Barbara Heller was born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 1936 and studied composition with Hans Vogt in Mannheim and Harald Genzmer in Munich. As the co-founder of the Arbeitskreis Frau und Musik [working group for women and music] and editor of the Schott series Frauen komponieren [Women composers], she retained a special commitment to the music of female composers whose works were unjustly slow to achieve recognition. In her own compositions, Heller has always been on the search for the ‘essence of music’. To this end, she consistently avoids external effects and frequently dismantles melodies into their elementary components. ‘For me, composition entails discovering my own filter for the permanent flow of sounds, both internal and external.’
