The curriculum is designed to challenge high-IQ students and provide them with experiential opportunities to engage and inspire them. The school offers a full athletic and fine arts program that complements the giftedness that often students with dyslexia and learning differences possess.

Over the past six years the Patrick Academic Resource Center (PARC) at Staten Island Academy, under the direction of David Gordon, Ph.D. has emerged as one such exemplary program on Staten Island in preparing learners with dyslexia to maximize their potential. Dr. Gordon, and his staff, bring a personal perspective to their thoughtful, informative and reassuring interactions with children and families.

teaching students diagnosed with dyslexia and similar language-based learning disabilities, at an early age and intervening comprehensively from ages 3-17. This unique and personalized approach provides students with consistent support from subject area teachers and OrtonGillingham trained learning specialists, both in and outside of the classroom. Our students are guided to know themselves as learners and to become self-advocates in achieving their academic goals. Since the program’s inception, 100% of the PARC students have graduated and attended colleges and universities nationwide—having benefitted from the layered and caring approach available.

The criteria for admissions consist of the following: Written diagnosis of a language-based learning disability; average to superior intellectual potential and no behavioral or emotional problems that would potentially interfere with the instructional program; and finally an inperson interview and observational testing with a member of the PARC team. s the saying goes, “The best things in life are free!” If your family is saving up for an exciting vacation or a few fun road trips this year, every cent counts. That’s why we’ve rounded up a bunch of our favorite local activities you can do with your kids that won’t break the bank. As always, be sure to check websites for dates, times, locations and Covid precautions before you go.

Ride the ferry. It’s the cheapest boat tour in New York! And a childhood rite of passage for native Staten Islanders.

Catch a Ferry Hawks game. Watch Staten Island’s newest pro-ball team at their newly renovated stadium, set against the spectacular NYC skyline, for as low as $7.50 on Tuesdays and $15 other days.

See a movie under the stars. Bring a blanket and some popcorn and catch a familyfriendly flick at a local park under the stars.

Hop on the Regal Summer Movie Express. Escape the heat this summer at a cool theater catching a kid-friendly movie for just two bucks.

Stop into the Staten Island Children’s Museum on a free day. A regular museum ticket is normally just $8, but they offer locally sponsored free museum days throughout the year on holidays when kids are off school.

Hike or bike the greenbelt. Widely considered the greenest borough, Staten Island has almost 3,000 acres of Greenbelt laden with trails winding around the entire island where a biker or hiker would never get bored.

Join in library programs. After a lengthy pause due to Covid, most Staten Island library branches are again offering their educational and fun programs for toddlers up to teens.

Willowbrook Park. A ticket is just $2.50.

Join Urban Park Rangers Programs. The ranger-led programs teach kids to appreciate nature and wildlife and learn outdoor survival skills. They are free and offered through the Park’s Dept. in public green spaces throughout the city.

Visit a nature center. Learn about local ecology from a nature center, most of which offer special programming for kids. In Staten Island, you can visit the Greenbelt Nature Center and the Blue Heron Nature Center.

Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve also offers similar programming.

Explore Richmondtown. This Mid Island living history museum takes visitors back to the colonial era, offering tours and programs throughout the year.

Take photos at Snug Harbor. Spend a day enjoying the beauty of Snug Harbor’s picturesque botanical gardens and snap the perfect shot for your new profile pic.

Search for Monarch butterflies in Clove Lakes Park. The beautiful butterflies can be seen at the start of summer here in New York City.

Visit the National Lighthouse Museum.

This North Shore museum is located just a few steps from the ferry and offers guided tours of lighthouses, ship graveyards and bird sanctuaries.

Cruise the FDR Boardwalk. Bike and surrey rentals are available at Sand Lane on the boardwalk, where you can take your family for a beachside stroll or ride.

Go to the zoo. Spend an afternoon with sloths, Amur leopards and more at the Staten Island Zoo. Tickets are just $6 for kids and admission is free or by donation on Wednesday afternoons.

Go window shopping at Empire Outlets.

Staten Island is home to NYC’s only outlet destination, and it’s located right on the waterfront. Window shopping is a lot more fun with a view.

Staten Island University Hospital to Open Women and Newborn Center

e

xpectant parents can look forward to delivering their babies in a new, nurturing environment at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) in late 2023 thanks to a recent $2 million in federal funding secured by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis. That money comes on top of more than $2.5 million donated by the Vincent Gruppuso Foundation for the center’s construction.

The Gruppuso Family Women and Newborn Center will feature 10 labor, delivery and recovery rooms; three operating rooms; 37 maternity beds in private rooms; and 12 nursery bassinets. It offers a seamless birth experience for mothers, babies and families by locating the maternity unit, labor-anddelivery unit and NICU on a single floor.

Women and newborn services are currently offered in three different locations across two floors, said Dr. Brahim Ardolic, executive director of the hospital. He explained that the new center will provide more efficient care for mothers and infants at the hospital.

“Since this hospital opened, maternal child services have not been aligned for efficiency and, just as important today, not aligned in the way families choose to experience this level of care and service,” Ardolic said. “This new building solves the efficiency issue, and frees up existing space to be converted into advanced surgical suites to bring more services to Staten Island – it’s a win-win.”

The new center will be a 52,000-squarefoot building at 475 Seaview Avenue. It will be connected to the hospital by a bridge.

For Michael Caridi, whose late fatherin-law’s namesake foundation made the groundbreaking donation for the new addition to the hospital a reality, it’s a long time coming. “Twenty-five years ago my wife was having our first daughter at Staten Island University Hospital. She was in a room with another new mom who had just gone through a difficult labor and delivery and was in a lot of pain,” explained Caridi.

“When the hospital began working on a concept for the new center, we saw that there was a need for families to have dignity and privacy during their hospital stay.”

To that end, Caridi said the center will honor what Vincent Gruppuso cherished most. “My father-in-law loved children. Everything was about his grandchildren and his family,” said Caridi. “The Gruppuso Family Women and Newborn Center is all about family and children.”

Neighborhood Guide A shore-to-shore peek into Staten Island’s many communities

taten Island has so much to offer when it comes to family fun. In fact, residents don’t even have to leave the borough to experience top-notch entertainment! Every neighborhood has something unique for kids and families to enjoy. From St. George’s bustling arts and culture scene to Tottenville’s charming streets and sprawling parks, Staten Island is home to lots of opportunities for family fun. Browse our guide to some featured Staten Island neighborhoods that offer fun for all ages to enjoy!

St. George While Staten Island is known for its beautiful parks and natural areas, there’s a neighborhood on the borough’s North Shore that’s thriving with entertainment, shopping, historic architecture and so much more for NYC and Staten Island families to enjoy: St. George.

St. George is considered part of Staten Island’s downtown district. Borough Hall is based there, along with lots of other government buildings. Overlooking New York Harbor, St. George serves as a portal to the rest of Staten Island. It continues to undergo a revitalization effort by local government and community stakeholders in an effort to boost its economy while adding many more fun activities for residents to enjoy.

Like much of Staten Island, St. George was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before it was colonized by the Dutch and British. Residential development began in the 1800s and there was even a summer resort there at one time! Many houses in the 16

district were built in the late 1800s, reflecting this time period that gives the neighborhood a charming architectural appeal. Eventually, after ferry service to Manhattan began in 1905, the neighborhood really started to take shape with the construction of Borough Hall, the Richmond County Courthouse and other government buildings.

St. George saw a revival in the 1990s and well into the start of the 21st century. More families started moving in, as it was cheaper to live here than in other parts of the city.

Through recent years, prominent structures we know today were created, including the Postcards 9/11 Memorial, and later on the National Lighthouse Museum, Empire Outlets and more.

While St. George has seen some ups and downs, the ongoing revival continues to benefit the area, according to residents, including Mary Sobiechowski, a local advocate of the neighborhood.

“The revitalization has been working,” Sobiechowski said. “Community groups are working together and have really helped.

There are so many new restaurants, you can hear music and people laughing, you see children playing.”

These days, there’s plenty to see and do in St. George on Staten Island. Families can easily spend a whole day in this historic neighborhood and not have a moment of boredom.

Staten Island Ferry. The first thing that comes to mind when people think of St. George is the famous Staten Island Ferry — the centerpiece of the neighborhood. It’s pretty much the birthright of every Staten Island and NYC kid to take a ride on this

famous boat. The five-mile, 25-minute trip to Manhattan offers breathtaking views of New York Harbor. Have your camera ready, because throughout the ride, passengers get great views of NYC landmarks and areas of interest, including Governors Island, Ellis Island, and perhaps the most amazing view of all, the Statue of Liberty. As an added perk, there’s no charge for the ferry, so families get to see all this and more for free!

The National Lighthouse Museum.

Every good waterfront destination needs a lighthouse museum—and St. George has one! After you hop off the ferry, a threeminute walk to the museum boasts scenic views of New York Harbor, after which you can explore Staten Island’s hidden lighthouse history and see some wonderful exhibits. The National Lighthouse Museum is located at 200 The Promenade at Lighthouse Point. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 4pm. General admission is $7, $5 for seniors and free for children 12 and younger.

The 9/11 Postcards Memorial. This beautiful memorial honors the 263 Staten Island residents who tragically lost their lives in the 2001 and 1993 attacks on the World Trade Center. Nearby is another memorial to the

Staten Island first responders who have died from exposure to toxic substances at the site of attacks in the aftermath of 9/11. Designed by architect Masayuki Sono, the memorial is a place of solemnity to honor and remember the victims of the attacks. The Postcards Memorial is located on Bank Street.

The Empire Outlets. This is a must-see attraction for both kids and adults. First, it’s conveniently attached to the entrance of the ferry terminal, so it’s right there when you get off or on the boat! (as an added bonus, on-site parking is available for just $5). This waterfront shopping district is the first outlet destination in New York City. Browse stores such as Natural Bath & Body, which has a DIY skin bar where you can make your own body sprays, scrubs and washes, and Vanity House Designs, where you find a unique gift for a friend.

Don’t think for a second kids won’t enjoy themselves because it’s too much shopping.

There are big open spaces where kids play, photo opportunities at the big EO (Empire Outlets) sign, and tons of kid-friendly events on a regular basis.

Of course, no shopping outlet is complete without some big-name retailers on site. At 2022–2023 | SIParent.com

Empire Outlets, these include Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, Banana Republic Factory and many more. There’s also Clinton Hall, an onsite beer garden and restaurant. Empire Outlets are located at 55 Richmond Terrace.

It’s open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 8pm and Sunday, 11am to 8pm.

The Greenmarket. Stop by St. George on a Saturday morning or early afternoon to browse this lush market. Shop a variety of items, including seasonal fresh fruit, cheese, meat and baked goods. There’s also an array of plants to choose from, as well as juice pressed from an upstate New York fruit orchard. The greenmarket is located at St. Mark’s Place and Hyatt Street. It’s open Saturdays year-round and hours vary by season.

Everything Goes Book Cafe. Located on Bay Street, this charming book store sells new and used books, organic coffees, chocolate and lots of baked goods.The store also holds live events for the public to enjoy. It’s like sitting out in the backyard.”

St. George Theatre. This iconic, 2,800seat venue first opened its doors in 1928.

Today, it hosts shows of all kinds for visitors of all ages, including many big-name acts and popular local favorites like Eric D’Alessandro, Pete Davidson, Candice Guardino and Vic Dibitetto. It also holds fun shows for kids from time to time, including classic movie screenings. Check out the theater’s complete schedule of shows at stgeorgetheatre.com. St. George Theatre is located at 35 Hyatt St. Hypno-Tronic Comics. Kids love to browse this neighborhood store’s selection of comics, books and toys for children. Owner Joy Ghigliotti opened the store in 2013 with Ed Varuolo, who has since passed away.

Varuolo was the co-creator of Staten Island community television’s cult series, Industrial Television. The store is dedicated to his memory.

“He loved what we did and was so proud of making a cool place to visit and shop,” Ghigliotti said. “The best part of being in St. 18

The Staten Island Ballpark. Formerly the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, the Staten Island Ballpark recently reopened after undergoing various upgrades to debut its new Atlantic League baseball team, the Staten Island FerryHawks. The 7,000-seat ballpark boasts many new features, including concession upgrades and activity areas for kids. The FerryHawk name was selected from over 2,000 names submitted by fans as part of a contest launched by the team owners who say a FerryHawk “is a fun-loving, baseballplaying superhero that combines the power, toughness and persistence of the Staten Island Ferry and the red-tailed and cooper’s hawks that are seen around Staten Island.”

Mid Island While there are many wonderful areas on both the North Shore and South Shore of Staten Island, there’s also plenty of great places in between. The center section of Staten Island,

usually referred to as Mid Island, comprises communities like Travis, New Springville, Heartland Village, Graniteville, Bloomfield, Richmondtown, New Dorp, Oakwood, Bay Terrace, Willowbrook, Bulls Head and parts of Sunnyside and Todt Hill. Within these charming residential towns are lots of venues and activities for families to enjoy.

The Greenbelt. The centerpiece of Staten Island’s Mid Island section is The Greenbelt, a NYC flagship park that comprises almost 3,000 acres of land. The natural elements found there are quite plentiful and include forests, wetlands, lakes, ponds and streams.

Historic Richmond Town Historic Richmond Town. There’s a place in Staten Island where you can step back in time to America’s colonial era. It’s a place where you can watch history come alive through architecture, period costumes, liveaction trade demonstrations and more. This gem is known as Historic Richmond Town.

Historic Richmond Town is a living history village where visitors are immersed in fascinating local history, art and culture. It’s not only an educational place to visit, but a fun one, too! Some of the newer stores and attractions include the AMC Theatre, Dave & Buster’s, Shake Shack and more.

But the mall isn’t just about shopping. It offers plenty of family-friendly events and activities all year long, including the seasonal Staten Island Mall Carnival, book-signing events at Barnes & Noble, holiday events including photos with Santa and the Easter Bunny, arts and crafts shows and more. The Staten Island Mall is located at 2655 Richmond Ave. Freshkills Park. Located on the former landfill site, this amazing park will be almost three times the size of Manhattan’s Central Park once it’s complete. The park is currently being built and is opening in phases through 2036. Two completed highlights of the park include: Schmul Park. The toddler-friendly neighborhood favorite in the Travis area that boasts ball courts and a popular playground that attracts families from the whole borough. It also serves as the entrance to Freshkills Park.

New Springville Greenway. This lush bike path winds along the eastern edge of Freshkills Park. You may have seen people biking on the path on your way to the mall, as it runs parallel to Richmond Avenue.

In addition to this natural outdoor recreational space, the Freshkills Park Alliance hosts a variety of events throughout the year so Staten Islanders can enjoy and get to know the park more. Learn more about events, the park’s progress and more at freshkillspark.org.

Midland Beach & South Beach. These neighborhoods run along Staten Island’s eastern shoreline and overlook Lower New York Bay, and they truly come alive in the summer! The Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk stretches through both areas.

Tottenville At the southernmost tip of New York State, you’ll find a town that is home to a Main Street lined with mom-and-pop shops, marshlands with native birds, open skies, bridle paths and very little traffic congestion.

This quaint neighborhood is Tottenville.

There is a lot to see and do in Tottenville, as well as its surrounding neighborhoods of Richmond Valley and Charleston. The area is a wonderful destination for a day trip, whether you already live in Staten Island or are coming from out of town. The small-town feel will make you forget that you’re still, in fact, in New York City.

Tottenville has a traditional suburban charm that isn’t found in too many other parts of the city. Houses have sprawling yards, and many are big enough to outfit an in-ground pool. The local library and police station—the 123 NYPD Police Precinct—are housed in historic buildings, with other beautiful landmark buildings nearby. Many people

who live there are native Staten Islanders.

But others who live in Tottenville and nearby moved there because, well, they love it!

Here’s something for foodies: In addition to lots of natural land, parks and space, Tottenville and its nearby communities form a mecca that has arguably some of the best Italian restaurants in the city. There’s Angelina’s Ristorante, which is popular with the locals and offers amazing water-side views. DeLuca’s is another favorite, known for its beautiful ambiance and an extensive menu of culinary delights like penne vodka, gnocchi sorrentino and more. Of course, the neighborhood is packed with many other restaurants, pizza parlors and delis for appetites of all kinds to enjoy.

Getting There. Tottenville is easy to spot on a Staten Island map since it’s located way down at the southern tip. The town is

bordered on three sides by water, including the Arthur Kill and the New York Bight.

Getting here might seem like a world away if you live in Staten Island’s North Shore or the rest of the city, but it’s actually pretty accessible!

If you’re coming from Manhattan, just hop on the Staten Island Ferry, which docks in St. George, Staten Island, and make a direct connection to the Staten Island Railway. The entire train ride is about 14 miles. It seems long, but the train is completely outdoors, giving passengers great views of Staten Island towns along the way. Staten Island residents can also hop on the train (most stops are free!) or drive to Tottenville. A bonus about driving to Tottenville or anywhere on the island’s South Shore is that parking is—usually— pretty good.

Plan a day trip. As quiet and relaxed as the Tottenville, Richmond Valley and Charleston neighborhoods are, there is still plenty to see and do here. Families can visit an array of restaurants (like the ones mentioned earlier), museums and nature centers, do some shopping and more. Here’s a look at some neighborhood highlights.

Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve. Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve is nestled in Charleston. Its beautiful, green landscape provides a soothing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s a great place to unplug, so leave your phone at home and explore the 270 acres of forest land and five miles of hiking trails. And if you ride horses, there are also five miles of equestrian trails to enjoy. (Horses are not available to rent.)

You might encounter wildlife, such as whitetailed deer, groundhogs, squirrels, skunks, a variety of birds and other gorgeous species.

It’s located at 2351 Veterans Road West and is open daily year-round daily, sunrise to sunset. The Interpretive Center, which has exhibits, classroom space, games and access to preserve trails, is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 4:30pm.

The Conference House Museum. This beautiful water-side museum is one that families and kids of all ages will enjoy.

The Conference House was named for the unsuccessful Revolutionary War peace conference that was held there in 1776 between the Americans and the English.

Today, the museum is considered a National Historic Landmark as well as a New York City Landmark.

Conference House Park sits on 265 acres and offers scenic views of Raritan Bay. The park’s sprawling lawns make it a lovely spot for a spring or summer picnic. Other highlights include a playground, hiking trails and bike trails for families to enjoy. It’s located at 7455 Hylan Blvd.

Snug Harbor While exploring Tottenville, stop by the library to sit down and enjoy a good book.

Voracious readers will love the library’s extensive book collection, which features approximately 20,000 covers. There’s even more to check out here than great reads. The 10,000-square-foot library has computers, a children’s room, a teen room with lounge space, on-site programs and more for the community to enjoy. It’s located at 225 Bricktown Way. You can also visit the Tottenville Library, which has public computers and children’s, young adult and adult collections at 7430 Amboy Road.

Sandy Ground Historical Society.

Museum. Located in nearby Rossville, the Sandy Ground Historical Museum is dedicated to the oldest continuously inhabited free Black settlement in the United States. The museum interprets the history of Sandy Ground using traditional exhibits and guided tours of the museum, music, arts and crafts, film, ethnic foods and lectures to the community, and civic and cultural groups.

Charleston Shopping Center. If you’re looking to get some quick shopping done

without dealing with the mall crowds, Charleston Shopping Center is a great choice. Popular retailers here include Target, Ulta Beauty, Christmas Tree Shops, Petco, Michael’s and more. You can also catch a flick at the Regal Bricktown Charleston, located in the shopping center.

Snug Harbor It’s well known that arts and entertainment is alive in New York City. But off the city’s beaten path is a cultural hotspot where art thrives, community connects and nature inspires. Staten Island’s Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden is a hidden gem that many New Yorkers outside the borough have yet to discover.

Set on a sprawling 83-acre campus dotted with trees, gardens, museums, historic architecture and so much more, Snug Harbor

provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Sure, Staten Island is already known as the “borough of parks.” But Snug Harbor is packed with parks and more, making it a prime cultural center in New York City. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, history buff, nature lover or appreciate live music and performances, there’s something for families and individuals of all ages to enjoy at Snug Harbor.

A Rich History. Snug Harbor was originally established through an endowment as a retirement home for sailors in the 1800s. Back then, it was called “Sailors’ Snug Harbor.” By the mid-20th century, the number of residents at Sailors’ Snug Harbor started to decrease, due in part to Social Security and other programs becoming available to financially help retirees. Snug Harbor’s history is rich and deep, and

through the years, it eventually became the cultural locale that Staten Islanders know and love today.

When you visit, you can simply meander through the beautiful grounds, or pop into some of the on-site attractions. There are 26 historic structures, botanical gardens, a twoacre urban farm, wetlands and parkland, and so much more at Snug Harbor. It’s important to note that although it’s free to enter the grounds, some on-site institutions charge admission.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden is home to five educational and exciting museums.

Newhouse Center For Contemporary Art. This is Snug Harbor’s main art gallery.

It is one of the first buildings visitors see upon entering the campus from the Richmond Terrace entrance, which is located off of Staten Island’s north shoreline. Set in a Greek-Revival building on the front lawn, the museum serves as Snug Harbor’s Visitor Center. And of course, it’s a great place to see art. The galleries feature exciting and experimental art from across the world.

The Staten Island Children’s Museum.

Kids of all ages enjoy this whimsical and educational museum. The museum offers cultural, imaginative and creative experiences for kids ages 1 and older. It’s home to 12 indoor and outdoor exhibits, workshops and lots of events for kids and families to enjoy. Be sure to say hello to Francis the Praying Mantis, a giant metal mantis-shaped art installation, when you stop by! The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.

Staten Island Museum. Children and adults with a passion for nature and the environment will enjoy the Staten Island Museum. The museum’s history traces back to 1881 when a group of young naturalists began to pool their collections with a goal to keep record for future generations and advocate for environmental preservation.

It opened as a public museum in 1908.

Through the years, the museum grew, and today, it maintains exhibits that focus on connections between art, natural science and history. It’s open Friday to Sunday, 11am5pm.

Noble Maritime Collection. If you love learning about local waters, you’ll love this museum at Snug Harbor, home to exhibits that celebrate the working waterfront of New York Harbor in the tradition of artist John A. Noble (1913-1983). The museum preserves Robbins Reef Lighthouse and the history of Snug Harbor when it was a home for retired sailors. Curious about Robbins Reef Lighthouse? Owned by the Noble Maritime Collection, it is located between Staten Island’s North Shore and the Statue of Liberty. It’s open Thursday-Sunday, 12-5pm.

Art Lab: School Of Fine And Applied Arts And Gallery. The Art Lab offers classes and workshops, and maintains gallery space.

It provides opportunities for exhibitions of the work of students, faculty, emerging artists, established artist and community groups.

Botanical Gardens. The botanical gardens at Snug Harbor are plentiful. Most are free to enter, but there is a charge to enter the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden ($5; $4 seniors; free for children 5 and younger).

Other gardens include: Rose Garden, Perennial Garden, White Garden, Allee, RCSF Tuscan Garden, Connie Gretz Secret Garden, Wetlands, Healing Garden Snug Harbor also offers a variety of public events, activities, programs and more, which you can find at snug-harbor.org.

Snug Harbor is located in Staten Island at 1000 Richmond Terr. It is accessible by S40 bus from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

The bus ride from the ferry is approximately 10 minutes. The grounds are open daily, dawn to dusk, but individual museum hours vary. Visiting the outdoor grounds is free, but admission varies per museum.

hen the weather warms up, kids want to play outdoors in the fresh air. And what better place to play than at a neighborhood playground? NYC Parks playgrounds are generally open 6am-9pm, while parks are open 6am-10pm or 1am. Park hours can vary, so it’s best to check signs at entrances for posted hours. The majority of the playgrounds below are handicap accessible and contain inclusive play elements. Jules Drive, Elson Court, Regis Court The playground is dedicated to Jennifer Schweiger of Westerleigh, whose life was tragically taken at just 12 years old.
