National Park & Recreation Month
SPRING/SUMMER 2019
FROM THE DIRECTOR We are excited to launch our Spring/ Summer 2019 Schertz Parks & Recreation FUN Guide highlighting all of the exciting events and amazing recreational opportunities we have here in Schertz. Get fit and get moving, and join us for our 2nd Annual Movin’ on Main – an open streets event - on Sunday, April 7. Then jump into our Underwater Egg Hunt at the Schertz Aquatics Center on April 12 and swim with thousands of plastic eggs! Don’t forget to get out and explore all of our park properties highlighted on pages 18 - 21. Each location has different amenities, including two outdoor pools - and there is something for everyone! New this year are two adult recreation leagues – dodgeball and kickball – so gather your friends and get your team signed up. Finally, July is National Park & Recreation Month, and this year’s theme is “Game On!” celebrating everything that makes our field fun, joyful, and full of excitement! Join us every Friday in July as we celebrate. We’re hosting a Family Fun Game Day at Pickrell Park Pool on July 5, a Teen Night on July 12, a Float & Flick at Pickrell Park Pool on July 19, and a Music in the Park event on July 26 at Rhine Valley Park. Be sure to follow Schertz Parks and Recreation on social media for more details about our month-long celebration. We hope you have FUN exploring everything your Schertz Parks & Recreation Department has to offer! Lauren Shrum, Director of Schertz Parks & Recreation (210) 619-1850

SPECIAL EVENTS
ENTERTAINMENT
AT A PARK NEAR YOU
The City of Schertz has a history of hosting community events that makes everyone feel welcome. From the variety of events held in the Music & Movies in the Park series to the annual 4th of July Jubilee, residents and visitors have many opportunities throughout the year to enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere with some great entertainment. This is just a sample of the wonderful events and programs the City of Schertz offers.
MUSIC & MOVIES IN THE PARK
Schertz Parks & Recreation is excited for another great year of movies and concerts in the park. Families and friends are invited out to one – or all – of this year’s events for a day of fun with the whole family. The Music and Movies in the Park series was established by the Schertz Parks and Recreation department back in 2016 as an initiative to get the community to come out and enjoy their local parks. Each year the schedule includes six featured movies and two live music events at different area parks. All events in the series will be hosted on Friday nights to better accommodate those busy Saturday schedules.
MOVIN ON MAIN
This active event is intended to get folks out biking, running, or strolling through the city streets as a pedestrian of their own local thoroughfare. In partnership with the Schertz Family YMCA, Movin on Main invites you and your families to bring your bicycle, skateboard, stroller, and tennis shoes for an afternoon full of fitness demos, exercise stations, cycling, live music, health & wellness vendors, food & refreshments, and much more!
JUBILEE
Schertz is proud to host the annual 4th of July Jubilee, one of South Texas' largest tributes to freedom and the men & women who serve in the armed forces. Complete with live music, a downtown parade, 'Let Freedom Run' 5K, carnival, hand-made crafts, and festival food, Jubilee offers something for the whole family. And what would the Fourth of July be without the rockets red glare? Schertz is home to the only annual Star Spangled Spectacular firework show- the perfect way to end a celebration!

NATURE EDUCATION
WHY NATURE EDUCATION? Research shows that children are spending hours on electronic devices and less and less time outdoors, with detrimental effects to their health. Getting kids outdoors and learning about the natural world has been shown to reduce health risks such as obesity, diabetes, asthma, and ADHD, while fostering the next generation of environmental stewards. So get outdoors as a family and explore the natural world!
GUADALUPE COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS Guadalupe County Master Gardeners is a voluntary service organization which supports the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service by providing horticultural education to increase the public’s knowledge of gardening. A dedicated group of Master Gardener volunteers maintain the flower beds at Gutierrez Xeriscape Park including new bed design and seasonal color replacement. If you’re interested in joining the Master Gardeners and their work at Gutierrez Xeriscape Park, see their website at guadalupecountymastergardeners.org.
FRIENDS OF CRESCENT BEND NATURE PARK The Friends of Crescent Bend Nature Park is a group of volunteers who have a passion for the park and help the Parks & Recreation Department maintain the park through volunteer service hours. The group organizes volunteer clean up days, maintains the bird blinds, documents flora and fauna in the park, and volunteers at various park events throughout the year. If you’re interested in joining the Friends of Crescent Bend Nature Park, see their website at www.friendscbnp.zenfolio.com.

PARK DEVELOPMENT
PARK DEVELOPMENT
The City of Schertz strives to continue developing the areas around the City with more beautiful parks and facilities. With the growth of the City's population, the Parks and Recreation Department has many future projects.
PARK MAINTENANCE PROJECTS The department is working on a long list of maintenance projects keeping in mind that safety is our top priority, and then balancing accessibility, aesthetics, and innovation in our park system. Already completed is new safety surfacing on all of our playscapes across the system. Other projects on the list include repairing the basketball goals and performing cosmetic updates to the restrooms at Pickrell Park, repairing the irrigation pump at the Schertz Soccer Complex, demolishing the asphalt basketball court at Ashley Park and replacing it with a new concrete one, and repairing pool filtration equipment at Wendy Swan Memorial Park.
MARY WHITFIELD BURKS PARK 3175 Schertz Parkway
COMPLETED! The park includes a 220-foot long, 10foot wide spur trail off of Schertz Parkway that meanders through the oak trees and back on to the parkway. Outdoor fitness equipment including a recumbent cycle, cardio walker, chest press, leg extension, high-low chin up bars, balance board, and a captain’s chair have been added along the trail for runners and walkers to expand their workout on their regular exercise route. Also included in the park is an accessible drinking fountain with a pet bowl, bench, trash can, and park signage.

SCHERTZ EXERCISE TRAIL Community Circle Dr.
COMPLETED! The exercise trail behind the city campuses is a 10-foot wide granite trail along Dietz Creek and Community Circle Drive. The trail loops behind the Schertz Ballpark/Johnie McDow Sports Complex and connects to the Schertz Parkway sidewalks. The original trail route had to be revised due to changes in surrounding development, but the current route is already well used by walkers and joggers and students going to and from Clemens High School.

SCHERTZ PEDESTRIAN ROUTES & BIKE LANES PROJECT City-Wide
This exciting project for the Schertz community will install $1.1 million worth of trails, sidewalks and bike lanes throughout Central Schertz. A 10-foot wide granite trail is planned off of Schertz Parkway that meanders through the LCRA easement roughly parallel to Wiederstein Road and connects to the established trail in Forest Ridge Park. The second part of the project includes striping compliant bike lanes (proper width, proper signage and striping) on both sides of Savannah Drive from the Selma/Schertz city limits to FM 3009. Bicycle traffic in this area is heavy due to the elementary and intermediate schools along Savannah Drive. Compliant bike lanes will also be added to Woodland Oaks Drive from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. The third component of the project is to install sidewalks along both sides of Live Oak Road from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. This will complete a much-needed connection for pedestrians between two-highly utilized corridors through the city. The project is nearing the end of design phase with the project scheduled to go out to bid this summer.
