Bellevue, even in this economic downturn, has continued to invest in its economic future. State Route #18 (Kilbourne Street) was paved and the Norfolk Southern Railroad cooperated by repairing the crossings along State Route #18. The resurfacing of North West Street and all main collector streets have now been resurfaced to the two new schools that are in the process of construction. The people of Bellevue have invested in the future by funding two new school projects. These projects not only will bring new construction jobs to the local economy, but are a major investment in the future our youth. A new middle school is being built at the site the old Shumaker School on State Route # 269 (Castalia Street) and a new grade school is under construction at the corner of State Route #269 (Castalia Street) and Potter Road.

Autoplas, Inc., a division of the Windsor Mold Group, announced that they will be investing several million

dollars in their Bellevue Plant on Goodrich Road. Janotta & Herner, Inc. was awarded the contract for a 30,000 sq ft addition to the plant. “This expansion will protect current jobs and create future employment opportunities within the Bellevue area,” said Jeff Stack, Autoplas Plant Manager and U.S. Operations Manager. The City and the Bellevue Development Corp (B.D.C.) and their Executive Director, Steve Fuhr, worked exceptionally well together in bringing the project to Bellevue. The City would also like to express its thanks to Marc Woodard and Woodard Photographic for working with Autoplas, Inc. to allow the expansion of the facility.

Tell your Media Rep: “Show me the numbers” Guess it’s time for a new picture – my wife told me she was tired of seeing what I looked like in high school. Here’s a more recent one from a class at BGSU Firelands.

By Jeffrey H. Bryden Editor Hey — we’re in a new year; time for a new beginnings. Might I suggest it’s also time to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your advertising dollar?

These last several years have been a “wake-up call” for most Americans as we saw our once-vaunted economy shake, rattle and roll its way down the hill it had so-steadily climbed in recent years. Major economic icons – insurance, financial and industrial giants – bit the dust. Or fell to their knees begging for help.

Our area of North Central Ohio suffered along with the nation. And belts, already tightened, were taken in another notch. Recently markets are up, housing prices are up, certain auto sales are up yet unemployment still hangs like a sword of Damocles over our five counties. Are we still in the recession or headed of it? You’ll

find opinion on both sides of this one.

What about your business? I doubt if you are still operating the way you were a year or two ago? Will you be running it the same a year from now?

I doubt that too.

What can you do to ensure success during these still unpredictable months ahead? Grandpa Bryden used to say “… don’t forget the fundamentals.” At the time, he never missed the opportunity to remind my sister and me to learn our gradeschool basics like math and English.

In business, one of the most fundamental principles is getting what you pay for. These are the days when the pencils need to be sharper than ever before. And one elusive area has been in the promotion of your business or service. You know you need to advertise, and the options are many. But which to choose?

Which will give you the greatest return on your investment?

Every advertising medium or vehicle that calls on you, from print, broadcast, directory and outdoor, will tell you they should be the “number one” publication for your advertising dollar. Can you separate the wheat from their chaff?

John Wanamaker, a departmentstore magnate in the late 19th century, famously quipped that half the money he spent on advertising was wasted, but that he didn’t know

which half. How can you get “both halves” of what you pay for?

A current television campaign reminds used car buyers to say, “show me the CarFax” as a way to cut through the dealer’s sales efforts and get to the heart of the car’s value/ repair history. Similarly, I suggest you ask your media rep to “show me your numbers.”

Broadcast entities have audience numbers and market share information from recent rating sweeps – indeed the rates they charge are predicated on the ebb and flow of viewers and listeners among their colleagues. Compare the audiences and compare the cost per rating point as a matter of cost efficiency.

Print media, like magazines, daily papers and business periodicals are less susceptible to these frequent audience comings and goings. They should subscribe to annual or semiannual audits of their circulation – both in the number of readers and the demographic qualities of those readers. Ask these representatives for their most recent audit statement. See where the copies are distributed – does it match your geographic focus?

Look at the quality of the reader – does their income/education/ occupation look like your ideal customer?

Do they have circulation above and beyond the original copy? (Many magazines and monthly Credit Union is periodicals have “passalong” statistics – showing how many additional readers see (...to at least $500,000 thru NCUA & ESI.) each issue.)

Autoplas, Inc. is a fullservice automotive supplier with injection molding, painting and assembly capabilities. Their signature products include Mustang 5.0 engine covers and ignition covers; Camaro V8 covers; Buick LaCrosse engine covers and sight shields; Ford Escape rear tail lamp lens: high gloss exterior pillar applications, along with cowl vents and air inlet panels.

It is rewarding to see that the City’s investments in the future are paying off. The North Water Tower Project several years ago and the tie into Erie County Water System have not only allowed the City to meet the insurance requirements for water pressure and volume for the plastics industry and Autoplas, Inc., but are paying additional dividends. The Erie

County Water System will allow adequate water supplies to both of the new schools going up on the north end of town. The Erie County Water System tap acts as a redundant source of water for the City in the time of drought or catastrophic event at the Water Treatment Plant. Through our tie into Erie County we are able to purchase water from Erie County at essentially what our cost would be to produce it.

Not many cities have that advantage.

The City is further pleased to announce that Wilbert Plastic Services has solidified their investment in Bellevue. They have been awarded a low interest loan from the State of Ohio to purchase their building. They will be adding new jobs to their staff to bring their total employment level to above 160. Wilbert Plastic Services has certainly been a welcomed addition to Bellevue’s manufacturing base and a valued corporate citizen.

Pardon me boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?

Tucked away just south of downtown Bellevue on a historic plot of land is a wealth of local history which is preserved and presented at the Mad River & NKP Railroad Society Museum.

Located at 253 Southwest Street, this compact yet extensive collection of railroad history began in 1976 as the City’s lasting Bicentennial Project.

Starting with one wooden caboose and large dreams, a fledgling group of railroad enthusiasts began building a project that has spanned three decades and grown to become a nationally known and respected institution. The group’s name honors the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad, the first one chartered in Ohio and also the Nickel Plate Road which is the local railroad that placed Bellevue on the map in the late 1880’s when major shops and division point were located here. The site the museum is built on is the former location of Henry Flagler’s mansion. Flagler was one of the major investors of the Standard Oil Company and then

went on to develop Florida by building the Florida East Coast Railroad which opened the area for tourist travelers.

The museum collection includes locomotives both steam and diesel, freight and passenger cars, cabooses and unique items such as a “V” blade snow plow, an operational 200 ton wrecker and the first dome passenger car built in the United States. Many of the cars contain displays that interpret various aspects of railroad history. The museum also sports a restored depot, watchman’s tower and Section House.

Making this museum collection unique is the fact that you can climb into the locomotive cabs, sit in the Engineer’s seat or step into the cabooses and see how the early Conductors worked and lived when on the road. A modern passenger coach, sleeper car, dome and dining car portray passenger travel in the late 1940’s-50’s era before the automobile became the preferred travel mode and took the passengers

away from the rails.

A Busy Year for Bellevue Development Corp.

Fuhr Executive Director Businesses are expanding, employees are being hired and trained, 21st century infrastructure is being installed, new state-of-the-art schools are being built, local banks are lending to meet the needs of local businesses, new opportunities are looming and aggressive efforts are underway to attract even more businesses to the area. No, this is not China. This is Bellevue, Ohio.

2010 was marked with significance for Bellevue.

The economy started showing signs of life, excitement over the construction of our two new schools took wing, our local manufacturing companies began expansion programs and legitimate inquiries for industrial and commercial sites were on the rise.

One thing I’ve learn while working with the Bellevue Development Corporation for the past seven months is how well Bellevue tends to downplay its accomplishments, its core strengths and its progressive spirit. Highlighting these is long overdue. So here we go.

It is no secret that the economic downturn of 2008 adversely impacted the entire Nation, and Bellevue was by no means isolated from its effects.

The economy was in trouble, yet Bellevue stood firm in its commitment to the future by undertaking the construction of new schools. Not one, but two new schools. What does this say about Bellevue?

The citizens of Bellevue recognize that the very foundation for our future economic well-being rests upon our ability to deliver a world-class education to our youth. Take particular note that the challenges of the future are being addressed while maintaining complete fiscal responsibility.

Bellevue is up to the challenges.

While manufacturing operations were being shuttered across the Country or exported to foreign

lands, the Bellevue manufacturers withstood the ravages of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. When the very first signs of economic recovery began to appear, many of our local manufacturers began moving forward quickly with business expansion plans.

Operating a successful business during good economic times is a difficult proposition at best, especially in highly competitive manufacturing environments. But maintaining profitability, or even viability, during less than optimum economic conditions is an entirely different matter. Yet our local businesses weathered this massive economic recession. It takes more than raw business skills to commit capital and resources to production expansion when the economy has not fully recovered. Not nearly enough credit is given to existing companies that are making it through this recession through courage, artful planning and a vision of a brighter future. Bellevue’s manufacturers have it.

An excellent example of this is our very own Capital Aluminum & Glass Corporation. This standout local Company specializes in the manufacture of energy efficient architectural and commercial aluminum products including windows, doors, storefront and curtainwalls. Over this last year, they hired and trained over thirty new employees, added cutting edge new designs to their product portfolio, new production equipment and are currently exploring the expansion of their distribution network globally.

During October, 2010, Capital Aluminum & Glass Corporation received national certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise by the Ohio River Valley Women’s Business Council. All of these achievements were accomplished during the great recession. Innovative? Yes. Progressive? No doubt.

EHOVE Student Presented with Scholarship Norwalk Lions Club members and the Bader Family, owners of Summit Motorsports, presented a $2,000 scholarship to Matthew Griggs of Norwalk, a student in EHOVE’s Adult Education Firefighter program.

The Bader Family scholarship is funded entirely

by The Norwalk Lions Club, through monies earned staffing the Beer Booth at Summit Motorsports. The Lions Club has been very generous with EHOVE sponsoring scholarships since 2007. The recipients are selected by the Lions Club. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide educational assistance to deserving EHOVE Adult Career Center students.

Wilbert Plastic Services Inc., have formally announced expansion projects approaching $15 million of combined new investment in new building construction and production equipment at their Bellevue facilities.

Expansions such as these do not take place in a vacuum. Bellevue is quite fortunate in that a strong spirit of cooperation exists between local industry and our local government.

Without the outstanding local government support that we enjoy, it would be difficult for projects such as this to move forward.

The Bellevue Downtown saw significant improvements during the City’s streetscape project of 2006, which widened the sidewalks, created additional parking and new street lamp lighting was installed.

A number of Bellevue action committees have recently come together to develop concerted plans for further Bellevue Downtown district improvements.

The Bellevue Public Library acquired three buildings with the intent of removing these to allow for future expansion. Since the initial grant application has been recently approved, this much anticipated project can now move forward. Grant applications being spearheaded by the Bellevue Historical Society are also underway for preliminary exterior renovation of the historic Tremont House.

While these two highly visible projects will significantly improve the appearance of the Downtown, there are more improvements in store.

Has the lingering 2008 recession impacted Bellevue? Certainly it has. But the people who live and work in Bellevue have made the decided choice to let nothing stand in the way of a brighter and more prosperous future. Their achievements prove this.

The museum has a three track coach yard for storage of privately-owned rail equipment, a former Lakeshore & Michigan Southern Railroad freight house which now serves as the Society’s offices, a pole barn that covers two tracks for large restorations, and the Monument Station that was formerly a cemetery monument cutting plant that now houses a large collection of displays including two cabooses and a fullsize replica of the “Sandusky”, the first locomotive owned by the Mad River and Lake Erie railroad which linked Sandusky and Bellevue.

The Mad River and NKP Railroad Society Inc. was incorporated in Ohio as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational institution and in fulfilling this mission, the museum conducts many school-tour field trips as well as conducts courses for earning the merit badge for the Boy Scouts of America. The museum is also a major supporter of the nationally known Operation Lifesaver Grade Crossing Safety Educational Program.

spent in preserving and restoring the rolling stock. Display committees also work with the curatorial staff to develop new displays to keep a fresh look on the inside of the equipment and buildings. The Society houses an archives and library for research.

Several events are scheduled throughout the year to raise funds to sustain the collection and preserve the equipment. One of the most popular is the “Dinner in the Diner” events.

These full-course meals are prepared by our Executive Chef in an approved kitchen facility and then are served in the dining car by our volunteer staff in the traditional first-class style once so common on the long distance passenger trains. We can accommodate a 48 person seating and each dinner event has a set theme from the hospitality room through the dinner to dessert. These dinners are available to the public and are advertised on the Society website.

The museum sponsors other events throughout the year such as our large Annual Collector Car Show and periodic hosting of national conventions of several rail groups.

What Is Happening in the Bellevue City School District?

By Kim Schubert Superintendent Bellevue City School District The Bellevue City School District has experienced major cost savings by elementary school consolidation and going “green.”

Bellevue previously operated seven school buildings with the framework of five elementary buildings, one junior high and one high school. As enrollment declined the operation of five elementary buildings was not a cost effective option for our district. The five neighborhood schools all housed grades K-6.

The district has closed two elementary buildings and consolidated all buildings by grade level. This move alone saved the district approximately $1 million. The district is currently working with the Ohio School Facilities Commission to build one centralized elementary school and a new middle school which will be completed in August 2012. At the conclusion of this project the Bellevue City School District will have three total buildings in operation for our enrollment of 2100 students.

reductions with a savings in maintenance and staff costs, but it has also resulted in a more collaborative educational environment for our students.

The new middle school is expected to go out to bid at the end of January, along with an early site bid package for the new elementary school. The bid package for the new elementary school is expected to go out in late February or early March.

Both of the new school buildings are expected to be open in August 2012.

The district has completed a HB 264 energy savings project at our high school which is resulting in reduced energy usage and utility costs. A 150’ high wind turbine has been erected on our high school campus by Northern Power. The wind turbine is expected to provide electrical power for at least 35% of Bellevue High School. In addition to our high school physics class and engineering club studying this new technology, the community will have the opportunity to monitor the energy savings produced by the wind turbine. The Bellevue City School District has taken steps to develop and carry out a renewable energy program with projects like the wind turbine, new high efficiency boilers and energy

The recent consolidation and energy savings programs that have been implemented have resulted in cost savings for the district, while providing new educational opportunities for our students. In light of these savings, we continue to experience an uncertainty in state funding for next year. We will have our .5% Income Tax and $925,000 Emergency levy renewals on the May ballot. Even with the instability of state funding and the likelihood that we will experience a cut in funding, we have decided to only ask our voters to renew these issues. We are not asking for any new or additional funds at this time, but these continued funding sources are critical for our school district. I have a deep gratitude to the citizens of Bellevue for the support that they provide to us.

A Busy and Rewarding Year at The Bellevue Hospital The Bellevue Hospital (TBH) saw several major equipment upgrades completed in 2010, while

celebrating a three-peat of a national award. The local facility welcomes 2011 by celebrating six years in their new 1400 W. Main Street facility.

TBH is one of Bellevue’s biggest employers, with over 400 employees.

Some 5,500 local and area residents turn to TBH each month for inpatient, outpatient and emergency medical procedures and care. And, in 2010, the hospital recorded 372 births in the Family Birthing Center; 2,091 admissions; 16,334 emergency room visits; 3,864 surgical procedures; 33,421 imaging procedures; and 33,477 rehabilitation procedures.

LARGEST OPEN-BORE MRI IN FOURCOUNTY AREA TBH s Radiology Department is now offering the latest and most sophisticated fixed (1.5 Tesla) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit available – the Vantage Titan ™ MRI unit from Toshiba. The new ultra-short, open-bore MRI is nearly 20 percent larger than TBH’s previous MRI. The new MRI also features the largest available clinical field-of-view (FOV) of 55 x 55 x 50 centimeters allowing your doctor to see what he needs to see but still keep you comfortable while in the scanner.

The hospital s MRI unit is the largest open-bore MRI in the four-county area, according to Marc Schoen, TBH s Diagnostic Imaging Leader. This unit replaces both the previous fixed and mobile MRI units. With the addition of this new Toshiba MRI, TBH now has the largest opening, and highest quality, of any MRI unit in the area, fixed or mobile, added Schoen.

MRIs use a combination of radio waves and a strong magnetic field to create computer reconstructed images of the body.

The Vantage Titan system offers the largest and widest bore available with a significant increase in signal to noise ratio which results in better images said David West, M.D, a board certified Radiologist with TBH s Diagnostic Imaging Department. The large field of view is unique for this bore size and produces high-quality images without compromising overall image performance. In addition, the unit offers more room for patients and decreased noise creating a better experience for the patient.

Because of the wide opening, this new Vantage Titan unit is perfect for claustrophobic patients,

especially since 70% of all procedures can be performed feet first, meaning the patient s head can be kept outside the bore.

Overall, with the larger open-bore, we can offer imaging for patients up to 550 pounds and it is also a real benefit for patients who are claustrophobic, added Dr. West.

DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY NOW BEING OFFERED Women who undergo routine mammograms at TBH s Women’s Imaging Center now have the latest diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography. The state-of-the-art system, Selenia™ digital mammography together with the breast cushion, MammoPad®, from Hologic™, offers comfort, warmth and the latest in mammogram technology.

Although the machine itself will look the same to patients, it is the technology inside the machine that defines the new service. Digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is acquired and, more importantly, viewed. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images. These features allow the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern.

Patients with very dense breasts will especially benefit from digital mammography, said David West, M.D., board certified radiologist at TBH. And, we have a radiologist on-site to read the results and to discuss those results with the patient.

In this way, the patient gets much more personal service.

Continued Dr. West, The main benefit for our patients with this new technology, is they can come here for their screening mammogram, and, if needed, use the Women s Imaging Center s other services, including diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound procedures, and computerguided stereotactic breast biopsy procedures all in the same location, making us their full-service Imaging Center stop.

Dr. West added, should the need arise after a diagnostic mammogram has been completed, breast biopsies can be performed within a matter of a couple of days meaning less time waiting for the patient.

In addition to offering superior mammography technology, TBH offers a softer, warmer mammogram by using the MammoPad breast cushion for every patient. MammoPad has been clinically demonstrated to reduce discomfort, associated with mammograms, for most women.

Enrollment up for Spring Term at Terra Terra Community College has posted another enrollment increase for spring semester.

There are 6.5 percent more students attending classes this spring than last year and 4.5 percent more in Full Time Equivalency as compared to 2010.

There are more students (3,541) enrolled this spring than there were last fall (3,516).

“Make Yourself Comfortable” in a Unique Bellevue Guesthouse The Davenports (Paul and Janell) of Bellevue, Ohio opened their Harpster-Davenport Guesthouse to the public in the spring of 2010 with little fanfare but with much success.

Not many people in the United States are familiar with the term “guesthouse”.

They are, however, a well-known commodity in most parts of the world. A true guesthouse is far different than a better-known bed and breakfast. A guesthouse offers the traveler more private living space including a well-stocked kitchen for self-made meals, a private entry as well as other important amenities not often found elsewhere such as Wi-Fi, cable/satellite, personal concierge and business services, hot tub and private outdoor dining area. What these differences mean to the traveler is the ability to enjoy “home style” lodging combined with a full range of other creature comforts and no other guests to contend with.

Travelers from many parts of the country enjoyed not only the Davenport’s hospitality but also the casual ambiance, affordability and most importantly the new, old world concept in lodging for travelers. Guesthouses, as stated before, have been utilized for many years all over the world but have not been introduced here in the U.S to any extent until recently. This concept is changing. It is a change many guests have taken advantage of and heartily agree was a long awaited and welcome addition to other more conventional quarters.

Not only have the Davenports inaugural years’ successfulness spurned them on, they too have

taken pleasure in the enjoyment they in turn receive from their various guests. Now they are equally happy and proud to announce their newest addition in living quarters for travelers.

As unique, comfy and causal as their existing guesthouse is, they are now in the process of completing the “Bunkhouse”. This antiquelooking, shed-roofed building has been re-created from salvaged barn components and other vintage structures from numerous sites surrounding Bellevue.

Its theme or more precisely character is that as the name suggests, a bunkhouse. The Bunkhouse features handhewn beams, barn siding, interior antique board and batten wall cladding, reclaimed metal roofing, wooden horse stall dividers used as porch railings combined with an interior wellstocked with a variety of primitive style antiques and cozy furnishings.

Both the guesthouse and now too the bunkhouse are based upon the circa 1842 homestead. It was originally built by David Harpster and family. Samuel T. Sparrow first purchased the land via a land grant issued and signed by then President of the United States, Martin Van Buren. David, his mother and two brothers moved here from Pennsylvania and all built homes. The two brother’s homes are still standing and can been seen from the HarpsterDavenport Guesthouse. One of the interesting facts of the Harpster-Davenport Guesthouse is the origins of a local Evangelic church had its roots within this home. The three brothers and one other local gentleman created a house-to-

house service to provide for their spiritual needs.

The church continued and expanded as the area was further settled and now rests at its current location in Bellevue. The Davenport’s home is depicted in the 1893 Sandusky County Atlas as

a steel engraving.

In that engraving one can see Mr. Harpster heading back to the main barn as his wife is waving goodbye to a female friend aboard a horse-drawn surrey.

This rendering would readily suggest that the three had just finished an enjoyable lunch together and then all headed back to their daily chores. It’s not that much different than what happens at the HarpsterDavenport Guesthouse on a daily basis. Family, friends and travelers coming together and are always welcome.

TASTE of the North Coast Debuts in February People looking to get a TASTE of the North Coast can do just that on Thursday, February 24 when the Erie County Chamber of Commerce will host the area s first-ever food, wine, and beer tasting event from 5-8 pm at Kalahari Convention Center.

TASTE of the North Coast will showcase the region's restaurants, retail food purveyors and student culinary skills. It will also feature a separate beer and wine tasting, a student competition, and a silent auction.

We are really excited to bring the TASTE of the North Coast to Sandusky and we anticipate attracting visitors from as far away as Cleveland, Toledo and Columbus,” said John Moldovan, president of the Erie County Chamber. “This will be a great way for event attendees to sample the variety and quality of culinary choices that

the area eateries, wineries and breweries have to offer. We are also pleased to have the participation of local student chefs showing off their talents in a competition/demonstration.

Ticket prices are $20 for admission into the event, which includes 15 food tasting tickets.

For participants also interested in the beer and wine tasting feature, $10 tickets can be purchased which includes 10 sampling tickets. Additional food or wine/beer tasting tickets can be purchased for $1 each. Food vendors will have culinary selections available for various pricing levels depending on selection and portion sizes offered.

Wine and beer sampling prices will also vary depending on the particular selection.

We currently have over 16 different food vendors represented, with additional participants joining each day. Our wine and beer tastings

will feature a variety of spirits for participants to sample. Current participants include popular local restaurants like Cooker Bar & Grill, Crush Wine Bar, Zinc Brasserie, Marconi s Italian Restaurant, and more, shares Ed Hoty, owner of Danny Boy s Italian Eatery and Chairman of the 2011 TASTE of the North Coast event.

FTMC Awards Area Schools Almost $30,000 in Education Grants Local school districts are interested in providing their students with hands-on learning, interaction and continued technological advances. Through Fisher-Titus Medical Center’s Health Education Grants, 10 local schools will be better able to achieve goals and make math, science and health education fun for their students.

“Thank you for sharing your unique programs with us and most importantly sharing it with our area schools that have such a significant responsibility for the futures of our communities,” said Patrick J. Martin, FTMC president. “We are happy to help each school district achieve their goals in innovative ways. This is another example where Fisher-Titus Medical Center is living its vision which is ‘to enhance the quality of life for each person we serve.’”

FTMC’s Health Education Grant Program was established to fund innovative educational programs in the areas of math, science and health for schools in the Fisher-Titus service area.

Since 1996, 139 grants have been awarded through this program. Every year, FTMC awards local school districts health education grants. During a luncheon ceremony Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, the Medical Center awarded this year’s grants to 10 local school districts, totaling $29,740.

More than $662,000 has been distributed in the 15 years the program has been in existence, according to Tom Bleile of FTMC’s Board of Directors.

“Our board, medical staff and employees believe that enhancing the educational foundation of our schools makes the entire region a better place to live, work and worship,” Bleile said. “We take our job seriously as a community resource and we feel that anything we can do to enhance the educational process benefits our entire community.”

This year $29,740 was distributed to Berlin-Milan Local Schools, Monroeville Local Schools, New London Local Schools, Norwalk City Schools, Norwalk Catholic School, North Point Educational Service Center, South Central Local Schools, Wellington Local Schools, Western Reserve Local Schools and Willard City Schools.

Applicants were required to submit a grant proposal to Fisher-Titus that included a detailed explanation of the project to be funded. Grants were approved by the Fisher-Titus Medical Center board of directors.

Under this program, school districts may receive grants up to $3,000.

During the luncheon, each recipient presented a brief summary of the program last year’s grant funded.

Take advice from a financial coach People have advisors for various aspects of their life, whether religion, athletics, tax or legal, among others. However, investing is one of the most difficult activities many ever undertake.

Your PC Can Make April 15th Less “Taxing!”

By Don Knaur For those of you that have been reading this column for a while, this article may seem familiar. This is the fifth year I have printed it, but let me assure you it has been updated and all of the information is current and relevant.

It’s fast approaching tax time and if you do your own Income Tax preparation and filing, your PC can save you a lot of time and effort. If you do an Internet search for “Income Tax Software,” you will find dozens of places to get tax preparation software. No one has the time to check them all out. Some of them that I researched appear to be less

than helpful. I have used my PC for over 14 years to prepare and file my taxes, including Schedule C for my business.

If you choose to use Tax Preparation Software, there are several options available: 1) Buy the software in a store, such as Staples or Walmart 2) Buy the software online and have a CD shipped to you 3) Buy the software online and download it directly to your PC

• Download the software to a folder and then install it

• Install the software directly from the software’s download site 4) Pay for the privilege of doing your taxes online I recommend option 3a as the best choice. It is the quickest, most economical and safest, but you should take the time to back-up the folder with

the downloaded software as soon as you have it installed. Once you have the software backed up, you can reinstall it any time you want, even if you buy a new PC. This is important because of the IRS seven-year rule. The odds are you will replace your PC before the seven years have passed and if you are audited, being able to see the detailed entries can be very helpful.

This year the IRS is offering something new. If you have a Federal Gross Adjusted Income of less than $57,000, the IRS offers you several ways to do a FREE E-file. Just browse the Web Site at www.irs.gov and you will find the options explained. The IRS offers far too many options to be explained here.

Time and space constraints prohibit reviewing anywhere near all of the tax preparation software packages available.

However, three of the better known reputable packages that offer E-filing and the choice of online or offline preparation can be reviewed and seen at the following sites: http://www.turbotax.com/ TurboTax software cost ranges from Free* to $129.95 http://www.hrblock.com/ Tax Cut software cost ranges from Free* to $79.95 http://www.taxact.com/ TaxAct software cost ranges from Free to $54.95 http://www.taxslayer.com TaxSlayer software cost ranges from Free* to $19.95. (Online only) * Caution: This Freeware will not support Schedule C or handle Capital Gains Earnings.

TaxSlayer, which has just started advertising on TV, is the least expensive software listed. However, it has two things going against it. First, it is an on-line only application, which means you have no control over who sees your data. Secondly and even more importantly, customer reviews on their own website are complaining about problems in retrieving the data, Personally, I highly recommend the TaxAct software. I have used it for over 12 years and it is very thorough and user-friendly, as well as economical.

There is no reason for using anything but the free version the first time you use the software. After that, I recommend using the $12.95 Deluxe Version. The reason for upgrading after the first year is that the Deluxe Version allows you to load the past year’s return information with only a click of the mouse. That eliminates your having to enter a lot of the required data; it will automatically fill in names, addresses and ID numbers based on the past data.

It also will allow you to view a

comparison of the two years’ returns before you file this year’s return. With this software, you do your taxes just like you would with a tax preparer. The software asks you the same questions and you answer them with a keyboard instead of verbally. You do not have to be a computer or tax expert to end up with a professional tax return and hopefully a refund.

Tax Act has another excellent feature added, a FAFSA work sheet. This report will enable anyone with College Students in the family to quickly and easily file all of the Student Aid paperwork.

Each of the sites listed above offers not only Federal Tax Preparation, but also State Tax Preparation options.

However, in the State of Ohio, State Income Tax can be done online at a State of Ohio web site. Since all of the information used on a State of Ohio Income Tax Return is pulled from your Federal Tax Return, there is no need for special software to prepare your State Return. Simply go online to http://tax. ohio.gov/ and you will be provided a link to the Ohio E-filing site. It takes just a few minutes and you are finished.

You can also pay taxes online or register for electronic deposit of your refund.

A word of warning, if you opt to pay online and choose to pay by Credit Card, even if it is a Debit Card, there is a sizable surcharge involved. On the other hand, if you enable an electronic transfer from your checking account, there is no cost involved. We are very fortunate that the State of Ohio is on the leading edge of technology when it comes to taking our money. You can even pay other Ohio taxes online as well. There is a site called the Ohio Business Gateway at http://obg.ohio. gov/ and I have been filing and paying my semi-annual sales taxes there for years.

None of us ever look forward to filing our taxes, but possibly the information in this article will help you be a little less wary of the Ides of April (April 15).

Kalahari Resort to Invest $22 Million Kalahari announced it will break ground this March on a $22 million expansion that will more

than double the size of its convention center, making Kalahari Resort-Ohio the only under-one-

roof complex in the Midwest to feature a convention center and hotel of this scope. Having filled a void in the region since opening its 95,000-square-foot convention center in 2006, Kalahari Resort plans to significantly increase its meeting capacity from 2,200 to 5,200 attendees.

The 120,000-square-foot addition, which will bring Kalahari’s convention center total square footage to 215,000, will include a 38,000-squarefoot grand ballroom /expo center, a 12,000-squarefoot junior ballroom, 14 meeting rooms, a 4,000-square-foot themed outdoor plaza connected to an indoor ballroom and 30,000 square feet of pre-function space.

“Many groups we’ve hosted have been surprised to discover the level of our meetings and event offerings. Although groups want to bring larger statewide or national conventions to us, in the past we were able to accommodate their guest room needs, but we couldn’t accommodate their function space needs,” says Maris Brenner, director of sales for Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio.

“We’re excited to open new doors for Kalahari Resort and the surrounding community with our added meeting space which will draw significantly more attendees.”

The authentically African themed resort has generated $27.4 million in taxes and fees for the public sector from 2005 to 2009 thanks to its wide array of offerings that include America’s largest indoor waterpark, outdoor waterpark and adventure park, restaurants, shops and Spa Kalahari. Named business of the year by the Erie County Chamber of Commerce in 2010, Kalahari Resort, the second largest employer in the area with 1,200 employees, will add 141 full-time jobs and 98 one-time construction jobs and as part of its expansion.

“We support this expansion and are excited to see Kalahari Resort continue to grow and bring added visitors to the area, thus spurring economic growth and adding jobs in Erie County,” says Erie County Commissioner Patrick Shenigo. “We’re fortunate to have this level of private investment in our community.”

Kalahari Resort is committed to working with Ohio-based contractors and sub-contractors and will invite them to submit bids through its construction manager, Kraemer Brothers of Plain, Wis. The convention center expansion is expected to open December 2011.

IRA Options Add Value to Employee Benefits We all know how fiscally challenging it is to offer a good employee benefits package these days. There are several IRA options available to help you provide valuable benefits to your employees … and save you tax dollars at the same time!

There are some employee eligibility requirements based on length of service and income.

Health Savings Accounts Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are an alternative benefit you can offer to your employees. HSAs can combine with high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) to create a cost-saving medical plan. If you offer an HDHP option that is HSA-qualified, your employees could take advantage of this account.

What are the benefits for the employer?

Tax advantages – Contributions are tax-deductible for the business.

Flexibility – Employers may make uniform tax-deductible contributions for themselves and each eligible employee up to 25% of earned income or $49,000 annually, whichever is less. The percentage may vary each year depending on what an employer decides is affordable for that year.

Contributions may even be skipped in less profitable years if an employer chooses to do so.

Easy Administration – Once the contributions are made, the employer has no responsibility for the SEP since the IRA belongs to the individual employee. There are no administrative costs and currently no IRS reporting requirements.

But, contributions must be reported to employees in a reasonable manner.

How does the HSA work?

The employee is the account owner, deciding when and how funds are deposited.

Contributions may be made by the employee, the employer or the employee’s family members.

All contributions must be made in the form of cash and are taxdeductible.

The account owner is able to use a debit card or checks to pay for qualified medical expenses, many of which are not normally covered by traditional health plans.

It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure annual contribution limits are not exceeded and that funds are used for qualified medical expenses.

What are the benefits of owning an HSA? Lower health care premiums – Paired with an HDHP, an HSA can reduce insurance premiums you pay as the employer. You may choose to put these savings toward other business needs or contribute a portion of the saved premium dollars directly to employees’ HSA accounts.

Tax advantages – Your contributions as the employer are generally treated as part of the provided health plan and are excludable from your company’s gross income.

Flexibility – An HSA gives your employees more control of their health care dollars since they can use their accounts to pay for qualified medical expenses as they see fit.

Simplified Employee Pension A Simplified Employee Pension is the easiest way for employers to provide retirement benefits. A SEP

SIMPLE Retirement Plan Another retirement benefit option is a Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE), which allows employers to make contributions into a special IRA for each participating employee. Employers with 100 or fewer employees may opt for this type of plan instead of other traditional retirement plans (such as qualified retirement plans, KEOGHs, etc.). Annual IRS reporting by the employer is not required. However, there are rules regarding employee eligibility notification and employee reporting, much like other retirement plans.

One final note: Be sure to consult a tax advisor regarding possible tax advantages before making any retirement benefit decisions.

An Overview

On December 17, 2010, the new 2010 Tax Relief Act was signed by President Obama. In addition to Unemployment and Income Tax provisions, The Act included many temporary changes to Estate & Gift Taxes.

Here is an overview of these changes: Decedents who died in 2010 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; While the new law preserves estate tax repeal and â&#x20AC;&#x153;modified carry-over basis rulesâ&#x20AC;? for deaths in 2010, it offers an option to be subject to a more liberal estate tax along with a â&#x20AC;&#x153;step up in basisâ&#x20AC;? of assets. The estate exemption is $5 million and the top tax rate is 35%. Executors

Unified estate & gift exemptions â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The new law restores unified exemptions for both estate and gift taxes at an overall level of $5 million effective in 2011, with a top tax rate of 35%. The GST tax is an additional tax on gifts and bequests to grandchildren when their parents are still alive. These taxes are lowered effective in 2011 by way of the same adjustment to the exemption and the top tax rate.

These revisions are only for 2011 and 2012.

New portability feature â&#x20AC;&#x201D; This feature applies to deaths of a â&#x20AC;&#x153;predeceased spouseâ&#x20AC;? after December 31, 2010 and before January 1, 2013.

Any unused estate tax exemption from the death of the first spouse is generally available to the surviving spouse, in addition to their own available exemption.

These estate tax revisions are substantial and provide significant planning opportunities, especially during 2011 and 2012, for many tax and non-tax reasons.

Planning Opportunities The new legislation provides an opportunity for taxpayers with estates in excess of $5 Million. The 2010 Tax Relief Act reunifies the gift tax exemption with the estate tax exemption.

The sunset provision in the legislation will return both the estate and gift tax exemption to $1 Million after 2012.

This means that during 2011 and 2012 taxpayers can transfer an additional $4 Million of value from their estate that they will be unable to transfer after 2012. Married persons continue to have the ability to elect to split gifts. With proper planning the gifting windfall in the new legislation can be leveraged by married taxpayers to transfer up to

$10 Million of wealth in 2011 and 2012.

Even greater opportunity exists when the new exemption is used with techniques that involve leveraging through discounting.

Certain estate planning techniques such as Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts, Family Limited Partnerships and Intentionally Defective Grantor Trusts may involve discounting of value for lack of control and lack of marketability.

Annuity requirements of grantor retained annuity trusts lower the value of the underlying security that is gifted.

The ability to apply a discount to a closely held asset can result in the effective transfer of even more â&#x20AC;&#x153;real valueâ&#x20AC;? from an estate. Strategies that were powerful because of this leveraging are even more so now, but the time to take advantage of the increased exemption is limited.

Prior to the enactment of this legislation, taxpayers who owned assets in excess of the estate tax exemption needed to use certain planning techniques in order to get the full benefit of the exemption for each spouse. The most common of these techniques involved an A-B trust structure. The new portability feature allows taxpayers to get the full benefit of the exemption without an A-B trust structure in place. The time frame for portability applies to deaths of a â&#x20AC;&#x153;pre-deceased spouseâ&#x20AC;? in 2011 and 2012, and there is no guarantee Congress will extend this beyond 2012. Taxpayers who have an A-B trust structure in place may want to review their documents and analyze what the effects will be under the new law and after 2012.

I love it when conventional wisdom goes down in flames. Any time a deeply held belief is shown to be false, the world gets a little smarter, a little more sophisticated, a little more effective.

Such is the case with respect to the things we do to motivate ourselves and others. It turns out that threatening employees if they don’t perform may generate a short-term boost, but it damages long-term productivity. More interesting, offering incentives doesn’t work any better. Even positive re-enforcement efforts can boomerang on us if we employ them in the wrong circumstances. So if our current beliefs are wrong, then how do we increase motivation? Read on!

Drive: The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us, by Daniel Pink, Riverhead Books, 2009.

SUMMARY The key to high performance on the job, in school, and in our personal lives rests in each individual’s profound need to direct his or her life, to grow in his or her abilities, and to live in pursuit of a purpose. No other motivator is as powerful over the long-term. Daniel Pink has created an entertaining and thought provoking discussion of the social science research about what motivates human beings. He particularly focuses on the gap between what scientific research has shown and what modern businesses do. While most managers are struggling to find the balance between carrots and sticks to generate proper work habits, researchers have proven that neither approach is effective anymore. In fact, external motivators can be counterproductive in most circumstances. Why? Because they crowd out the internal motivation all of us already have.

KEY LEARNINGS: • The author uses the term “Motivation 2.0” to refer to our current social belief that human beings can be motivated by their managers, teachers and parents. For many generations punishing poor performance and rewarding good worked well, but in the 21st century success more often requires people to be self-motivated. In a flattening world, external tactics often serve us poorly, especially when creativity, initiative and buy-in are important.

In these cases, efforts by managers to motivate with rewards and punishment have the opposite effect.

• Pink didn’t invent the idea that carrots and sticks don’t work anymore. He refers to 128 separate experiments showing that when people expect a reward for performing a task, their internal motivation for doing so is damaged over the longterm. Artists lose motivation when working on commission.

Blood drives are less successful when donors are offered pay. Parents fined for arriving late to meetings did so more often.

Rewards and punishments don’t work in a modern environment because they: 1) extinguish intrinsic motivation, 2) diminish performance, 3) crush creativity, 4) crowd out good behavior, 5) encourage cheating, shortcuts, and unethical behavior, 6) become addictive, and 7) foster short-term thinking.

• That said, to the extent that people need to earn a living, external rewards can be shown to be effective up to the level of meeting basic needs. External motivation can also be applied when the work is so routine or dull that little internal motivation already exists. In such a situation, managers or parents might make sure to explain why the job matters, acknowledge that it is boring, and let people accomplish the task their own way if possible.

• Pink’s premise is that internal motivations (Type I) are more natural and powerful than external ones (Type X.) Those who operate from their inherent desires are connected to higher purpose, outperform

others, are less focused on money, can re-create their efforts over and over endlessly and have higher levels of well-being.

• A key component for maintaining internal motivation is autonomy.

Inasmuch as “management” techniques involve control, they diminish individual choice and therefore reduce motivation.

Referring to one study, Pink tells us that businesses with employees who have individual autonomy (such as Google) outperform by a factor of four those who tightly control staff... and they have one-third the employee turnover. The areas where people need their freedom are Tasks (what to do), Time (when to do it), Technique (how to do it), and Team (who to do it with.) It is important to note that people conditioned to being controlled will often struggle to adjust to a more autonomous environment.

• Humans are inherently motivated to become actively engaged in the things that matter to them. The Gallup Organization has reported that more than 50% of American employees do not feel such engagement at work. Being in “flow” requires working on tasks that are doable but allow us to stretch a notch or so above our current abilities. The concentration and learning such an effort requires is an inherently enjoyable exercise that keeps us working for hours (unless interrupted by an outside “motivator.”) People enjoy getting better and better as they go along.

The key is to make tasks challenging enough to not be dull, but not so much as to be impossible.

• The idea that those who follow a higher calling of their own are happier and more effective is not a new one. Pink’s contribution is to compare the productivity of those who are striving to achieve a purpose with those who are striving to maximize profits. Guess who wins?

That’s right... those who are driven by purpose. Now, when profits are seen as a means to a higher end, people can be perfectly well motivated to achieve them.

Being Honest with Oneself and Your Banker

By Roger Bostdorff I was recently referenced into an account by this company’s bank. I have done work for clients of this bank and have had very good success assisting the company in turning around their business. My first meeting with the account the President started right in on what he wanted me to do. I interrupted him and asked how they had come to give me a call? They explained that the bank had indirectly told them that they needed help and that Roger Bostdorff is someone that some of their clients had used with good success. We went on with our conversation. The client had been founded many years ago by the father of the current President. The President had on his staff, his wife, multiple sons, as well as more than one daughter in-law, etc. This definitely was a family owned and operated business.

The President explained to me what he wanted me to do. He wanted me to help him increase his sales.

He wanted to know how I was going to do that. I explained that I first need to do an analysis of the business to determine what the problem/s were and why. He explained to me that lack of sales was definitely the problem. I suggested that he should let me do some analysis to determine if lack of sales was the problem, or potentially a symptom to a bigger or different problem. He finally agreed and then told me to deal with his bookkeeper and oldest son. I asked to see his financial statements so that I could analyze them as compared to the industry averages.

After doing my analysis it was apparent that sales had indeed suffered over the last year. However, much like most of the US they were living beyond their means. This has gotten our country in trouble as well as my client. My client had far more debt than they should have, their expenses were way out of line as compared to the industry averages and most significantly their inventory was ballooned way above the industry average. I reviewed this with the President’s oldest son and their bookkeeper as directed. We put a plan in place to cut expenses on some items immediately such as cell phones. We also put a plan in place for the bookkeeper to create a report that listed the inventory by date of last sale. I was going to do some further analysis of this data and teach them the process to identify old inventory. We would then create the plan to move it!!

I received the data and started the analysis. They had items that had not sold since 1998. (Have you looked at your inventory lately??) Before I was able to create and document my plan of attack the Son of the Owner called me. He shared with me that his Dad was not in agreement with our plan; in spite of the fact that Dad had instructed me to work with #1 son and his bookkeeper to create the plan. (Strike One) I called Dad to find out the issue. He went on a tirade on the phone explaining how stupid his son was. I am talking over 45 minutes with me barely

getting a word in. I explained that it makes no sense for me to work with his son to create a plan only to have Dad veto it after the fact. I reminded him that I had invited him to attend the meeting, because I had had this very concern, and he declined. We agreed that no future meetings would take place without him in attendance.

The next meeting was enlightening. Before the next meeting Dad had instructed me that he wanted me to create an incentive program for his sales team. I shared with him that I could do this, but what about inventory, expenses, which if we were able to get under control could reduce his debt. He committed to me that we would discuss this at the next meeting.

However, my main focus should be incentive program.

The team met. There were 5 people in the room. At one point in the meeting the brothers were screaming at each other and Dad was trying to talk over the screams. I finally explained with some language that my mother would not be proud of that this was NOT the way to run a business meeting. We need to stop screaming and start working on the issues. We got to the point where we set up the date for the next meeting with “To Do’s assigned for all of us. The sons left and Dad explained the shortcoming of his sons.

The apple had not fallen far from the tree. (Strike #2) The date of the next meeting was fast approaching.

I received a call that due to the holiday season they could not make this meeting. We rescheduled. I asked about the progress of the “To Do’s” onncbj1110AHAC.pdf their end and Dad told me that he and his sons had not had time to focus on the agreed upon assignments. (Strike #3) Dad assured me that his family will have their “To Do’s” “To Done,” at our next meeting.

The next appointment was at 1PM. The oldest son and bookkeeper were in attendance but Dad was not there. Dad finally showed up 20 minutes later. I began asking question regarding the cut in cell phonesnothing done, # of people on staff-no cuts had been made or identified, what about addressing the reduction in inventory? Dad exploded by telling me that my questions were “None of my daXX business!”

At this point we decided to not work together any further.

This story is not about me getting fired. Although I can honestly say, that had they not decided to part company, I was going to suggest it. In fact, I mentioned that if Dad did not want my advice then he should stop wasting his money and my time in the prior meeting.

What this is really about is being honest with oneself. Dad never wanted my advice. He felt

he knew how to run his business without outside interference. He just needed the bank’s $$. Dad got me engaged to simply appease the bank. Now what Dad does not know is what the bank will do when he asks for more credit. Our country has had a difficult time the last few years by living beyond our means.

Many companies are suffering the same issues.

Turning sales around in a time when unemployment is high is NOT impossible but it is challenging.

Therefore, to buy yourself more runway/time you need to watch the expense side of your business like a hawk. However, even more importantly you need to insure that your emotional attachment to your business does not cloud your decision making process.

Finally, in a family business in particular, if you are grooming a son or daughter to take over eventually he/she needs to gain the knowledge and the confidence to do so. Belittling this son/daughter in front of them or even behind their back does neither.

KIDS AND MONEY

By Jeff Roth Jon and Eileen Gallo have written several books on being a “Financially Intelligent Parent.”

What a concept! Their focus is how to properly teach young children the meaning and use of money. They got my attention with their large plastic piggy bank with four compartments.

Each compartment when full empties out of a separate leg.

The compartments are named as follows: 1. SAVE; 2. SPEND; 3. DONATE; 4.

INVEST. Think what can be taught with the proper use of this bank. The lessons on the proper attitude and use of money begin at the age of five not eighteen when it is too late. Discussing which compartment to put those two dollars from Grandmother can teach lifetime lessons.

It is imperative to talk to children at an early age about money. Children learn through your money behaviors. Children need to know the difference between spending to meet a real need and spending to impress others. Often overlooked is the importance of charity and doing for others rather than yourself. Early lessons on this subject can leave a lasting impression.

The attitudes and actions of parents about money has more affect on children then the amount of money they possess. Open parental fights about money in front of children have long lasting effects on children. It can teach that money is the cause of anger, hostility, resentment and tension. A

workaholic who is never home can teach that making money is more important than meaningful family time. Money is not good or bad, it is what you do with it and what you teach your children about it that is important.

Think how you look at money. Now think back to how your parents thought of money. Is your view exactly like theirs or the exact opposite as a result of watching your parents? Upon reflection, did your parents view money as evil or the necessity of success? The use of money to buy “love” can have the direct opposite result in later years.

Outside forces can have a major influence on your child’s view of money. Think of Saturday morning and those commercials. This is the perfect time to interact with your child teaching the difference among “liking,” “wanting” and “needing” that toy or game.

Children learn from your stated and unstated view of money and spending. Children want guidelines and need to be taught the difference between like, want and need. If the television is the babysitter, followed by the purchase of everything they tell your child he needs, the result will be a child with a need for instant gratification.

If you do not have the right parameters, a child expects to own everything he sees and soon resents you when he doesn’t get that GI Joe. This expectation can last throughout his life.

A charitable attitude needs to start at an early age.

This is the opportunity to teach children that there are uses of money other than for consumption.

Paying money for doing chores if not done correctly teaches a child that he has a right to be paid for a task that he should realize is his responsibility as a

A positive concept talks about giving a teenager a prepaid or set amount credit card for all of his expenses. He must determine what is important and how best to spend his money. He learns to spend within his means. He further learns the proper use of a credit card. The statement reflects his spending habits and can be a guide for future spending.

Monroeville based Janotta & Herner Inc., a design build general contractor, will be turning 50 years old in 2012.

Since the company’s founding, there have been three presidents. The first being the company’s co-founder Jim Herner, followed by Mel Miller, and the most recent, Ken Schafer. On January 1st, 2011 a fourth JHI executive stepped into the President’s position as Jim Limbird, a 33 year JHI veteran became the company’s leader. Limbird previously held the position of Vice President of Field Operations, a job he held for over 17 years.

According to Limbird, “JHI has been

extremely successful during Ken Schafer’s time as President. I hope to be able to continue that success and with the team we have assembled here at JHI, I feel confident we will exceed our greatest expectations.”

Leaving the company’s top office does not mean retirement. Ten years ago, when Mel Miller stepped down as president, he assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Ken Schafer will be taking on that role as Miller becomes a regular member of the board.

This progression allows the experience of leading the company to continue to benefit the upcoming executives and insure a smooth and seamless move into the future. Janotta & Herner employs 130 people and operates in 7 counties in northern Ohio.

Dr. Jason Sneed Accepts Fellowship

Dr. David Jump named Mercy Willard Chief of Staff

Firelands Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce that Jason Sneed, DO, was recently accepted at the Plus One Neuromusculoskeletal Fellowship at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine. A current Family Practice Resident at Firelands, Dr. Sneed will begin his Fellowship upon his graduation from Firelands Regional Medical Center’s Medical Education program in June of 2011.

Originally from Manassas, Virginia, Dr. Sneed received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia.

David Jump, D.O. was elected as Mercy Willard Hospital’s Chief of Staff, according to Lynn Detterman, President & CEO at Mercy Willard Hospital.

Jump, who specializes in family medicine, replaces Dr. Bill Back, who completed a twoyear term on December 31, 2010. Other Medical Staff Officers for 2011 include: Chief of Staff Elect – Robert Secor, M.D. (Family Medicine); Secretary/Treasurer – Jeffrey Sizemore, D.O. (Family Medicine); as well as Past Chief of Staff – Bill Back, M.D. (Internal Medicine).

As the Chief of Staff, Dr. Jump will also serve

as a member of Mercy Willard’s Board of Trustees during his term. As Chief of Staff Elect, Dr. Secor will also serve as a member of Mercy Willard’s Board of Trustees during his term.
