Welcome
H
ello Neighbor, and welcome to your new home in Westchester County! As our newest resident, I invite you to explore all that our beautiful County has to offer. Made up of 45 cities, towns and villages, Westchester offers rich history, diverse cultures, vibrant neighborhoods and friendly people. There are a variety of things to see and do, from our nationally accredited County Parks System, to historic landmarks, to our active art exhibits, top-rated restaurants and more. Westchester County is a desirable place to live, and for good reason. We are blessed with the beauty of the Long Island Sound and the Hudson River, as well as quaint towns and villages for you to discover with family and friends. Our mass transportation system can get you into the heart of New York City in less than an hour, but we are far enough away to maintain our peaceful tranquility. These qualities are all part of the fabric that make our County the best place for you to call home. I am honored to be serving our residents as County Executive for a second term, and welcome the thousands of people who visit each year. I encourage you to use our website – www.westchestergov.com – as your guide. The site is full of wonderful activities for you to enjoy close to home. If you’d like to learn more about our parks and recreational areas, head to www.parks.westchestergov.com/. You can also visit our tourism website, www. visitwestchesterny.com, to discover ways to go beyond, without going far. Together, we will continue to make Westchester County a destination for all. Sincerely,
George Latimer Westchester County Executive

Thornton-Donovan School An individual, global & thematic educational experience
i
t all started over a century ago, when a small elementary school nicknamed the “Little Red Schoolhouse” was founded in New Rochelle with the primary goal of meeting the changing needs of its students, community and society. Today, 121 years later, the Thornton-Donovan school still retains that mission, with a philosophy and curriculum that directly contribute to the development of students who can use their individual talents to meet the challenges of life. Although the school now serves students from kindergarten to grade 12, small class sizes continue to allow an individual approach to education. Thornton-Donovan welcomes students from any part of the globe who possess ability, who are motivated, who have self-discipline, and who will both gain from and give to the school. The school may also admit a youngster who has the potential for academic success but whose record does not demonstrate it. Qualified pupils are accepted regardless of race, creed, or international origin. Thornton-Donovan places a strong emphasis on international education and exposing students to the globe. In fact, each year has a theme which is usually a geographical area or important historical figure. The capstone of their approach to thematic education is the travel study
experience, where students, faculty and family members travel to thematically relevant locales. Recent trips have taken the school to South Africa, Albania, Iceland, Mongolia, the Balkans, the Andes and more. In addition to their academic programs, they also offer a summer camp for children ages 3-14 featuring myriad activities like karate, drama, fitness, STEM, dancing, Zumba, swimming, sports, arts and crafts, yoga and much more. Thornton-Donovan is proud to be Cognia accredited, and has been recognized for its support of students with high academic potential by the Johns Hopkins University Center. The school is in the 95th percentile of the most diverse private schools in America while also being in the top 20% K-12 Schools in the country. To learn more about enrollment, visit td.edu.

Nature Centers By Shana Liebman
W
hen the weather warms up and the plants start to blooms- Westchester families love to head out and get back in touch with nature. Luckily, Westchester is home to some of the most beautiful and educational nature centers and preserves in New York, where families can not only enjoy the great outdoors, but learn about it as well. They are a perfect weekend destination for children of any age. In fact, the whole family will find weekend fun at Westchester’s best nature centers. The Rye Nature Center is a 47-acre wildlife preserve with over two miles of hiking trails, ponds and streams. It has a beautiful natural playground with climbing structures, a slide and an animal museum. Family programming takes place in the museum space, as well as the indoor and outdoor classrooms. Cranberry Lake Preserve in White Plains is a 190-acre park, which was opened in 1967. It’s a safe haven for migratory birds, turtles and dragonflies—and a wide variety of plants. There is a four-acre lake, cliffs and scrubland, mixed hardwood forest, vernal pools and a swamp. Hike the History Trail to see the remains of a 19th-century farmhouse and early 20th-century stone-mining operation. The Croton Point Nature Center, in the 504acre Croton Point Park, hosts exhibits (often

with hands-on activities) about local flora and fauna, and local and Native American history. The park attracts Bald Eagles in winter, and a capped landfill is now a meadow filled with birds and butterflies. he Sheldrake Environmental Center in T Larchmont offers nearly 60 acres of outdoor space. Explore the woods, stroll past the meadow, relax by the pond and check out the abundant wildlife. Trails are pet-friendly and leashed dogs are welcome. The Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale is located on 33 acres and includes an indoor building, woodland preserve with hiking trails, a pond, organic garden, Nature’s Discovery Playground, a native plant meadow

and over 100 animals, like birds of prey and farm animals. Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining is the largest privately held nature preserve in Westchester — with 15 miles of hiking trails, a two-acre island refuge for over 230 species of native wildflowers, wildlife exhibits and science day camps. The Nature Center and nearby Raptor Loop Trail have birds of prey and animal displays, along with seasonal programs and events. Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mount Kisco on 640 acres of land includes both woodland and streams, and an environmental education center which runs conservation and recreational programs in a reconstructed 200-year-old church. There are exhibits of local flora and fauna, live animals —

including rabbits (named Skittles and Houdini), birds, frogs and turtles — as well as a bird observation window. Muscoot Farm in Katonah is an actual farm that makes history, agriculture and wildlife accessible for kids. Meet cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, ducks, pigs — and walk through historic structures like the milk house, the ice house, the brooder house and the carriage house. There are also over six miles of trails for family hiking. Westchester’s nature centers can introduce kids to the world’s natural playgrounds, and they offer an ideal setting for a family outing. Family-Friendly Dog Parks in Westchester By Shana Liebman
M
illions of Americans adopted dogs during the pandemic, which means there are even more dog-families in Westchester than ever before. In fact, there are dogs everywhere—in yards, on streets and especially in Westchester’s best dog parks. Here are some of our favorite dog parks in Westchester — where canines can run and have fun off-leash, and which are enclosed by parks where kids can play and there are plenty of shady seats for parents to relax. While it may be easier to open the back door, we suggest you treat the whole family

to a dog park adventure in Westchester. The Cedar Lane Dog Park in Ossining is securely fenced in and surrounded by greenery with plenty of shady spots. The mulch and wood chip-covered dog park is divided into size-based sections, with free waste bag dispensers, conveniently located trash cans and water fountains. There are plenty of benches, as well as a dedicated parking lot. Membership is $20 a year. (235 Cedar Ln, Ossining; Open Monday-Friday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m.) Another great option for dog-owners in Westchester is Sleepy Hollow’s Kingsland Point Dog Park, a clean, scenic, fencedin dog park with views of the Hudson

River, Tappan Zee Bridge and the historic Tarrytown Lighthouse. Surrounded by shady picnic tables, the dog park is located within an 18-acre park, where you’ll find hiking, playgrounds, ballfields and fishing. The $25 annual pass includes parking fees. (Tarrytown Light-Knightsland Point Path, Sleepy Hollow; Open daily, 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m.) Bring the whole family when you take the pup to the Abrendoth Dog Park in Port Chester, which has both big- and small-dog sections, and even a section for dogs to be trained. It’s close to a playground that can entertain both toddlers and older kids (with a jungle gym, fire engines, merry-go-round and a tire swing). Plus, there is easy parking and a restroom nearby. (139 Touraine Ave, Port Chester; Open daily, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.) There are tons of dog-friendly activities in Bronxville, including the Bronxville Dog Park which attracts dogs of all shapes and sizes and is open at all hours. The easily accessible, grassy spot even has its own Facebook page where dog owners revel in the park’s daily happenings. (28 Grove Ln, Bronxville; Open 24 hours) Nature-lovers will get a kick out of Paws Place Dog Park in New Rochelle, which features crabapple, black cherry and hickory trees. The dog park has two play sections and a thoughtful enclosure for dogs who are small, elderly or shy. There is a water fountain, poop bags and many benches
throughout the run. The one downside is that you need a permit from New Rochelle’s town hall. (300 Broadfield Rd, New Rochelle; Open daily, sunrise-sunset) Peekskill pups will love the Peeksville Dog Park, a pretty, one-acre dog park (part of the lovely Tompkins Park) which is impeccably maintained by an army of dedicated volunteers. There’s a separate enclosure for small dogs and the cedar chipcovered dog park has benches, poop bags and water fountains. The wider park includes a baseball diamond, basketball court and a wooded area with a paved trail. (1795 Main St, Peekskill; Open daily, 6 a.m.-6 p.m.) Making Pleasantville even more pleasant, the Pleasantville Dog Park has an obstacle course for the dogs and seats for the parents. And in case you forgot your fetch toy, there are always plenty of tennis balls left behind. This dog destination is also part of the enormous Rockefeller State Park Preserve, where families can hike on trails designed to follow the natural flow of the forest. And you can bring the dog hiking too—but don’t forget a leash. (123 Castleton St, Pleasantville; Open daily, sunrise to sunset) There are so many great places to bring dogs in Westchester—hiking trails, riverside beaches and pretty small towns, but dog runs, especially those surrounded by beautiful, kid-friendly parks, make walking the dog fun for the whole family.
