Romania has some of the largest forests in Europe and a wide variety of tree species. It still has 400,000 hectares of virgin forest and 27% of Romania's territory is covered by forests, approximately 6.5 million hectares. Most of them are found in the Carpathians.
Encompassing some 7 million hectares of total forest cover, around half a million of which are old-growth, this “Amazon of Europe” supports the continent’s biggest brown bear population, and carnivores such as wolves and lynx.
“With the aid of satellite images, Global Forest Watch has calculated that 317,000 hectares of Romanian forest were lost to logging between 2001 and 2017. That's the equivalent of 444,000 football pitches.”
