PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD The Parks & Recreation Advisory Board exists to advise and make recommendations to the City Council concerning policy matters related to the establishment, maintenance and operation of the City’s parks and recreation programs. The Spring of 2020 has certainly turned out differently than we had originally planned and I’m sure differently than any of us could have imagined. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I think the value of parks and open space has been apparent for the many citizens who have been out and about in the parks over the last 2 months, exercising on the trails and getting some fresh air. While our restrooms, playgrounds, and water fountains have been closed out of an abundance of caution, we are glad that we have been able to keep the parks open throughout this time as well as serve lunches to our seniors through a curbside service at the Schertz Area Senior Center. THANK YOU to our ESSENTIAL park maintenance staff who have been working hard to keep the grass mowed and trails maintained. While we are working on re-opening city services we appreciate everyone being flexible at this time and encourage residents to visit Schertz.com to get the latest updates on any program changes. We here at Schertz Parks & Recreation hope we can still provide some FUN activities this summer while operating in our “new normal.” Programs with small groups and in outdoor spaces will resume operations in June. Larger special events will be modified and celebrated in a different way for now. Pools will re-open according to CDC guidelines as soon as our YMCA partners can hire and train staff to do so safely. BIRDING WALKS
Join us for a birding walk at Crescent Bend Nature Park. All levels of birders are welcome-from beginners to experts. FRIENDS OF CRESCENT BEND NATURE PARK

SELF-GUIDED INTERPRETIVE TRAIL
To help celebrate Crescent Bend Nature Park’s 10 Year Anniversary in September 2019, new interpretive signage was installed along the main loop trail at Crescent Bend Nature Park. The full-color signage features beautiful photography donated by long-time park volunteer and Friends of Crescent Bend member, Ann Mallard. Fun and interesting facts about the park’s history, and known recorded flora and fauna are included – 30+ species of trees, 35+ species of wildflowers, 250+ species of birds, 40+ species of butterflies, 10+ species of mammals, 7+ species of snakes. NATURE EDUCATION
The Guadalupe Master Naturalists welcome Schertz residents to apply for the 2020 training class to begin in mid-August for the Texas Master Naturalist certification. The class size is limited. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department jointly sponsor the program. Applications are available online at tx.mn.org/guadalupe. To request by mail, call Schertz Parks & Recreation at (210) 6191850. The class will run from Tuesday, August 11 through Saturday, November 21, and will be held every other Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Schertz Area Senior Center, 608 Schertz Parkway. Training includes class time, Saturday field trips, and independent outdoor activities. Training topics include eco-regions of Texas, water resources, wildlife, geology, citizen science, and rangeland management. The cost of the class is $110 and the deadline to apply is August 1. The Master Naturalist group provides many volunteer hours to Crescent Bend Nature Park and we encourage interested residents to apply for this valuable training.
The Friends of Crescent Bend Nature Park is a group of volunteers who have a passion for the park and help the Parks & Recreation Department maintain the park through volunteer service hours. The group organizes volunteer clean up days, maintains the bird blinds, documents flora and fauna in the park, and volunteers at various park events throughout the year. SPECIAL EVENTS SOCIAL DISTANCING AT MUSIC AND MOVIES IN THE PARK
Join us for our rescheduled Music and Movies in the Park Series and enjoy an evening in the park with your family. We will be practicing social distancing at these events and we encourage all participants to follow CDC guidelines when attending. Cough or sneeze into your elbow, wash your hands, and consider wearing masks. Areas will be marked on the grass every 6 feet to allow attendees to have their space in the viewing area. Concession and food truck lines will be socially distanced and restrooms will have extra cleaning cycles. Families are also welcome to pack their own picnics along with blankets and camp chairs. Float and Flicks may be re-located to another area in the park; stay tuned to Schertz.com and Schertz Parks & Recreation on Facebook for the latest updates.

A Family Who Swims Together, Stays Together Adult supervision of children is important as it allows our lifeguards and aquatic safety staff to focus on the water and keeping everyone safe. All youth ages 16 and under must complete a new swim test each visit prior to entering the water. Each youth will receive a wristband that will allow him or her access to certain areas of the pool. • Children 6 & under must be within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian at all times • Children 7-16 are required to take a swim test once a year • Children 13 & up are allowed access to the pools without a guardian • Any children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older

Since its beginning in 1958, the City of Schertz has maintained, at the forefront, its desire to focus on the quality of life enjoyed by our residents. Planned parks, natural parks, sports facilities, pavilions and family gathering places, hike and bike trails, safe pedestrians ways, fitness facilities, swimming facilities and social gathering places are all part of a large picture that meets the needs of our community.

CUT-OFF PARK
This 5-acre neighborhood park is a great place for families to play on the playground, practice soccer, or enjoy a pick-up game of basketball. The park has a renovated restroom, expression swing, gaga ball pit, and a lighted walking trail.
This 58-acre park features lots of open space, heritage-sized oak trees, and trailhead access to six miles of Cibolo Creek Primitive Trails.

HERITAGE OAKS PARK
This 2-acre park features multiple garden areas beautifully maintained by the Guadalupe Master Gardeners volunteer group. The gazebo area is perfect for photo opportunities, and a shaded and lighted walking trail encircles the park.
This 13-acre park is a truly unique site, with hundreds of heritage-sized oak and cedar elm trees. This park offers a tranquil walking path through the woods, picnic facilities, a new playscape and swing set, and a picturesque pond.

This 17-acre park offers something for everyone. From basketball to swimming - to playscapes to walking trail - we’ve fit it all in - in this busy community park. The park is also home to many city events and festivals throughout the year.

This 10-acre neighborhood park features a playscape, walking trail, and lots of open space for families to toss a football around or play a game of Frisbee.

This 0.34-acre neighborhood pocket park used to be home to a majestic lone oak right in the center of the park. While the lone oak is gone, the name remains the same and several other large oaks shade some benches in this small tranquil spot.
FOREST RIDGE PARK 17529 Wiederstein Rd
This 14-acre park features an almost hidden trail through a linear forested area that many walkers and runners utilize. The trail connects to the FM 3009 sidewalks and will have a future connection to the Schertz Parkway Trails. The park also features open space where pop-up soccer practices often take place.
MARY WHITFIELD BURKS PARK 3175 Schertz Parkway
This 2-acre park is just off Schertz Parkway and can only be accessed on foot or by bicycle off of the Schertz Parkway trails. The small pocket park has outdoor fitness equipment and a drinking fountain for runners and walkers to get a short workout in along their regular exercise route.

This 180-acre park is a nature lover’s paradise. Miles of trail, blooming wildflowers, and picnic facilities are just some of what make this park special. Check out the two bird blinds in the park where rare bird species have been spotted or head down to the Cibolo Creek for some fishing.
This 1-acre park is all about play with multiple play structures, swings, merry go round, and accessible features. A new restroom building makes it a destination park for the community.

This 2.5-acre neighborhood pocket park has numerous oak trees that provide a shaded canopy for the walking trail that meanders through the park. The walking trail connects to the FM 3009 sidewalks.
This small 2-acre pocket park borders Cibolo Creek and is mostly open space. The park is being developed by Eagle Scouts into a Scout Day Use Area with picnic facilities.
This 5-acre neighborhood park offers a picnic pavilion, playscape, walking trail, sport court and soccer fields. It’s the perfect spot for the family to play a pick-up game on the court or bring a picnic lunch to enjoy.
This 0.60-acre park is not only for the dogs, but for the owners too. Benches allow the people to socialize while the dogs socialize too. Multiple fountains and small dog areas make the space multifunctional for pet owners.

PARK DEVELOPMENT The City of Schertz strives to continue developing the areas around the City with more beautiful parks and facilities. With the growth of the City's population, the Parks & Recreation Department has many future projects.
VETERAN’S MEMORIAL PLAZA PAVER RENOVATION 512 Schertz Parkway
HERITAGE OAKS PARK 11700 Longleaf Parkway
COMPLETED! The City of Schertz applied for a 100% matching grant through the TRAPS/GameTime/ PlayCore Statewide Funding Initiative and was awarded the grant in May 2019. The total cost of the playground and installation was $76,058.00. The City of Schertz is one of 25 grants awarded throughout the state and our playscape structure was awarded two national demonstration site designations: “NatureGrounds” and the “PlayOn! Promoting Physical Activity.” The playscape was installed in December 2019 and includes several slides, a butterfly climber, interactive and cooperative play panels, swings, and a spinning seat. An accessible trail was also constructed in January 2020 to connect the playscape to the existing parking and picnic areas.

COMPLETED! This project consisted of removing the existing worn pavers, re-installing newly engraved pavers to replace those that were removed, and included installing a new batch of pavers from residents who were on a waiting list. In addition, the granite pedestals have already been reengraved, and landscaping will be refreshed in Phase II to begin in June. Going forward, new brick applications (as well as correction forms) will be collected in 6-month increments with replacements and additions taking place in February and August of each year. New applications will be accepted online on our new registration software, CivicRec, and payments will also be accepted online.

RHINE VALLEY PARK SHADE STRUCTURE ADDITION 9958 Mulhouse Dr
A new shade structure is being constructed over the playscape equipment at Rhine Valley Park. The shade structure is being provided by the neighborhood developer in exchange for a drainage easement across dedicated park property. The value of the shade structure and installation is approximately $30,000. Both the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board and the City Council approved the drainage easement in exchange for the improvements. Construction of the shade structure is expected to occur in May 2020.
SCHERTZ PEDESTRIAN ROUTES & BIKE LANES PROJECT City-wide
This exciting project for the Schertz community will install $1.1 million worth of trails, sidewalks, and bike lanes throughout Central Schertz. This project was also made possible due to applying for a federal fund match (80% federal/20% local) through the Transportation Alternatives Program. A 10-foot wide decomposed granite trail is planned off of Schertz Parkway that meanders through the LCRA easement roughly parallel to Wiederstein Road and connects to the established trail in Forest Ridge Park. The second part of the project includes striping compliant bike lanes (proper width, proper
signage, and striping) on both sides of Savannah Drive from the Selma/ Schertz city limits to FM 3009. Bicycle traffic in this area is heavy due to the elementary and intermediate schools along Savannah Drive. Compliant bike lanes will also be added to Woodland Oaks Drive from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. The third component of the project is to install sidewalks along both sides of Live Oak Road from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. This will complete a much-needed connection for pedestrians between two-highly utilized corridors through the city. The project design is 100% completed and is in the TxDOT review process. The funds are scheduled to let in late summer 2020.
PARK MAINTENANCE PROJECTS
The department is continuing to work on deferred maintenance projects across the parks system, keeping in mind that safety is our top priority, and then balancing accessibility, aesthetics, and innovation in our park system. Projects for the FY 19-20 budget year include working on accessibility issues at Ashley Park and finishing up repainting of all the buildings, fences, and picnic pavilions at Pickrell Park (that began in FY 18-19.) Electrical upgrades, painting, and parking lot improvements will continue at Thulemeyer Park. We will phase in 10 new picnic tables, replace a slide and repaint playground equipment, repair water lines, and make repairs to the pool deck — all at Pickrell Park. The foul posts and shade structure posts at Johnie McDow Sports Complex will be repainted and additional trees will be planted. Work will also begin on a parking plan for overflow parking behind the ballpark.

Bibliotheca’s cloudLibrary is the newest way for library customers to enjoy e-books and e-audiobooks. With a library card and the cloudLibrary app, customers have access to over 150,000 items! The app offers features that make browsing and borrowing super easy. Users can favorite, mark as read, and sort a record of their borrowing history, helping them manage previously and currently borrowed items. Users can also view or cancel holds, renew items, and receive reminders. cloudLibrary offers the convenience of a virtual library card. It can store a digital version of your card on your phone or device. The virtual card can then be used for any library transaction that traditionally requires a physical card, eliminating the frustration of a forgotten or misplaced card. Users can store multiple cards and switch between accounts with ease. The new service is free-of-charge to all Schertz Public Library patrons, requiring only a valid library card. The app is available through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store or by visiting yourcloudlibrary.com. Users will need to follow the prompts and log in using their library card number and PIN.
