Wallauer’s 100th Anniversary
i
4th Generation Family-Owned Business Offers Special Promotions to Celebrate!
t has been inspiring to see the way that NYC communities have come together to support businesses during COVID-19: women-owned businesses, small businesses, diverse-owned, family businesses and everything in between. As things really start to open up again and we transition back into a sort of “normal”, we have to take the time to celebrate this strength, as well as all of the long-standing businesses that persevered. That’s why, we’re celebrating Wallauer Paint and Decorating Centers, a 4th generation family-owned business, for their 100th anniversary, and we invite you to join in! Psst...skip down to the bottom to see the deals! If you haven’t heard about Wallauer, you must get caught up: headquartered in White Plains, New York, Wallauer offers the finest selection of paints from Benjamin Moore, specialty products and accessories from Ace Hardware, window treatments from Hunter Douglas, designer fabrics and wall coverings, area rugs, home design services, and has 15 stores across the region. Dream home makeover, anyone? Heads up: there are five Ace Hardware departments, so be sure to check out which location has what you need. As parents ourselves, it’s always refreshing to hear about how family and business grow together. We love our families with all our hearts, so it’s truly magical when we create something together. And that’s exactly what the Wallauer family did. One hundred years ago, Co-founder Clarence Wallauer gave up his job as a paint salesman and opened the very first Wallauer store. After suffering a stroke, he invited his son-in-law Bob Duncan Sr. to help out. In the 1950s, grandson Bob Duncan Jr. came on board and officially took over in 1982. Now retired, he passed it along to his two daughters, Donna and Debbie Duncan. Did you follow that family tree? If not, you get the vibe: family,

family, family, oh, and more family! It’s no surprise then that the company philosophy has always been: “Good oldfashioned family values, a team approach, and integrity.” Family has shaped Wallauer’s success, making Wallauer “the go-to place for home improvement locally,” says COO Edward Klein, alongside “having a knowledgeable group of people who know their craft and provide excellent customer service.” Wallauer’s strong family roots have crafted (pun very much intended) a warm, welcoming and down-to-earth environment that impacts employees and customers alike. NYC parents: this is your sign to start that oh-so-cute (and oh-so-successful) family business you always wanted to! So how are we going to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this amazing company? That’s easy, because Wallauer will be having promotions throughout 2021! Our favorite? To thank long time customers as well as new, a $100 gift certificate will be awarded to one shopper in every store every month through December. To register for the drawings, visit www.wallauer.com/100. Wallauer will also offer a “buy one paint sample, get a second one at ‘100%’ off” throughout the year. Visit https://www.wallauer.com/specials/ for more details. You can visit a Wallauer store to wish them a happy 100th or shop online. Check out www.shop.wallauer.com or call (914)948-4000!
Celebrating of Fix Ups, Touch Ups, Freshen Ups and More We go beyond paint too. In store or virtual color and design consultations are available. Ask our professional window design experts about window coverings including blinds, shades, shutters and draperies.

The STEM Alliance
i
Growing the next generation of STEM leaders
f you have a child who tinkers, plays with technology, or whose favorite word is “why,” then you need to know The STEM Alliance! The STEM Alliance is a Westchester County nonprofit creating a network of STEM learning opportunities for children and adults. With STEM jobs (in science, technology, engineering and math) growing at an accelerated pace, there is high demand for skilled graduates. The STEM Alliance is growing the next generation of STEM leaders! More importantly, kids love their programming. The Alliance’s programs appeal to kids’ natural curiosity. From robotics to physics, biology to coding -- there is something for all ages and interests. 20% of program seats offer scholarships, providing equal access to low-income children. Learning opportunities start as early as pre-K and go beyond high school. Their Girls DO series helps girls find their STEM passion and keeps them engaged through the upper grades. Many of their programs can be adapted for students with disabilities. The STEM Alliance was launched in 2013 by a group of moms who could not find engaging programs for their science-minded kids. They made their mark with STEMtastic, a free STEM festival that offers dozens of hands-on learning experiences and draws over 1,000 attendees annually. The event buzzes with activity as participants touch, build and explore. Although postponed in 2020, the STEM Alliance is looking forward to hosting STEM-tastic again in Spring 2022. With activities suspended due to the health crisis, The STEM Alliance turned their attention to a wide range of pandemicrelated problems. They helped organize food distributions, raised funds to help local makers create PPE (personal protective equipment) for frontline workers, and launched a one-to-one virtual mentoring program to support low-income children with distance learning. “We knew we had to help, so we put our skills to work,” says STEM Alliance President Meg Käufer. “Our strength is our ability to create innovative programs and

STEM is all about solving problems and thinking creatively. We put our beliefs into action.” The pandemic underscored another problem impacting low-income families: the “digital divide.” Most of us take for granted our computers and internet access. But here in Westchester, there are over 30,000 homes with no computer and more than 50,000 with no internet. Recognizing a glaring need, The STEM Alliance launched Digital Equity Now which provides a device, a hotspot and 15 hours of tech education to qualifying participants. The Alliance is partnering with other Westchester nonprofits to serve clients with high digital distress. Funded by donations and grants -- including funding from Westchester County -- Digital Equity Now is the only program in the County that combines device ownership and internet access with tech education, leading to improved job opportunities, telehealth access and more. The STEM Alliance is back to business with programs that include: • Family Tinkering Nights • After school classes for libraries, PTAs, and other organizations • Pop-Up workshops for school vacations • Online & in-person classes • Events, fundraisers & more For more information on their programs or to volunteer, visit www. theSTEMalliance.org.

Lessonbee
The Online Learning Platform That is Redefining A Family’s Mental Health and Education
W
hile the pandemic and being in lockdown was historically hard for everyone, it was especially rough for kids. In ordinary, prepandemic life, I would hear an abbreviated version of my child’s day when they’d come home from school. But during the pandemic, I had an up-close look into what life is like for a middle schooler. It was a reminder that kids have so much peer pressure and anxiety that seems to be exacerbated by social media. Always here for a good TikTok, but social media has also formed some unrealistic expectations for our kiddos. Watching my child struggle with a class or get anxious about not doing an assignment quickly enough was tough to watch, and social media #homeworkhacks don’t necessarily help. I realized that he is at an age when a simple pep talk would not suffice. Both my child and I need to be educated on what we are going through. Enter Lessonbee. Culturally Relevant Health Education Content That Promotes Mental and Emotional Well-being Lessonbee is an online learning platform with lessons, courses and classes that both parents and students can use to develop their relationship to their own mental and physical health and well-being. Finally, a platform that gets it! For grades K-12 and beyond, members can access and choose the learning experiences that they need at that moment. What we love about Lessonbee is that the platform clearly recognizes the importance of mental health, especially during the age of COVID-19, while also meeting kids where they are with engaging content. The lessons are creative, current and relatable, meaning kids aren’t going to say, “Nope, not for me.” The stories are realistic and include cultural references that kids get, which keeps

the flow of knowledge going. They can read and watch lessons such as What is Mental Health? and Managing Stress and Building Resilience, two of our favorites! While my son is in a great school, Lessonbee not only strengthens what he acquires in this crucial time, but teaches him how to take care of himself mentally and physically. Lessonbee truly is the health education that we need. The Online Learning Platform For The Entire Family Let’s not forget that Lessonbee is also for us, the parents. Classes such as Women in the Workplace and Workplace Mental Health recognize that parents need support too. Our mental health is just as crucial; we are the ones keeping it together! I am a better parent when I take care of myself, because it is only then that I can fully take care of my kids and the other people in my life. And as parents, we strive to teach our children values that will positively shape how they relate to others and come to understand the world around them. What I appreciate about Lessonbee is that its core values of authenticity, bravery, creativity, diversity and clarity totally hit the mark with what I hope my children will develop and take with them in the future. Hop on the Lessonbee Wave For obvious reasons, Lessonbee is becoming increasingly popular for kids and adults alike. Want to join in on all that this online learning platform has to offer? Fresh Paint Easy ways to upgrade the look of your home By Donna Duarte-Ladd
W
hether you are changing things up in the home you have owned pre-babies or just moved to the suburbs — there are ways to makeover your space with a few coats of paint for a brighter home. So in the spirit of being realistic about your time and moneyhere are some ideas on updating one room or spot in your home. Paint a space for an instant lift I love a nice white painted wall, and frankly, I have to get talked into a new paint color every few years. Pick one area you feel needs a bit of life, choose a color that maybe you haven’t tried before, and paint away. Once the new color hits the wall, it is a welcoming refresh and pushes me to paint more rooms. Painting

an entire home is a chore, and there is no rule book stating you have to paint every part of the house for an upgrade. Change up the wooden stairs with a bright color This is one of my favorites, and while it can be a bit tedious, the payoff is tremendous. First, give your stairs a refresh of a base coat or apply a new base coat. Then using painter’s tape — tape the seams of the stairs, basically at the parts you don’t want to get any paint on. Make sure you paint over the tape, so you have clean lines after the paint dries and the tape is removed. Finally, using a Semi-Gloss, paint the stairs, dry, repeat, and voila! Colorblock for a room upgrade You have the painter’s tape, so why not fun

up the bathroom wall, kids’ room, or even the bathroom with color blocking. Color blocking can go from simple to a bit more intricate. Thankfully, there are many tutorials online that can help you more with the more artsy color blocking. I like to first use a yardstick to pencil in the line, then outline it with painter’s tape. I stick to triangles with more geometric shapes as they are frankly the easiest to do. Tip: Your color blocking doesn’t have to be in geometric shapes. You can paint half the wall, half a circle, or a square on the wall. I have even used color blocking in place of a faux ‘headboard’ for my oldest son’s first toddler room. Paint a chalkboard wall Are your kids at an age when they are drawing
on the walls? Listen, it happens, and kids should not be drawing on the walls, but giving them a fun canvas where it is allowed will minimize it; if not, stop the tagging on your precious walls. I have had chalkboard paint on the kitchen door, cover half a wall, and at one point in the entire kids’ bedroom wall. What I love most about it is it looks chic and really can change up space. Chalkboard paint comes in an array of colors; I personally love classic black. Tip: Before you paint your chalkboard wall, make sure the wall is smooth. I will use sandpaper or wipe the wall clean before applying the first coat. Also, I have never gotten away with just one coat; usually, you will need to do at least two coats.
