Solveig’s diminutive backyard provides a taste of privacy. She has constructed her own trellises, arbours, and raised beds. Vegetables, mixed with perennials provide centre stage. It is evident that Solveig uses her garden to sooth the soul. You will have reason to tarry. You may wish to visit this garden near lunch time. The town gazebo by the Trent River could provide a great place to relax and eat. There are also great restaurants nearby. (See ads in the passport).

This is the former parsonage for the Methodist and United Church from 1885 – 1998. Much of the Lord’s work has gone on here and we certainly have been on our knees with this project. You’re welcome to view our progress and catch a glimpse of what’s to come on our hillside. Suggestions and volunteers are always appreciated. Sadie, our Cairn terrier, is giving escorted tours. Please feel free to return in two to four years to see our sanctuary at its best. Parking is available at the Civic Centre (one half block north of our house) and at Hastings Public School.

Pat & Bryan Greenhalgh, 116 Centennial Lane, Trent River
My love of gardening came from Grandmother and Mother. The fish pond, many over the years, has been my own interest. We bought these 2.5 acres, about 5 years ago. It is a work in progress and I am not done yet. Living right on the Trent River, I find this a peaceful and relaxing yard. I am still working on my gardens and probably will never really finish them. Often you would find me sitting by the pond with a cup of tea, watching the Kio swim and listening to the waterfall. Please take few moments to relax and enjoy our home.

Frank & Leslie Turpin, 494 S. Belmont 7th Line, Havelock The abundance of rocks and mature trees and insufficient water supply necessitated a new approach to my traditional idea of a garden. A curiosity of why the trains were still active in Havelock led to a solution - a garden railroad! Enjoy our “Woodland Garden” train as it picks up nepheline syenite from the mine, passes through a tunnel, past a farm and continues to the freight station to fill up with water. The garden is set in a natural woodland setting with the garden area floor left covered in moss. Trilliums, violets and the columbine are left to mingle with the hostas, coral bells and sedum. Watch for Jigger and Rufus, our two dragons, residing in the front garden.

Welcome to a garden belonging to someone who is part gardener but most part self-proclaimed “junker”! I love playing with, and in, my garden, but I also love searching out and repurposing objects to use in it – be it as planters or basically items of whimsy. This year I extended my love of being outdoors in the garden by creating a garden shed/retreat from a free standing garage in our back yard. I also went on to transform our attached garage into an outdoor dining room. Both these projects have given me another reason to enjoy my passion for collecting and repurposing (as if I needed a reason or excuse!)

This home was built by Marg’s father in the 1930’s. Facing the garden in the back is a lovely sun room, and to the north is a carport, work shed and a new potting shed. Here is a garden with a rhapsody of colourful blooms. The varieties of perennials, shrubs and mature trees certainly pique your curiosity. Many crafted garden ornaments pull the garden together into a harmonious sanctuary. Don’t miss Doug’s vegetable garden. It is small, but most productive. The layout of garden and buildings allow many houseplants to enjoy the summer outdoors. Welcome to the Dooher’s garden haven.
