PIEPS KNOW-HOW:
EFFECTIVE PINPOINTING Always probe perpendicular to the snow surface. Probe in a spiral pattern, in 30 cm intervals around the marked fine search result. Communicate a hit and leave probe in place.
Even with systematic probing work, the buried person can be missed several times and this can lead to untercertainty. Furthermore the interpretation of the results is often difficult. The iPROBE ensures a clear pinpointing result. You

WITH SKIS THROUGH THE ALPS
24
On March 17, 2018 seven athletes (two are part of the PIEPS family) started a crossing of the Alps from Reichenau/Rax in Austria to the seaport at the Côte d’Azur. It’s considered the longest ski-tour in the world with a distance of 1.721 kilometers and 89.644m altitude gain with skis or by foot. In total they were 375 hours in movement.

was t challenge „The bigges ve us ga at th r, he the bad weat every st mo time al a very hard . ys sa nn ma Wall day”, David e tour th of d en e “Only at th me rded with so we were rewa sunshine.”
At the end great moments in the mountains and long, energy-sapping day-hikes are what will stay in their mind – and often in very extreme conditions. Five athletes reached the goal but were confronted with harsh winterly weather, wind and bad sight. This demanding expedition needed a careful planning. Changing snow and weather conditions required always a Plan B and C and lots of experience in risk evaluation. But safety always came first. Hence, the athletes had to stop the ascent of the highest mountain of the Alps, the Mont Blanc with 4.810 m, only 100 meters below the peak due to high avalanche risk. The project itself was inspired by four Austrian ski mountaineers that chose the similar route in 1971. 26
The group approach of decision making, and highs and lows brought the team - Bernhard Hug (SUI), David Wallmann (AUT), Philipp Reiter (GER) as well as Janelle and Mark Smiley (USA) – close together during the tour. The five athletes who didn’t know each other before, were on the way for nearly 11 hours a day. Beside the fitness, mental strength and team spirit were the most important factors for the expedition to succeed. What stays in mind is an adventure, which the involved athletes will tell their grandchildren about! A story they wrote on their own.
