TREND GUIDE

TREND GUIDE What is probably the most exciting part of our work here at BOEN is looking at the trends of tomorrow. In order to understand what will shape the world of interior design in the future, as your Style Advisor, we do all that we can to recognise tendencies and trends at an early stage. Together with internationally renowned interior trend expert Gudy Herder, we visit trade fairs and shows, talk to designers, host workshops and follow lots of international blogs. The findings from this work are then incorporated directly into our product development process. The results of this exciting “influence” is something that you can experience in our new hardwood floors. These floors do not chase after trends, but allow you to create the latest and most interesting trends yourself. Whether you’re looking at the hip trend for dramatic black tones, the ever more popular ‘Pause’ trend, which stands for cosiness and authenticity, the denim trend, the trend for tone-in-tone colour palettes or the mega trend ‘Essential’ – a return to handcrafted tradition and naturalness: BOEN not only has floors to go with all these and many other wonderful trends, but we also provide all the inspiration that you need. Enjoy exploring!

DRAMA IS THE NEW BLACK Whether you’re pro-darkness or not, you cannot argue that black rules the interior design world.

1

In recent years only a few pioneer designers and stylists, such as Abigail Ahern and Lotta Agaton, have been paving the way for a bolder application of the colour black. Today, you cannot only find black furniture and interior accessories, but entire interiors are now being painted black, from floor to ceiling. It certainly is a daring trend, which is probably why it hasn’t taken the interior design world by storm. But with more and more gorgeous and successfully applied styling examples using black, consumers are becoming convinced: studies (source Akzo Nobel) have shown that about 40% of consumers are actively searching for inspiration around the ‘Black’ trend. Black is synonymous with sleek, sophisticated style and a rather masculine elegance. But it is not just the fashion and interior design world that is succumbing to this elegant, masculine palette – other industries, such as food, prop styling, architecture, artisan work and even the beauty industry are all involved.

TREND GUIDE

4 5

HOW CAN YOU IMPLEMENT THIS TREND? Black can actually be quite a warm shade when the paint on walls is thickened with pigment and turns matt. It’s always the glossy effect that gives a colder appearance.

6 7

Initially, it was a widespread misunderstanding that black didn’t work in small rooms or areas with little or no daylight. In fact, quite the opposite is true: black is easier to apply in areas with little or no daylight, for example where an eclectic art collection and a generous amount of texture will create a more exciting contrast. In small spaces with little natural light the best advice is not to fight nature, but rather to embrace the darkness and create a dramatic, cocoonlike interior. Black is no longer being combined with copper in 2017, and metal accessories with brass finishes are taking over. Natural wood is a great ally in frames and flooring while large plants in terracotta pots make perfect add-ons. Elegance can be given to all-black interiors by complementing them with little specks of dark green or blue.

Thinking of redecorating? For us, it is important to keep up to date with the latest trends in interior design and create matching hardwood floors that are infused with style and atmosphere. Whether you come from the furnishing or interior design industry or simply have a passion for furnishing your home in a stylish and trendconscious way, our latest hardwood floors will make every room shine; for example with an expressive dark black or anthracitecoloured floor. Strong colours with matt surfaces are the best choice for the black colour trend. An important aspect is to showcase the magic of the wood: its grain and incomparable depth, warmth and vibrancy, even with dark tones. This is why the sur faces are brushed – in order to emphasis their natural structure optimally. We are celebrating this trend with two new black hardwood floors. These floors are a good choice for the Classic Elegance or the Urban Contrast interior style. Uncertain about what furnishing styles go with these floors and this expressive trend? Then get to know our style worlds. You can find more information here: www.boen.com

PAUSE

2

PAUSE Pause is a lifestyle trend that is all about deep relaxation. The inner peace that everyone is seeking and our need to express ourselves is mirrored in the designs. This trend is about feeling at ease, consciously seeking comfort and taking a long, deep breath. Even though it has the same anti-digital, anti-fast-paced approach as the former ‘Essential’ trend, it is quite the contrary in its realisation. The designs are not as wild and raw; they are quieter, more tender, delicate and contemplative. Time is a luxury and reflective thinking is key. The cosmetic colour palette is not only pleasing to the eye because of the wide and harmonious colour variety; it has a deeper meaning that just aesthetics. We choose our home to be our healing temple where we can flee into a world of beauty. The soft tones are nicely accentuated in all the fabrics, products and interiors on display, and there is also a strong emphasis on the shapes and forms of the products. In contrast to our demanding workaday lives, the colours and designs of this peace-embracing furniture offer protection and are like a second skin. This way, we feel secure, sheltered and fully authentic – we can be ourselves, at least in our homes. 1

Interiors don’t need to be bold and colourful to make a statement - these refined living zones don’t have to shout about their style - their poetic frugality adds to a rather tech-free lifestyle. This trend has been evolving from very abstract biomorphiclooking furniture into a more day-to-day look. A look that we can create in our homes and that adds much-needed texture via tactile furniture, such as that by Nendo. We’d like to emphasise one particular example here: Issey Miyake asked Nendo to make furniture out of the pleated paper that is produced in huge amounts during the process of making pleated fabric, and usually abandoned as an unwanted by-product. Our solution to this challenge transformed a roll of pleated paper into a small chair that appears naturally as you peel away its outside layers, one layer at a time.

Resins added during the original paper production process add strength and the ability to remember forms, and the pleats themselves give the chair elasticity and a springy resilience, for an overall effect that looks almost rough, but gives the user a soft, comfortable seating experience.

Our new neutral grey shades reflect the spirit of a story that comes from our instinctive need to relax. Therefore, the finishes and colours of our flooring have been developed to underline our quest to be ourselves, with adaptable, smooth surfaces where both mind and soul can rest in a timeless environment. This has led to the creation of three floors in a range of grey tones. From smoky grey and sand grey to a clear, sophisticated grey tone, we offer oak planks whose expressive structure is softened in an elegant way and shimmers through subtly. They form the calm basis for a tone-on-tone furnishing style in combination with cosmetic trend colours. Hardwood floors that are restrained, look natural and exude calm; the kind of calm that you need to recover from a demanding day.

ESSENTIAL ESSENTIAL In a world in which fashions change fast, the consumer feels a Deep desire to go back to the simple and essential. Looking back at our roots as humans, as well as history and our many forgotten crafts, with this trend we dig into the archives of mankind and place emphasis on the fact that new is not always better. We increasingly long for a simpler and more primal way of life. If we had to describe this trend with a few key words, we would focus on: history, nature, handicraft, back to basics, authenticity, less is more. The materials that best reflect this trend are leather, felt, wool, fur, pumice, stone and wood. Rebellion against the omnipresent technology of our time can be seen in this approach, where ancient craft techniques are paired with new design aesthetics. A shift towards handmade products that are designed to be long-lasting, enduring and sustainable, can be observed. It’s about consuming less, but in a more meaningful way.

The adaptation to a viewpoint where our history meets our future can be seen in a shift towards a back to basics state of mind – a thoughtful, conscious, observant lifestyle that is built to be suitable for the present. Touches of green, blue and ochre are added to suggest the aesthetics of the present and the future.

This idea of embracing our roots can be traced to wabi-sabi, the Japanese art of finding beauty in the imperfection and profundity of nature. It is simple, slow and uncluttered.

5 | www.brunotarsia.com 6 | Bowl Atelier1250

In addition to wabi-sabi, the old Japanese mending practice of kintsugi has been adapted into product development. Kintsugi is the art of fixing broken objects by filling them with gold, as it is believed that if something has suffered damage then it has a great history, which makes it even more beautiful. The materials look raw and unprocessed. The ‘distressed’ surfaces are a part of a much-needed sensory experience.

At BOEN, we’ve incorporated this trend into our hardwood flooring development process and have created a strong collection full of character. The surfaces, which look untreated, play with the originality of wood, which is why the imperfections and defective spots in the structure are smoothed with black filler. These floors form a wonderful basis for the trend of surrounding yourself with sustainable objects and materials within your own four walls – relaxed, imperfect, contemporary. Oak planks with cracks and large knots fit in with this. Wood that may previously have appeared unsuitable for a hardwood floor is turned into a true statement floor thanks to elaborate processes. We focus on craftsmanship and tradition. We plane and smooth and fill cracks and knots with care and passion. This creates exceptional, individual hardwood floors that, with their deep-seated cracks and sublime knots, deeply brushed surfaces and simple but beautiful appearance, are transformed into a true haptic and visual experience within the room.

DENIM FLUX

2

DENIM FLUX If you are fascinated by the world of colour, you might have observed how denim itself and especially the colours of denim have started to pop up not only in fashion but also interiors. Denim has taken over high fashion and street styles over the past decade. The idea of using denim in interiors is not new, but it has been making its way into the interior design world more and more. This represents the evolution of a fabric that was previously considered to be a material mainly for work clothes. Originally a very strong, resilient cotton fabric, it is now available in many different strengths, colours, and combinations of fabric that imitate the look of denim, rather than 100% cotton. We saw clear confirmation of this trend earlier this year in an announcement by paint company Akzo Nobel, during the launch of their annual trend forecast: their colour of the year is ‘Denim Drift’ – a greyish-blue that is the foundation for an inspirational palette of blue paint colours centred on the expected global social and design trends for 2017.

1

TREND GUIDE

HOW CAN YOU IMPLEMENT THIS TREND?

4

‘Denim Drift’ is a timeless, versatile blue that has a differing appearance depending on the colours that you combine it with. Combined with a few of the lighter shades, it has a fresh and soothing feeling, whereas combined with the darker colours it becomes more striking and powerful. The colour can be used to create big effects simply by applying different shades of blue in an effective way, for example by painting not only walls, but also the ceiling.

Blue is an essential colour in our everyday lives – from the clear blue sky to the clothes in our wardrobe. Blue shades and blue colour palettes can contribute to the identities of communities, as everyone all over the world is able to have these soothing colours on their walls, as well as in their wardrobes.

6 | www.anthropologie.com 7 | Design: Paola Navone

6

The overall mood depends very much on the colours that you combine it with, which makes it very flexible with three of our four different interior design styles. The interesting point is that we are not talking about one specific shade of denim, since the fabric has undergone several treatments, allowing for a wide range of nuances.

Pure Nordic minimalist style recommends itself to a combination of cold, almost crystalline blue tones and Live Pure Ash white or Oak Andante white. In Urban Contrast, you will find denim upholstered furniture – a very authentic, naturally vintage look. The matching parquet floors are: Oak Mystic Jungle, Oak Sandy Grey, or for a stronger colour contrast the new Oak Ebony and Oak Chalk Black matching shades. This trend is equally at home with Classic Elegance. Imagine a grey-blue denim tone for your walls, or the upholstery on your furniture? Wonderful with the warm Oak Sand parquet floor!

TREND MATCHING FLOORS We recommend combining a crisp blue shade with Oak white, giving a more minimalist feel. This trend invites you to have pieces of denim-upholstered furniture in your home, with a ripped, distressed, worn look. A matching floor is our Oak Mystic Jungle or Oak Sandy Grey.

TONE-ON-TONE 1 | www.muuto.com

TONE-ON-TONE Tone-on-tone colour styling is a very up-to-date trend in interior design that can be seen everywhere at the moment. It works with one main colour and then adds similar hues from the same colour family to match the chosen palette. You can apply a certain tone of paint to your walls and complement it with pieces of furniture, textiles and interior accessories within the same colour palette. The trick is to stay within just one hue and tell the colour story with the least possible contrast; this unity of colours represents a satisfying balance. Any colour can be used to work with tone-on-tone palettes. In our Trendguide 2017 we are going to display a few colour palettes that go beyond the usual common white or grey styles. We’d like to give you some extra inspiration.

MYSTIC BLUES

COSMETIC COLOURS Originally considered a more feminine style, this has been very popular over the past few years. In addition to pastel tones like blush, slightly moody hues have been added to the cosmetic palette, and dusky pink and dusty rose have appeared on the scene to create a more sophisticated look. Pale pink and nude shades have been evolving, so today you have a wider choice of colours, all gathered under the cosmetic colour scheme umbrella. Colours range from blush, nude and copper tones to more earthy hues, depending on the atmosphere that you would like to achieve. However, we are also seeing new aubergine tones pop up with a much moodier look and feel – still in the pink palette, but with a very different atmosphere.

TRENDING GREENS

According to countless statistics, blue is just ahead of green as the most popular colour! One of the smartest tricks in this area is blending your furniture into your walls. The paint market has grown a lot and offers all kinds of trending colours today. Paint companies even set trends for the entire interior design industry and many of us follow their recommendations. Sometimes colours are used to underline the meaning of certain products, especially when greens are used to represent nature. Monochrome interiors are constructed with a repetition of colour, contrasting textures, a lot of layering, very clever interplay of light and shadow and an unexpected selection of props taken out of their usual context. With these arrangements, no one thing stands out, but the whole image becomes a statement piece.

TREND MATCHING FLOORS When it comes to finding matching hardwood floors for the tone-on-tone trend, anything is possible. With a broad colour palette of white, grey, blue and black hardwood floors, the colour of the floor can match the furnishing style as a whole or can form a slight contrast to your style’s colour concept.

We know that green walls are currently very popular. This high level of popularity can not only be observed in the numerous releases of green styles, but also in the surprisingly high number of images being shared on the Internet. Images of green interiors have been repinned on Pinterest thousands of times, and this clearly says something about how popular this paint colour is. Everything surrounding the green movement in the interior design world started three to four years ago, and more and more people are painting their walls in different shades of the colour.

Clean lines in light, airy rooms. The look is simple, elegant and natural. No unnecessary detail or ornaments, no unruly quirks or strong colours. The rooms provide peace and quiet. This style is inspired by the Nordic summer light and proximity to nature. It brings lightness and radiance to a long, dark winter, and the senses are filled with quality and harmony.

These new interior trends can certainly give your home a new look, and choosing one of our trendy hardwood floorings really makes a difference. To help you find your perfect flooring, we have developed four major style groups. They are all lasting styles with clear historical origins, and they will be relevant for many years to come – and always open to integrating new trends ‌

MODERN RUSTIC Welcome back to the authentic and the real! This style takes us back to country life in the good old days, while retaining a modern look. The materials are rough and natural: rustic woodwork, linen, cotton and rattan together with modern, more masculine elements. But the main look is feminine, warm and summer-light.

CLASSIC ELEGANCE You can sense the historic roar of the ancient Romans and Greeks. The style is refined, symmetrical and elegant, but with a modern touch that allows for creative breaks and unexpected detail. Order, beauty and classic lines set the scene.

URBAN CONTRAST

PURE NORDIC

YOUR STYLE. YOUR FLOOR.

Break the rules! Mix and match! The interior is full of contrasts, but a cosy warmth remains the constant backdrop to whimsical ideas. Earthy and playful, functional and creative. The designers have been inspired by the past but have broken all the established rules and have played with shapes, colours and graphic patterns.

LIVE NATURAL OIL

LIVE PURE

Live Natural is a natural surface treatment containing oils such as sunflower, thistle and soya bean oil as well as naturally occurring waxes (carnauba, candelilla). Deep penetration of the oil into the wood is ensured by two-time application on a custom-made production line. The wood pores are saturated, and drying takes place completely naturally in the open air during a process known as the Air-Plus Process. The floor is ready to use right after installation and has extremely good protective properties against liquids compared to competitors’ products.

Live Pure is the new innovative product development from BOEN: oak planks with Live Pure surface treatment have a very natural look with an ultra-matt finish and excellent protective properties. Live Pure protects the floor from dust, dirt and liquids, thanks to a special treatment applied to the surface which leaves the look of the hardwood floor smooth, clear and naturally light – almost like untreated wood.
