheeler, was named as leader of the Anti-Saloon League. Wheeler was both passionate about the cause of prohibition and was a well-organized leader. Wheeler’s focus was solely on prohibition, and he effectively applied pressure on politicians to further his cause. Despite Ohio’s strong history in raising prohibition leaders, Ohio did not vote itself dry until 1918. Nonetheless, the sentiment toward going dry in Ohio was always strong, and prohibition was often decided on a local level.

Arthur L. Hoover, son of local inventor, Isaac W. Hoover, and secretary of the Hoover Manufacturing Company of Milan, Ohio, embraced the cause of prohibition. Hoover’s interest in prohibition likely was due to a number of reasons including his job and his faith. Hoover’s livelihood came from the manufacture of potato diggers and other potato-related machinery. Alcohol consumption by employees often led to accidents and decreased productivity. Hoover first became Secretary of the Erie County Vote Ohio Dry Committee and was later named Secretary for the state-wide organization. During his tenure, Hoover discovered a “Blind Tiger” in Huron. (A “blind tiger” was a low-class establishment that illegally sold alcohol. The owner would charge an entrance fee to see an attraction, such as an animal, and then would provide a complimentary drink.) The October 25, 1915 issue of the Sandusky Register reported this incident

as follows: “That a “blind tiger” is openly running in Huron is the charge made by A.L. Hoover, chairman of the county temperance committee. Chairman Hoover said Sunday that he reported the matter to the county liquor license commission and asked that its members investigate. “It is a matter of common knowledge in Huron that the “blind tiger” is in operation. The beer sold is obtained from an Erie county brewery.” asserted Hoover.” Apparently, Huron did not readily embrace prohibition! Prohibition was enacted on a national level on January 17, 1920 after the 18th Amendment to the United States constitution was ratified. After 13 years of increased crime associated with the illegal sale of liquor and no decrease in consumption, the 18th Amendment was repealed, and the freedom to legally choose whether to consume alcohol was again restored to the American people.

September Students of the Month
Face painting is always an exciting time for the students as they patiently watch their classmates while waiting for their turn.
Shawnee Celebrates Harvest Happenings Shawnee Elementary School students welcomed the fall season on Friday, October 7, 2011 with their annual “Harvest Happenings” celebration. The Huron PTO organized the special day of fun for the pre-school through second grade students by providing games and outdoor activities. Popcorn Relays, Corn Hole, a Bounce Castle, an Obstacle Course, the limbo, Face Painting and the big parachute were the hits of the day. For the second year in a row Mother Nature contributed to the day’s event by providing 70 degrees and sunshine. Every year the students look forward to this very special celebration. “A special thank you to the teachers, staff, and Ms. Vonthron for their cooperation and efforts in making this a special day for the students,” stated Heather Hardy, Harvest Happenings Chairperson for the PTO. The students greatly appreciated all of the help and hard work of that from the volunteers and Kindergarten students of Shawnee ElePTO members: Jill Geis, Amanda mentary School demonstrate how limbo Harkelroad, Kristi Sas, Jacquelyn they are during their Harvest Happenings Hauser, Rich Obergefell, Stacey celebration last week. BALDE PROSSER Huron High School staff members used words such as: kind, mature, dedicated, and responsible to describe the September students. Students caught working hard at school and helping to create a more positive environment will increase a student’s chance of being awarded Student of the Month. The staff members at Huron High School will vote for the “Student of the Month” Award once a month. One student from each grade level will be chosen for the title.

Huron defeats Margaretta in SBC Volleyball Play
Tiger Boys lose to Port Clinton and Norwalk At Huron, the Redskins got off to a quick start to beat the Tigers on their senior night. Port Clinton got two goals within the first ten minutes of the match. Huron got their lone goal of the first half with a Solomon Dutton cross which turned into a P.C. own goal. The half ended at 2-1. In the second half the Redskins got going fast again scoring early and then late in the second half. Michael Zeck scored for Huron with 15 minutes left in game. Huron had two opportunities to put the game away, but both went wide of the net. The game ended at a score of 4-2 in favor of the Redskins. Huron goal keeper Taylor Prosser had 6 saves on the night. “I have to give Port Clinton and their coaches a great deal of credit though. They are a great team and out possessed us tonight. That is the first time all season I have really felt that way. This taught us what we need to work

on before the playoffs which is the shining star for us. Our mistakes are easy to correct and we will look to do that in practice" Coach Asher.
•••••• Two early goals by Norwalk (9-0-3) in the first 15 minutes of play, ensured the Truckers to remain unbeaten. Huron (9-5) came back late in the first half, John Dusza scored off a penalty kick after Michael Zeck was fouled in the box. Dusza put his shot to the right side past Norwalk goalie, Evan Bader to bring Huron within a goal. “After their two goal, they didn’t have too many shots on goal at all. Taylor Prosser made about three save” Coach Asher. As this was a very physical game, there were many yellow cards handed out the majority of them going to Norwalk. Huron had more possession in the second half, but Norwalk’s goalie Bader didn’t allow anything into the net during the run of play. John Dusza and Gio James just missed on their chances to tie the game.

The H-Team is a group of community football supporter volunteers. Every week after practice on the night before a game, the Huron H-Team, feeds the JV and Varsity football teams an hotdog and lemonade dinner. One student who shows leadership on the field as well as in practice is awarded a steak dinner. The Huron H-Team is pleased to announce that the Steak of the Week winner for this week is Nathan Schaefer, who is a senior football player at Huron High school. Also receiving a steak this week is Dan Claar, a supporter of the Huron football program. Dan donated all the hot dogs for the entire football season. 8th Grade Tigers Stay Unbeaten, 5-0 The Huron 8th Grade football team stayed undefeated last Thursday with a dominating 34-24 victory over previously unbeaten Oak Harbor. The Tigers got first half touchdown runs from Cody Myers (54yd), Grant Ferrell (20yd) and Kyle Kovach (12yd) and Devyn Jones hauled in a 52 yard touchdown catch to secure a comfortable 28-8 halftime lead. Starting linebackers Nic Smercina (6 tackles), Dean Dickirson (6 tackles), and Grant Ferrell (5 tackles) led the way for the Tiger defense. Tyler Sasala, the starting center who rarely plays defense, came up big from his defensive end spot with 4 tackles. Cornerbacks Sam James and Donovan Corwin aggressively controlled the outside and delivered heavy hits on the Oak Harbor running backs. The running back combination of Grant Ferrell and Cody Myers diced the Rocket defense all afternoon. Ferrell (73yds) and Myers (74yds) combined for nearly 150 yards on the ground. Quarterback Kyle Kovach threw two touchdown passes and was 6 of 11 passing for 89 yards. “Our guys played so hard this week,” said Head Coach Chris Folger, “they were focused, disciplined, but most importantly, they played with heart. I love the way they carried themselves in a big game.” Next week the Tigers (5-0) host the Margaretta Polar Bears (0-5) at 6:00pm, under the lights at Huron Memorial Stadium.

Riverfest Woolybear Since her crowning the Huron River Fest Queen has made her way across the state to various area festivals. Over the past weekend Queen Emily Wiseman, 1st attendant Leah Phipps, and 3rd Attendant Lynsie Schwere attended the 39th Annual Woollybear Festival in Vermilion, Ohio. The Woollybear Festival is the largest 1-day festival in Ohio. While at the Wollybear Festival, the girls represented Huron by attending a Queen’s festival breakfast, the Woollybear queen ceremony, and rode in the Woollybear Parade in a boat provided by South Shore Marine. Vermilion’s Woollybear Parade is one of the largest parades in the state of Ohio, lasting approximately 2 hours.”
