For Grant Cornell, the grocery business is part of his heritage. The Cornell family has operated grocery stores since 1932. The earliest store was located in Plymouth, Ohio, and a subsequent store was later opened in Shelby, Ohio. After working in the family store for many years, Grant transitioned into a job in the wholesaling business in 1996. Interestingly, the former IGA store in Huron was one of Grant’s clients. Grant was well-acquainted with Huron since the Cornell family had owned a summer home here since around 1960. In 2006, Grant had the opportunity to purchase the Huron IGA, and in December of 2006, Cornell’s Foods officially opened for business. Since opening, Grant has been continuously improving the store and reassessing the products he carries. Grant strives to provide Huron with a clean and organized store. He has updated the store in a variety of ways including new dairy, meat, and frozen food cases and a new kitchen. Also, Grant added a dollar section at the front of the store which contains a myriad of items such as food, cleaning supplies, and drinks. Cornell’s has truly made a name for itself by providing quality products. Grant is especially proud of the store’s meat department which carries high-quality meats, including Gerber chicken, the produce department which is always fresh and wellstocked, and the store’s own roasted coffee beans. Though Cornell’s inherited the large coffee roaster when the store was purchased, Grant enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to promote this branch of the business. Grant decided to name the coffee Northcoast Coffee, and he redesigned the label to include an image of the Huron Lighthouse. The coffee is roasted in the store once per month, and there are about 40 flavors from which to choose. Despite all of the first-rate products the store carries, Grant views his friendly employees as one of his biggest assets. Cornell’s carries a wide variety of locally-produced products, as well as national brands. One of the newest products that the store has added is Hartzler milk which is produced in Wooster, Ohio. Hartzler milk is unique in that their cows, which are not given any artificial hormones, graze on pesticide-free grass. In addition, the milk is not homogenized and undergoes a low-temperature pasteurization process so the beneficial enzymes in the milk stay intact. Interestingly, Hartzler milk is bottled in reusable glass bottles. Other local products include, but are not limited to, honey from Clyde, Ohio, and Orlando breads from Cleveland. Grant has truly tried to capture the essence of Huron and its location on the shores of Lake Erie in the décor of the store. Historic photos of Huron can be seen gracing the walls throughout the store. Make sure to look up to see all of these great photos. In addition, Grant has amassed quite a collection of old water skis and other nautical memorabilia. Though winter business is usually down by 30%, Cornell’s continuously provides Huron with great choices and a locally-owned alternative to the large stores in Sandusky. Keep up the good work!

Around Town BGSU Firelands Hosts College FROM THE BENCH The Ohio Bar Exam Financial Aid Night On Sunday, Feb. 12, beginning at 2 p.m. Bowling Green State University Firelands College will host the local portion of College Goal Sunday, a state-wide event with the goal of helping to prepare students and their families for the financial challenges of college. Held at 50 sites across the state, in 2011 BGSU Firelands attracted one of the largest crowds with 194 guests including nearly 100 college-bound students. The free event, presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents, assists students and parents with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid including the Federal
Pell Grant and student loans as well as the need-based state grants. “College financial aid can be very intimidating to students and parents,” said BGSU Firelands Director of Enrollment Management & Student Retention Services Deb Divers. “College Goal Sunday is an excellent opportunity to talk about financial aid and have trained professional help fill out the FAFSA forms.” Volunteers from BGSU Firelands, neighboring colleges, and other educational institutions, will provide support, guidance, and encouragement as the families navigated the on-line process. The FAFSA is the key to funding a college education and helping families to overcome financial barriers that otherwise prevent students from attending the institution in which they are interested. Studies show that a student is 50 percent more likely to attend college when they complete the FAFSA. Stories will include Oberlin College’s acceptance of African American students, the

EHOVE Auto Body students donate restored bikes EHOVE Auto Body students Tyler Bivens (New London HS), Paige McNutt (New London HS), Dustin Lane (Western Reserve HS) and Brandon Ryerson (South Central HS), and their instructor Jim Linder restored and donated bikes to the Salvation Army for the holiday season. Students applied each step they’ve learned in the Auto Body program like prep work, wrenching, sanding, painting and more to the bikes. Their goal was to make the bikes appear like new before they were donated. “It’s a fantastic chance for our students to use the skills they’ve learned here at EHOVE to help others,” said Linder. Each of the students expressed how much they enjoyed being able to be a part of a child’s shock and joy at seeing the gift of a new bike. “It was the first time I’ve done anything like that, and it was fun to make some kid’s Christmas,” said Tyler Bivens (New London HS). “Not all of us grew up having a bike, and that was a big deal. I’m glad we could do this,” said Paige McNutt (New London HS). EHOVE Career Center is a leading career tech school in Milan Township. This high school and adult education facility draws students from a variety of locales, and serves multiple school districts in Erie, Huron and Ottawa Counties. Students are given the opportunity to take challenging academic classes in a customized and relevant curriculum, and gain hands-on training and real world experience to prepare them for college, a specific career, or the military. Lady Tigers lose to Oak Harbor The Huron girls basketball teams hosted the Oak Harbor Rockets last weekend. The Tiger JV squad kept the pressure on the Rockets forcing numerous turnovers in their 38-30 win. Meanwhile, varsity squad struggled against Oak Harbor, falling by the score of 52-23. Freshman Hannah Cantrill led the home squad with nine points.

Perkins hands Tiger Boys a loss Last Saturday, the Huron Tigers boys team hosted Perkins in what was viewed as the SBC’s last hope to keep the Pirates (10-0 in conference) from this year’s title. Unfortunately, Perkins lived up to their reputation and dominated inside using solid ball movement to get good looks. Then, they converted them. The Tigers struggled to score in the first half and trailed 27-10 at the break. Despite a 26 point outburst in the final quarter, no one from the home team hit double figures. Senior Kyle Pisano led Huron with seven points.
