HISTORIC MURAL COMING It won’t be long before a beautiful new park opens in Schaumburg, right across from the library. But Heritage Park, at the northwest corner of Roselle and Schaumburg roads, will have something most parks do not – a pathway into antiquity. Park visitors will have access to “a walkable area containing a pair of mural walls that will feature images from Schaumburg’s rich history” according to Mayor Al Larson’s special update letter earlier this year. Many of the mural’s images and their captions were provided by Local History Librarian Jane Rozek, who researched and scanned photos for the village’s new project. Our photos combined with those provided by the Schaumburg Historical Society and individual contributors to complete the historic mural. “The library’s archive was an invaluable source for selecting pho-

15

tos, as well as providing detailed, historically accurate descriptions,” said Betsy Armistead, director of cultural services for the Village of Schaumburg. Sources from the village say the park is tentatively scheduled to open late summer/early fall, and will incorporate similar architectural elements and materials in an effort to match Town Square and Veterans Gateway Park, located on the opposite corner. If you are interested in the mural walls, with their depictions of local history, you might want to explore our Illinois Collection on the second floor or peruse our History of Schaumburg Township blog at www.SchaumburgLibrary. org, where you’ll find photos and interesting facts about Schaumburg Township’s history.
