Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 10/1 was composed over a long period between 1795 and 1798 in which the composer could not decide for quite some time whether to go for four or three movements. Beethoven considered two piano pieces in C minor (WoO 52 and 53) as potential third movements before the finale until he eventually decided in favour of a three-movement version without minuet or scherzo. This edition contains the two rejected pieces in the appendix.

Kapustin composed the 3 Etudes Op. 67 in 1992. The first étude, entitled Glissandi, is written in a swing jazz mood. In No. 2 Ripetizione the difficulty lies in the complexity of the rhythm. No.3 Grappole contains hand clusters in quasi “grape form”.

This is a fascinating re-imagining of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 as a concerto for piano and orchestra. Written by the Russian pianist and composer Alexander Warenberg and keeping true to Rachmaninoff’s style.

Written in 1912 as a ballet piece, Ravel’s masterpiece Daphnis et Chloé is now available in this version for two pianos transcribed by the Russian pianist Vyacheslav Gryaznov. Further transcriptions also available to download.

This volume contains a selection of piano works with children’s pieces and sonatas of intermediate difficulty – a cross-section of the piano music of a major German romanticist, who, like many of his contemporaries, has fallen into oblivion.

On the occasion of performances of the one-act comedy Ogni anno punto e da capo in 1971 at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan, Nino Rota was commissioned to compose some music based on the Italian Rivista tradition of the thirties.

Written in the harmonic style of the twentieth century, these Expressions are either contrasting liturgical pieces (prelude, postlude, offertory, communion) or short concert pieces. The fifteen movements can be linked in a free order, allowing the organist to adapt the duration of his inventions to suit the liturgy.

This Toccata is based on the introitus to Epiphany festival. The composition develops a series of symphonic variations with virtuoso movements and introduces in Hakim’s work Adoration (Schott, ED 22614) for voice, flute and organ, a paraphrase of the first three introitus after Epiphanias.

This work is suitable for lessons and student concerts and is of intermediate difficulty. The Romanze is the most famous and internationally successful work by Norwegian composer Johan Severin Svendsen (18401911), and is a standard work in the repertoire of violinists around the world.

The Fiddler Series, already a much-loved classic, explores the various traditions of violin playing. These volumes contain genres which are not immediately associated with the violin. The two editions now include audio CDs with backing and demonstration tracks. “The Corncob” appeared in Buenos Aires in 1903, one of the first Argentine tangos that quickly became a catchy earworm. This version for violin and piano is ideal for fun music making or an encore piece.

This Violin Sonata, composed in August 1981, has four movements of which the last is titled Frage (Question). The answer (Antwort) follows as the work resolves to the entire piece’s central note, B.

This Sonata for Viola (unaccompanied) was written in 1999. The soloist’s C-string is tuned down a semitone for the entire piece, giving a duskier quality to the tone-colour, and setting up in the very first bar the characteristic melodic/harmonic shape that infiltrates all four movements.

The brief concert piece Fantasia bucolica begins with a dreamy introduction by the solo viola which leads into a virtuoso central section before concluding with intimations of the initial section. A striking feature of this early work is the diverse employment of the percussion section in the orchestral instrumentation.

This challenging piece for viola and piano in the jazz idiom was completed in 2015. An excellent addition to the repertoire of advanced students, the piano accompaniment is also of an advanced difficulty level.

These four pieces are unusual both for the title, Märchenbilder and for scoring a solo viola. With the viola in a soloistic role in chamber music, Schumann’s Märchenbilder, Op. 113, offers a rather unfamiliar, but all the more delightful sound.

CELLO / DOUBLE BASS

Composed in 1926 for violin and piano, Boulanger’s Avant de mourir (or My Prayer) was one of his greatest hits. Numerous greats, including Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald, have covered the piece, which is also often used in film soundtracks.

This sizeable and demanding piece was composed in August 2000. There are five movements: I – Praeludium “d’après Tchaïkovski”, II – Burla – vigoroso, “foursquare”, III – Sarabande, IV – Serenata, V – Gigue en rondeau.

The quiet, poetic language of the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov which characterizes these two compositions will fascinate musicians and audience alike. This three-movement piece from 1999 is an extra pressing from Holloway’s Concerto for Double Bass and Small Orchestra written three years before. The concerto’s scoring is very spare; its soloist holds the principal line almost continuously; fashioning a solo sonata was more transcription than composition, though there is some new material too.

The third and final volume of the songs of Walter Jurmann focuses on the chansons he wrote during his time in Paris and the songs he wrote for his wife. Jurmann spent the pre-war years in Paris and, under pseudonyms, created many unforgettable melodies filled with French esprit. He wrote a number of musical gems for his wife Yvonne, published here for the first time. This volume also includes the famous songs about Los Angeles, Houston and Jurmann’s home town of Vienna.

Engelbert Humperdinck’s sister Adelheid wrote in a rhyming Hänsel and Gretel fairytale, which she performed with her daughters in the family. Her brother had contributed the four songs to it. While two of them also went into the later fairy tale opera, the Schlummerliedchen and Echo im Walde exist exclusively in this original version. The edition includes Humperdinck’s four original songs, published for the first time in edited form, as well as the text of Adelheid Wettes Liederspiel.

The ten settings of texts by the most famous Turkish poets were recorded for a CD in 2013 by Serenad Bağcan and Fazıl Say under the title İlk Şarkılar (First Songs). They form the melodic nucleus for numerous large-scale works by Say such as the Nâzım Oratorio and the Metin Altıok Requiem. Their melodic colour is reminiscent of French chansons and world music. The cycle can also be played by solo piano.

Fazıl Say reflects in his cycle Gezi Park the events in Istanbul in May and June 2013. Gezi Park 3, first composed as a ballad for soprano, piano and string orchestra, is a wordless plaintive meditation on the escalation of violence caused by the severe police response. The version for mezzo-soprano and piano can be performed alone or directly after the piano sonata Gezi Park 2.
