Thank you for helping us create community!
You, our donors, are an integral part of all we do at Schlitz Audubon. As you will read in the following pages, our accomplish ments over the past year highlight how together we build a sense of community in our quest to bring the wonder of nature to all.
Against the beautiful backdrop of the Cen ter’s varied habitats, we brought the joy of birding to visitors and community mem bers near and far this year. We increased the scope of spring birding programs, deepening people’s knowledge of the avian world and underscoring the importance of preserving native habitats.
We also celebrated our community of volunteers, many who together devote thousands of hours annually to the Center’s land restoration initiatives. These valuable volunteers include a core group, some who have been volunteering with us for more than two decades, as well as employees from a diverse cross-section of Greater Milwaukee companies.
The addition of Willow, a young, female Saw-whet Owl, enhanced our awe-inspiring raptor pro grams. Since joining us in early 2022, Willow has thrived as a feathered ambassador. She and our 14 other birds of prey help teach our community about their wild counterparts.
This past year we offered more nature-based programs and experiences to people with specific needs, including people with cognitive and physical challenges who are often unable to travel to the Center. With your support, we brought Schlitz Audubon programs to libraries, schools, and com munity centers, providing a comfortable and accessible way for a great many more people to engage with the natural world.
We are happy to share that for the fifth year in a row, we have received four stars from Charity Navi gator, their highest rating. Thank you for entrusting Schlitz Audubon with your support and helping us share the wonders of nature with members of our community.
Shane Delsman Board President Helen Boomsma Executive Director Shane Delsman, Board President, and Helen Boomsma, Executive DirectorCreating Community | Sharing the Joy of Birding
Springmigration is the perfect time to spark the interest of a budding birder. The sweet songs of bright warblers carry down from the highest reaches of the canopy. Spiraling calls of secretive thrushes emit from the understory. Staccato drumming announces the presence of stout woodpeck ers as they search for insects on old-growth trees.
Drawing on this beautiful backdrop, Center educators connected more than 400 people with the joy of birding in spring of 2022, nearly quadrupling the number of spring programs offered in years past. Beginning birding ID workshops gave hobbyists the confidence to begin calling American Robins, American Goldfinches, and Northern Cardinals by name, early morning bird walks led by seasoned birders took visitors on guided searches for likely species, and field trips gave participants the chance to experience some of the best birding hotspots in the region.
To complement this marked increase in programming, the Center also released a field guide and a suite of online offerings last spring. The comprehensive Birds of Schlitz Audubon folding pocket guide, curated by Schlitz Audubon staff, highlights 136 species one is likely to see on the trails at the Center both year-round and during migration. Online, our Bird Profile series highlights a species that is migrating through, breeding, or is a year-round resident of Southeast Wisconsin. Readers can learn about the appearance, diet, and nesting habits of species like Yellow-rumped Warbler and Green Heron, and even where and when they might be sighted at the Center.
Though education is always Schlitz Audubon’s primary focus, one online offering is pure fun: A feeder cam positioned outside the Great Hall of the Visitor Center ensures that any time of day, anyone can watch species like cheerful Black-capped Chickadees, feisty Blue Jays, and even tiny Ruby-throated Hummingbirds pursuing seeds, nuts, and sugar water.
Thanks to the passionate support of our donors, Schlitz Audubon shared the joy of birding with more people than ever last year and created new resources that will serve the community for years to come.
Creating Community | Raptor Ambassadors Building Connections
Schlitz
Audubon’s Raptor Ambassadors have been a source of wonder and inspiration for the community for more than 25 years. The most comprehensive program of its kind in Southeast ern Wisconsin, this premier collection is comprised of raptors: hawks, owls, eagles, and falcons, but also includes other birds such as a Turkey Vulture and an American Crow.
In early 2022, a pint-sized Northern Saw-whet Owl named Willow became part of Schlitz Audubon’s 15-member Animal Ambassador team. Her journey “home” to Schlitz Audubon exemplifies the pow er of community collaboration to benefit wildlife, and to help reinforce lessons about protecting the habitats we all share.
In October 2021, local couple Genie and Tom Smith found Willow lying immobile on the sidewalk near their home. They took her to the Wisconsin Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, where she was diagnosed with a non-reparable wing injury. The Humane Society recommended that Willow join the Raptor Ambassador team at the Center, and the Smiths in turn graciously sponsored her move, making a generous donation to support Willow's feeding, training, housing, and veterinary care at the Center.
Today Willow is thriving as one of our feathered educators, helping teach the public about her wild counterparts, underscoring the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems, and providing an awe-inspiring, up-close look at a live owl. Since she joined us in early 2022, Willow has already par ticipated in 89 programs and met over 5,000 people!
Last year, the raptor team participated in more than 550 programs, reaching more than 59,000 peo ple. From our majestic Bald Eagles holding court at the Wisconsin State Fair, to Tallulah the Turkey Vulture aweing students with her six-foot wingspan, our birds are touching the community almost every day.
We are so thankful for the dedicated efforts of the people who brought Willow to Schlitz Audubon. We are honored to be entrusted to help share her story, and the stories of each of our Raptor Ambas sadors, with the community.
Creating Community | Volunteers Powering Conservation
Habitat
restoration demands hard work and patience, and results are often visible only after years of labor. Thanks to the Center’s conservation staff past and present, and a community of hundreds of volunteers, visitors today can witness dramatic changes across the Center’s 185 acres.
Volunteer land stewards devote thousands of hours each year to restoring the Center’s habitats. A core group, some of whom have been volunteering with us for more than two decades, work four mornings every week, year-round. In warmer months, their efforts are complemented by students or corporate work groups. This year, we were fortunate to host over 215 employees from corporations like Ever-Green Energy, Johnson Controls, and Kohl’s to assist with habitat restoration.
The Center’s Lake Terrace is a notable example of how our dedicated community of land stewards powers ongoing habitat transformation. Ten years ago, these flat meadowlands adjacent to Lake Michigan were dominated by white blossoms of non-native garlic mustard in May, followed by a wash of lavender dame’s rocket flowers in June. Now, spring ephemerals like Virginia waterleaf and bloodroot greet hikers early in the growing season, and the terrace is resplendent with plants like bergamot, joe pye weed, and flowering hyssop by late summer.
Beginning in 2014, land stewards began devoting hundreds of hours during June and July to battling invasive species on the 13-acre terrace. Center staff would run brush cutters eight hours a day in highly infested areas, and volunteers would hand pull invasives in high-quality pockets. This process was repeated for several years, until dominant invasives began to give way to reestablishing native species.
Today, invasive plants are hand-pulled by volunteers to protect the emergence of natives, a task that will need to be completed every spring. Yet work on the terrace no longer requires the enormous hours of years past, and volunteers are thus able to begin the slow, patient process of restoring new habitats.
Thank you to our community of hard-working volunteers who donated nearly 4,500 hours of their time to support conservation at Schlitz Audubon last year! This important work will have a lasting impact for many seasons to come.
Creating Community | Programming for All People
vital part of Schlitz Audubon’s mission is to provide inspiring environmental education for all people, a tenet that we take very seriously. This year, thanks to the support of our donor community, we increased our free and reduced cost off-site programming to reach 1,100 people with specific needs across Southeastern Wisconsin.
Schlitz Audubon’s accessible programming supports individuals of all ages who have visual, cogni tive, auditory, and mobility needs by providing them with a comfortable setting to engage with the natural world. Programs are hands-on, sensory learning experiences that explore an environmental theme. Non-sighted people who rely on audio communication are treated to the melodies of spring birdsong through a Joy of Birding program, while a group of highly sensory individuals may feel a riot of natural textures through Reptiles & Amphibians.
We work with caregivers prior to every program to learn the unique needs of the group, and then tailor the program to meet those needs.
Last year, for the first time, more than half of the Center’s accessible program offerings occurred off-site. Care facilities often lack high-capacity, safe transport vehicles or may require a high number of caregivers to facilitate travel to the Center for program participants. Thanks to generous donor support, we were instead able to bring environmental education to 21 partners in the community, strengthening relationships with organizations like St. Ann’s Center for Intergenerational Care, Balance Inc., and Village Pointe Commons.
We value sharing our programming in ways that meet the needs of specific community groups. We are so thankful for the partnership of the many organizations that allow us to conduct programming in their facilities, and the generous donors who make these programs possible.

We invite you to consider becoming part of the Evergreen Society, a small group of visionary benefactors who cherish nature
and who have included Schlitz Audubon in their
plans. The Evergreen Society recognizes and honors donors who will help advance the mission of Schlitz Audubon though their estate plans.
Planned gifts can be made through bequests, retirement plans, charitable remainder trusts, life insurance pol icies, or appreciated assets. Even if you feel you only have modest means to share, you can still include Schlitz Audubon in your will—you need only believe in our mission. Together, we will decide which aspect of the Center means the most to you, and we will ensure that this area will benefit from your interest. This may include our land conservation efforts, our award-winning preschool, our celebrated Raptor and Animal Ambassador Pro gram, or our nature-based educational programs with offerings for all ages and abilities.
