SCHLOSS FEST SPIELE MAY 5– JULY 16 2022

LUDWIGS BURG FESTIVAL

To our Festival guests, Since 2020, the Ludwigsburg Festival has been transforming into a Festival for the Arts, Democracy and Sustainability. We are motivated by great existential questions which are manifested throughout our programme. Together with you, we would like to create rituals of reflection, mourning and consolation, joy and hope. In listening to one another, we can find ourselves but also togetherness. In the Festival Season ahead of us we will celebrate the tenth decade of the Ludwigsburg Festival. Ten highlights are already going on sale before the whole season is presented in spring 2022: the great sacred works by Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, the legendary »Sacre« by Pina Bausch, the choreographic opera »Dido and Aeneas« by Sasha Waltz, a world premiere by Lucinda Childs from New York and the popular »Monrepos Open Air« with the Festival Orchestra conducted by Alondra de la Parra. After such a long time apart, we have every reason to celebrate our community again. Hopefully in person, – and if not for sure digitally! In the name of the whole team, a very warm welcome! Yours, Jochen Sandig Artistic Director

The unusual instrumentation of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Triple Concerto was unique in its time and stood out from his oeuvre. It focuses on a trio that varies between virtuosity and harmony with the finesse of chamber music. For this special dynamic, the Basel Chamber Orchestra and its director Giovanni Antonini have assembled international stars: Isabelle Faust, Sol Gabetta and Kristian Bezuidenhout. This exuberant work is followed by Symphony no. 5 in C minor, which Beethoven composed around the same time. Enthusiastic about the ideals of the French Revolution, he imbues his composition with calls for freedom, equality and brotherhood. Originally planned for 2020, this inspiring concert programme will now at last take place. After the opening concert on 5 May with the Festival Orchestra, it will usher in the 2022 season.

»Les Adieux« brings us a musical lamento for our declining planet. If humans continue to destroy the planet, it is time to say goodbye to the magnificent and sonorous flora and fauna that were the violinist’s first music teachers. Our hopes lie with the Paris Climate Agreement and the Agenda 2030. Kopatchinskaja interweaves Beethoven’s »Pastorale« with movements from Shostakovich’s Second Violin Concerto, Robert Schumann’s Violin Concerto and his »Ghost Variations«. In a subtle interplay with stage design and video projections, a sword of Damocles, portending imminent farewells.

Sasha Waltz’s enchanting choreographic opera »Dido and Aeneas« begins with »a jump into the deep end«. Henry Purcell's opera, on which it based, condenses the heroic epic into a few plot elements: The gods accuse the Carthaginian queen and the Trojan prince of neglecting their duties, and sabotage their love. Recently united, they have to part once more, and a human tragedy takes its course. When Aeneas leaves Dido, she breathes out her life and love in her lament. In the opulent production by Sasha Waltz & Guests with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Vocalconsort Berlin, dance and opera merge into a single art form.

If the B minor Mass had remained a Kyrie-Gloria Mass, its genesis would be told quickly. But it was to be a further 16 years before Johann Sebastian Bach signed his last major vocal work with the words »Fine. DSGL«. Deo Soli Gloria – to the glory of God alone. Bach struggled with its completion until the very end; perhaps that shows the degree of his aspiration to perfection for the combination of his Christian and artistic credos. Ceremoniously, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin under the direction of René Jacobs bring to Ludwigsburg the very project with which their abiding collaboration began 30 years ago. Chœur de Chambre de Namur Cappella Mediterranea Leonardo García Alarcón Conductor Leonardo García Alarcón is a master of rediscovery: »Il diluvio universale« had been forgotten for over three centuries before the conductor brought it back to life with his Cappella Mediterranea in 2010. The retelling of the Old Testament Flood and the salvation of biodiversity by Noah’s ark brims with imagination and gripping drama. García Alarcón describes the oratorio by Baroque composer Michelangelo Falvetti as a rousing »deluge of emotions«. Between rising tide and raging waves, a maelstrom emerges that calls even more clearly to action, against the backdrop of mounting catastrophic floods. Johannes Brahms wrote his »German Requiem« as a consolation for the living. Together with the Rundfunkchor Berlin, Jochen Sandig allows us to experience the profoundly human message of the Requiem with all our senses, focusing on love overcoming pain and grief. Thus, he creates a space for community and collective catharsis in the Liederhalle Stuttgart. The separation of stage and audi torium is abolished, choir and audience being directly connected. In April 2021, the moving production also comforted the participants in the memorial service for those who died in the Corona pandemic. The host was Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Liederhalle, Stuttgart Tickets 25 ⁄ 50 € A production by the Rundfunkchor Berlin in cooperation with Sasha Waltz & Guests and the Radialsystem Berlin. To make Pina Bausch’s creative achievements accessible not only to a broad worldwide audience but also to a new generation of danceprofessionals, the Pina Bausch Foundation also makes her choreographies available to international companies. A new collaboration has created an evening with the École des Sables and Sadler’s Wells London, in which »The Rite of Spring« is interpreted by an ensemble of 38 dancers from 14 African countries, specially formed for the occasion. It ends with the new duet »common ground[s]« by Germaine Acogny, founder of the École des Sables, and Malou Airaudo, one of the first dancers at the Tanztheater Wuppertal.

As a two-part dance evening, the New York guest performance »THE DAY« explores traumatizing events. It all began with the composition »World to Come«, which deals with the appalling impact of 11 September 2001. Years later, the question »What was the most important day in your life?« was added, inspiring composer David Lang and cellist Maya Beiser to write a further piece. The answers to this could not be more different; they reflect the multi-faceted realities of life for us humans. Together with dance legend Wendy Whelan and iconic choreographer Lucinda Childs, »THE DAY« sublimates individual and collective sensibilities and creates a meditation on individual fates and world catastrophes that touch us in equal measure.

Great humour in challenging times was also displayed by Beethoven during the composition of his 7th Symphony. Although the composer was already severely burdened by his deafness, he created a lively, joyful symphony in A major. Wit, rhythm and energy are precisely the qualities conveyed by this year’s line-up for the characteristic Open Air at the Seeschloss Monrepos. The longawaited meeting of the Festival Orchestra and conductor Alondra de la Parra together with tenor Julian Prégardien once again awakens the longing for long summer evenings, in which the rich soundscapes of Arturo Márquez, Ludwig van Beethoven and Samuel Barber are combined with picturesque fireworks.

8 pm

Conductor René Jacobs describes the Missa Solemnis in D major as brilliant yet humble. Ludwig van Beethoven invested four years of meticulous research into music history and theology into the piece and finally freed the liturgical text from its strict conventions, creating his personal musical interpreta tion. The RIAS Kammerchor Berlin, four soloists and the Freiburger Barockorchester under René Jacobs will fill the Friedenskirche with the »most sincere setting of the Mass«, according to Jacobs. As Beethoven wished in his original dedication: »arising in the heart, may it return to the heart!«. Friedenskirche, Ludwigsburg Tickets 15 ⁄ 29 ⁄ 45 ⁄ 55 €
