COURSE CALENDAR “Walking through that blue studio door feels both like coming home and the start of an adventure”. This is a familiar sentiment we hear from our students. FUNDING FUTURES 1938/2018 This year is an important anniversary for St Ives School of Painting. In April 1938, artist Leonard Fuller and his wife Marjorie Mostyn set up a handful of easels in Studio 11 in the Porthmeor Studios and opened the blue door to welcome the very first students into the space. This was a fulfilment of a dream. Leonard swore if he survived the horrors of the trenches he would one day open an art school in the picturesque fishing village of St Ives in Cornwall. What would he make of his School today? He would probably notice how warm and dry the studio is since its four million pound refurbishment but otherwise reassuringly unchanged. He would recognise the plaster cast busts still sat on the shelf, the very same chair he used himself in the corner, the floorboards with their rich patina of paint. The view over the newly slated studio roofs to the sweeping sands of Porthmeor beach would look exactly as it did on that spring morning eighty years ago.

He would be impressed at the openminded creativity of our students. Their energy and appetite to develop skills in the fundamentals of drawing and painting as well as embrace the new and contemporary. And the community of artist tutors who now stand where he once stood, sharing their passion for creating art. He would be delighted to see the thriving weekly life drawing classes that attract artists from professionals to total beginners. A tradition that he started, that has carried on ever since. As we celebrate eighty years since that very first class we continue to embrace Fuller’s ethos. For him St Ives School of Painting embodied what is possible even when the world around might tell you otherwise. He created a place to dream, a space to reconnect to what really matters. Something I think we all need today just as much as when the School was founded eighty years ago.

Alison Sharkey, Director

FUNDRAISING FUTURES It’s Sunday morning. A clear winter sun lights up the studio. Stand, look, draw, look again. It may sound simple but this is harder than you thought it would be. To stand at a real artist's easel, looking intently, holding your breath you make that first tentative mark. Two hours disappear. You have been somewhere else. Exhausted, standing back, you feel a rush of pride at the work you have created that will stay with you for the rest of the day. Perhaps an echo of this Sunday morning, the magic of the studio bathed in light, your delight in your achievement, will stay with you for life. What a wonderful way for a young artist to start the year. An adventure in looking at the world in a whole new way. For the past year this experience has been opened up to young people who have come to our after-school club, our Sunday group and in the summer our intensive Culture Camp. We have been able to do this with funding from Arts Council England, Rotary St Ives and Wilhelmina Barns Graham Trust. The other vital funder has been you. It is the money from your course fees that helps us pay for these opportunities. On top of that our students have been donating extra when they can. At the end of 2018 our funding comes to an end. We believe, what these young people get from their time at Porthmeor Studios, is so valuable we don’t want it to stop. We need your help to ensure we keep going. Every pound you donate to us will go towards securing those magical creative moments for many more young people. £60 would help pay for all the materials one child would need to complete a year with us. £200 would cover the cost of a creative session for eight young people. You can opt to donate when you buy a course online or visit the Support Us page on our website and give whatever you feel you can. You can also contact Jane at the School office on 01736 797180 or email jane@schoolofpainting.co.uk. You could also think about us in your will. A bequest will help us run our programme for future generations. Just use these details.
