Akiko Yamane studied composition in Kyoto, and under Younghi Pagh-Paan in Bremen. In 2010 she won the Akutagawa Award for Music Composition. As well as writing works in the classical music tradition, she collaborates frequently with artists from different art forms including many visual artists. Yamane creates music using the concept of ‘visible sound’: though of course the sound itself is not visible, Yamane strives to enable the listener to trace the outlines of sound’s movement and feel its shapes, colors, textures and even the empty space around the sound.
