The Community is pleased to announce the long awaited demolition of the former ConAgra site has moved into its final stage. Commencing Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. the massive sevenstory Grain Warehouse and contiguous eleven-story Header House buildings will be brought down simultaneously by controlled implosion.

The implosion will be accompanied by several other events to properly commemorate this historic moment in the Firelands. Burdue & Associates of Sandusky, OH has subcontracted for the implosion work with world renowned explosive expert Advanced Explosives Demolition (AED) of Tensed, ID. Two smaller buildings were successfully demolished mechanically this week in preparation for the main implosion in January. Similarly, all of the concrete silos will be mechanically demolished the week before and week after the implosion.

Once on the ground the remaining materials will be crushed and the city will begin work with the private development market to redevelop the site in an effort to stimulate investment in its downtown core.

Huron City Manager, Andy White, has been working towards this day for over two years. “I am excited with the prospect of finishing the project of cleaning the ConAgra site.” White said. “This is the beginning of a whole new phase in the development of the City of Huron.”

Activities planned for the Sunday event include a fireworks display for the public and a VIP viewing area. There are other activities in the planning stages. Individuals interested in the VIP viewing area should contact the Huron Chamber of Commerce for tickets. Tickets are available for $50.00 and offer the closest perspective to the activity.

The proceeds collected will be donated to two local charities, Huron Parks and Recreation Foundation and the Huron Food Pantry.

The VIP area is being managed by two local agencies, the Huron Chamber of Commerce and Fish Huron Ohio. Access to the Huron River bridge will be prohibited to traffic, including pedestrian and mo-

The fireworks display is slated to take place at 2:15 p.m. prior to the implosion.

Fisher-Titus and Premiere Theater to Offer a Sensory Friendly Trip to the Movies Fisher-Titus Medical Center’s Autism Spectrum Kids program (ASK) has teamed up with Premiere Theater in Norwalk to bring families and children with autism and other disabilities a unique private showing of the movie “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.” The movie will be adapted to be a “sensory friendly” film, and will be shown at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Premiere Theater, 50 Theater Drive, Norwalk. Cost per ticket is $5.50.

Children on the autism spectrum and with other disabilities can be oversensitive to light and sound, making it difficult for them to enjoy a typical movie showing.

“During sensory friendly films the sound is turned down, the lights remain on, and there are no previews or trailers,” said Lindsey Soisson, speech-language pathologist and Fisher-Titus Medical Center’s special program

coordinator. “These modifications create a sensory friendly environment that will decrease the likelihood that the child will become overstimulated.”

In regular movie showings, children are expected to remain seated and stay still and quiet for up to two hours, a task that can be very difficult for children on the autism spectrum.

“At our sensory friendly film, children will be able to talk, sing, dance, walk around, move and take a break as needed,” said Soisson.

Children will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free, or other special snacks if on restricted diets, but the concession stand will also be open. “We realize that children with autism and other disabilities have unique challenges in regards to social and community activities,

and often may not get to join their families and friends at the theater,” Soisson said. “This type of adapted showing gives these children the opportunity to enjoy a movie with their families in a safe and accepting environment.”

Introduced to the community in 2001, ASK is a program of Fisher-Titus Medical Center’s Pediatric Therapy Department designed to help families and children living with autism spectrum disorder. ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY PROGRAM

If any group or organization is interested in volunteering to keep Ohio roads litter free and beautiful, the Ohio Department of Transportation has made it easy to start an Adopt-A-Highway program in your local area. The program works by having groups adopt a two mile stretch of an interchange along a

state route, a U.S. highway, or an interstate. Groups are asked to pick up trash a minimum of four times per year.

The Ohio Department of Transportation will provide safety training, trash bags, disposable safety vests and two signs to be used at the beginning of each two mile section.

The department asks that this be a volunteer program and those who participate should not be paid for their services.

Charles Anderson “Poppy” Stanley April 10, 1928 – December 19,2011 Clarence Anderson “Poppy” Stanley, 83 , of Huron, died Dec. 19,2011, in Stein Hospice.

Clarence was born April 10, 1928, in Omaha – Caney Ridge, VA., son of the late Rufus and Sallie Stanley. Clarence served his country in U.S. Army and was retired form Lorain Ford. He was also an avid follower of Bluegrass music.

Clarence is survived by his children, Clarence Stanley Jr., Jennifer Bowers, Sharon Chicotel and Darryl Stanley; 10 grandchil-

dren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Sallie Stanley; siblings, Lee Webb, Julius, Elzie, Ralph and Emily Hamilton, and three great grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service 6-9 p .m.

Friday, December 30, at the orain County, Coon Hunters, 2400 Sunnyside Road, Vermilion.

Seniors Fisher-Titus Medical Center Offers “50 & Better” Fitness series The Fisher-Titus “50 & Better” Fitness series encompasses a variety of disciplines and exercises customized for participants 50 and over, and is suitable for beginners and advanced students.

Mix It Up is a 60-minute class that is a fun mix of exercises that target range of motion, balance, aerobics, strengthening and stretching. The Beginner Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. The Advanced Class

Parkvue Place Announces Big Winner Parkvue announced resident Genevieve Spaid as the winner of the Christmas Lottery Tree Fundraiser this week. Spaid’s tree – a pre-lit, four-foot, lime green holiday spectacle – was covered in scratch-off lottery tickets valued at more than $265.

Tickets sold out more than a month ago and generated tons of excitement for residents and team members alike at Parkvue, an exceptional provider of homes and health care for older adults in Sandusky.

Residents joined in the fun of selling the tickets and were eager to help raise money for such a good cause. Marian Koch, a current resident at Parkvue Place raised over $600 with help from friends.

Huron Swimmers Split with Port Clinton Huron boys boosted their record to 2-0 last Tuesday, beating Port Clinton 88-73, while the girls stand at 1-1 after a 139-44 loss.

The girls 200 medley relay team of Sammy Hebert, Alli Slocum, Julia Martello and Courtney Hart placed third (2:12.60). Martello also placed second in the 200 IM (2:32.42) and first in the 100 fly (1:08.80), while Hart took a third in the 50 Free (28:99). Slocum won the 100 breast (1:18.98) and took second in the 500 Free (5:58.59). The 200 free relay team of Kayla Hamilton, Martello, Slocum and Hart took second (1:56.70).

and Ryan Brownell (1:57.90) while the team of Jake Ramey, Ikki Tanaka, Jack Ineson and Colin Roth placed second (2:09.05). K. Tomczyk placed second in the 200 free (2:08.42) while Jon Turner took second in the 200IM and second in the 100 fly (1:07.5). S. Tomczyk won the 50 free (24:81), Ineson took third in the 100 fly (1:18.77), Brownell won the 100 free (56.41) and Tyler Savage placed third in the 500 free (7:04.11).

The relay team of K. Tomczyk, Turner, S. Tomczyk and Brownell placed second in the 200 free relay (1:40.84) while the team of Buckingham, Tanaka, Savage and Ineson placed third (1:52.21). The boys swept the 100 back with Ramey winning (1:14.4) followed by Tanaka in second

(1:17.58) and Nick Fisher in third (1:34.02). Buckingham and Ramey placed first and third respectively in the 100 breast (1:11.63, 1:36.64) and the relay team of Turner, S. Tomczyk, K. Tomczyk and Brownell took second in the 400 free relay (3:43.95).

Second year Coach Adam Warner was pleased with both teams’ efforts. The swimmers have made great progress this year, which is reflected in their times and their records. They will start the new year with a busy week, facing Sandusky on January 3rd, Lexington on the 5th and competing in an invitational at Oak Harbor on the 7th.

Schools Woodlands 5th Grade Science Students “Touch” the Moon For most of us, studying space in school meant that we memorized the order of the planets outward from the sun.

What a great experience to chat face to face over the computer with an expert! The students were thrilled and had phenomenal questions ready.

And, this is just the beginning! The second half of the unit will include work with robotic arms from NASA, building recycled robots, using our iPads to build electronic postcards from another planet, and working with the Sally Ride Science foundation and the GRAIL satellite (orbiting the moon) to take images of the moon that we chose. In our science classes, we will be working hard to become scientists of the future that have the necessary problem solving skills to make a difference!
