2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT
VISION A bridge to your future. MISSION We are committed to providing relevant information, books, media, technology and programs for all ages in a safe and friendly environment through the service of well trained staff. VALUES Service • Trust • Dedication • Leadership
Seniors. Parents. Children. Job seekers. Students. Hobbyists. Readers. New citizens. Researchers. Small business owners. Each and every day, thousands of individuals stop by one of our three branches or find us online at our 24-7 virtual branch. And we’re so thrilled to be here to help each person explore, learn and grow. 2016-17 was a fantastic year for us. Our renovation was definitely a highlight, as was the launch of our redesigned website. But we also did a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure we meet all of your unique needs. Please read on for more of our accomplishments from the past year. In the coming year, we look forward to a refresh of the Fiction room, with new paint and furniture; new picture book shelving for easier browsing; and new smart technology in our discussion rooms. We’re excited for these, and many more improvements to our facilities and services. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly in my first few months as Executive Director, and thank you for continuing to support your Library.
Monica Harris Executive Director

A renovation created The Commons. This space houses our collections of DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and video games; includes Workshop, a new programming room; and adds more than 140 new seats for patrons to work, study and collaborate.
•
We launched our redesigned, mobile-friendly website in April 2017. The site also features a new events calendar and new catalog.

In January 2017, Monica Harris became our third executive director. Annie Miskewitch joined us in June 2017 as the new deputy director.

A new circulating collection of toys is available from all Library locations. You can now check out toys and enjoy them at home.

Library-wide events, including Comic Con, Maker Day, Harry Potter Night and LEGO® Design Contest, drew thousands of patrons to the Library and let families learn and play together with hands-on activities for all ages.

2016-17 HIGHLIGHTS •
We added new online learning tools. Treehouse teaches web design and development, and Miss Humblebee’s Academy gives pre-k children a fun, safe space to learn online.
•
We forged a strong partnership with Schaumburg Park District’s Spring Valley Nature Center for StoryWalk®, featuring two different books and three special storytime events.
•
Our Pop-Up Library visited more than 25 different locations, including schools, apartment complexes, community events and more. With each visit, we bring the resources and activities of the Library out into the community for patrons who cannot easily visit one of our three locations.
•
Behind the scenes, we transitioned to a new accounting software, new bank and new investment firm – all so we can be a good steward of your tax dollars.
•
We refreshed several spaces, including new paint in kidsZone, new furniture in the Tween Space and new paint and carpet in the Conference Room.
•
A new early learning area is big fun for our littlest learners with a weaving wall, marble run, light table and more.

In the 2016/17 fiscal year, the Library underwent a $1.8 million renovation in The Commons. This renovation was funded strictly through the reserves of the building and equipment fund, without aquiring any debt issuance.
We’re proud to be a trusted, responsible financial steward for our community. We are a debt-free organization, with no outstanding bonds.
