FALL 2021 / WINTER 2022

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Raise your hand if you’re ready for cooler weather – the team at Schertz Parks and Recreation certainly is! Fall means cooler temperatures in Texas, but most of the time the heat persists for a while. Luckily, we have a way to cool off with our annual Dunkin’ for Pumpkins event at the Schertz Aquatics Center on Saturday October 2. Our traditional Trunk or Treat event is still postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in its place this year again is the Candy Cruise scheduled for Saturday October 30. Holidazzle will help us get in the spirit of the holiday season on Saturday December 4 and we can ring in 2022 at our New Year’s Eve Masquerade event at Pickrell Park from 8 p.m. – Midnight. In February we’re still hopeful to have our Daddy/Daughter and Mother/Son Dances – the Dynamic Duos “Do-Over” since we weren’t able to host the event last year due to COVID-19. Participants are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superhero - whether that’s Superman, Wonder Woman, or a Doctor or a Nurse! Tickets will be available at Schertz.com. In trail development, the first section of the Great Northern Trail is nearing completion at Schertz Parkway and Wiederstein Road. Construction of a second section at FM 1103 at Cibolo Valley Baptist Church will also take place this Fall/Winter. We continue to work to identify additional connection opportunities for the city’s trail network. Finally, we've highlighted Volunteer Schertz on page 14 - a new online resource for volunteer opportunities - both at the city and in the community. Go online to check out ways to get involved today! We hope you have FUN with Schertz Parks & Recreation this Fall and Winter! Lauren Shrum, Director of Parks & Recreation

SCHERTZ PARKS

PARKS

Since its beginning in 1958, the City of Schertz has maintained, at the forefront, its desire to focus on the quality of life enjoyed by our residents. Planned parks, natural parks, sports facilities, pavilions and family gathering places, hike and bike trails, safe pedestrians ways, fitness facilities, swimming facilities and social gathering places are all part of a large picture that meets the needs of our community.

ASHLEY PARK

CUT-OFF PARK

This 5-acre neighborhood park is a great place for families to play on the playground, practice soccer, or enjoy a pick-up game of basketball. The park has an expression swing, gaga ball pit, and a lighted ADA accessible walking trail.

MARY WHITFIELD BURKS PARK 3175 Schertz Parkway

This 2-acre park is just off Schertz Parkway and can only be accessed on foot or by bicycle off of the Schertz Parkway trails. The small pocket park has outdoor fitness equipment and a drinking fountain for runners and walkers to get a short workout in along their regular exercise route.

This 1-acre park is all about play with multiple play structures, swings, merry-go-round, and accessible features.  A restroom building makes it a destination park for the community.

PARK DEVELOPMENT

PARK DEVELOPMENT The City of Schertz strives to continue developing the areas around the City with more beautiful parks and facilities. With the growth of the City's population, the Parks & Recreation Department has many future projects.

ASHLEY PARK CONCRETE LOOP TRAIL

COMPLETED! In 2019, city staff completed Phase I of the renovation project at Asley Park which included reconstructing the basketball court, replacing playground equipment, a cosmetic update to the restroom facility, and providing an accessible route to the new features. The existing asphalt loop trail as not replaced at that time due to limited funding. Phase

20

City of Schertz Parks & Recreation

II of the renovation included demolition of the existing failing asphalt trail, and reconstructed a concrete loop trail in its place that is fully ADA accessible, and extends the accessible route to the restroom, the toddler playscape, and to one picnic area. Phase III of the Ashley Park renovation includes an additional playscape feature and a picnic pavilion available for party reservations which is scheduled for construction this Fall/Winter.

FALL 2021 / WINTER 2022

VETERAN’S MEMORIAL PLAZA LANDSCAPE RENOVATION

COMPLETED! New landscaping beds were added in a symmetrical ring around the plaza and feature various types of roses to give the plaza a more formal look. Limestone blocks and earthen berms were used to create an amphitheater-effect two-tier seating area on both sides of the plaza. An accessible sidewalk was constructed from the back of the plaza to the parking area at the Aquatic Center and an accessible parking spot was created adjacent to two Purple Heart Recipient parking spaces. Pavers are now available to purchase online at schertz. com and are installed twice a year in March and September.

HILLTOP/HOMESTEAD PARK CONCEPTUAL PLAN

City staff are working on a new community park in the northern region of Schertz between the Fairhaven and The Links at Scenic Hills neighborhoods and the new Homestead development. The city has owned an undeveloped 8.37-acre parcel known informally as “Hilltop Park” for over a decade. The respective Homeowner’s Associations (HOAs) for the surrounding neighborhoods own 3 contiguous parcels of 8.08 acres, 7.27 acres, and 6.07 acres, and city staff is working with those HOAs to donate the parcels to the project to be used as a match for grant funds for

development of this park. Also included in the project is the approximately 15acre park that is being dedicated to the city with the Homestead development. The new combined community park will have a total of 45 acres and will remain a largely nature-based park. Early conceptual plans call for a hilltop overlook/observation platform, a fishing pond with pier, walking trails, mountain-biking trails, nature-based playscape, picnic pavilions, restrooms, and interpretive signage. The grant will be submitted in October 2021 and notifications of grant awards would be in the Spring 2022. If awarded the grant, construction could start in Fall 2022 or early 2023.

CRESCENT BEND NATURE PARK IMPROVEMENTS

PROPOSAL TO CONVERT WENDY SWAN MEMORIAL PARK POOL TO SPLASHPAD City staff are exploring options to convert the existing residential-sized pool at Wendy Swan Memorial Park to a small splash pad feature. A longer operating season is possible with a splash pad (March – October) versus the traditional summer season (Memorial Day – August.) The cost savings from staffing the pool would be used to pay back the reserves for the construction of the splash pad and the existing pool filtration systems can be utilized for the splash pad, resulting in further savings. Design options are still being considered but construction could happen over the winter to coincide with a spring opening. Questions can be emailed to parksandrec@schertz.com.

PARK DEVELOPMENT

New water lines and well spigots were recently installed to connect each bird blind to the existing water line. These improvements will save time and effort for our volunteers who were previously using garden hoses to fill up water tanks at bird blind sites to maintain water drips for the birds. A new automatic entry gate will be installed at Crescent Bend Nature Park this fall so that the park will be consistently opened and closed based on a timer. Additionally, the aging post & cable vehicle barriers at the entry to the park will be replaced with limestone blocks to step up the first impression as visitors drive into this gem of a nature park!

TRAIL DEVELOPMENT

TRAIL DEVELOPMENT City staff is working on expanding the trail network in Schertz and with that comes the development of a trail branding program. The Schertz Trails logo, trail mile-marker signage, and trail maps will all be developed as we add more trail networks to the system. Longrange plans include the Cibolo Creek Trail, Dry Comal Creek Trail, and the Woman Hollering Creek Trail. Stay tuned to Schertz.com for more information on these exciting projects.

SCHERTZ PEDESTRIAN ROUTES & BIKE LANES PROJECT, CITY-WIDE

This exciting project for the Schertz community will install $1.1 million worth of trails, sidewalks, and bike lanes throughout Central Schertz. This project was also made possible due to applying for a federal fund match (80% federal/20% local) through the Transportation Alternatives Program. A 10-foot wide decomposed granite trail is planned off of Schertz Parkway that meanders through the LCRA easement roughly parallel to Wiederstein Road and connects to the established trail in Forest Ridge Park. The second part of the project includes striping compliant bike lanes (proper width, proper signage and striping) on both sides of Savannah Drive from the Selma/Schertz city limits to FM 3009. Bicycle traffic in this area is heavy due to the elementary and intermediate schools along Savannah Drive. Compliant bike lanes will also be added to Woodland Oaks Drive from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. The third component of the project is to install sidewalks along both sides of Live Oak Road from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. This will complete a much-needed connection for pedestrians between two highly utilized corridors throughout the city. Construction kicked off in March 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in November 2021.

Imagine being able to bike or hike along Cibolo Creek from IH-35 North all the way to I-10 South – what an adventure! This is the ambitious goal for the Cibolo Creek Trail that will one day connect two of the biggest parks and green spaces in the Schertz park system: the Pickrell Park – Thulemeyer Park - Cut-Off Park complex north of FM 78 with the 180-acre Crescent Bend Nature Park south of FM 78. Additionally, there are opportunities to connect with other neighboring cities’ parks along the way creating a regional recreational asset that will serve this area for generations.

SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY

FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR

It’s cozy up with a book time! Reading is fun any time of the year, but there’s something special about reading under a blanket, hot beverage at hand, during the fall and winter months. This fall is special for another reason. We’ve offered virtual programming throughout the pandemic, but we are very excited to re-introduce in-person programs beginning in October. In addition to in-person programs and services, we offer extensive online services, digital reading materials, and e-resources. Our Winter Reading Challenge, Book Nerd Challenge and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten programs can be done remotely as well as in-person. We continue to offer curbside pick-up of materials, too. Visit schertzlibrary.org for information on the many resources available to you with your library card and for an online calendar of events. Have questions? You can contact the library at (210) 6191700 or at librarian@schertz.com. We look forward to seeing you soon! Melissa Uhlhorn, Library Director

How to Get a Library Card

Any Texas resident with a photo ID and current proof of residence (i.e. a utility bill) may apply for a full-service card, free of charge. If your proof of residence is different from your photo ID, your name must appear on the proof of residence to be valid. P.O. boxes are not acceptable as proof of residence. Children under 18 may apply for a card as long as they can write their name and a parent with a photo ID and proof of residence is present to sign the card. The library also has digital access cards and TexShare cards. Visit the “How Do I...” tab at schertzlibrary.org to learn about the various cards available.

OUTDOOR QIGONG CLASS AT THE LIBRARY

Join us for our brand new exercise program for adults 18+ provided by local certified instructor, Jennifer Eash. What is Qigong? Pronounced "chee gong," it is an ancient Chinese practice inspired by nature. Qigong means "energy skill" or "energy work" and is an extremely diverse practice that helps you develop skills in working with your own energy, expanding your self-awareness of your connection to yourself, other people, and the world around you. We will be using gentle, guided, standing practices, combining breath with movement, to remove old energy and bring in fresh energy, supporting you in developing more strength, resilience, agility, and focus. No additional equipment is required. Join us in the library courtyard Monday, October 18, and Monday, November 15 from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m.
