Inspired by the fiftieth anniversary of the moon landing this year, my new work for chorus and orchestra uses favourite poems by Percy B. Shelley, Philip Larkin and Walt Whitman to explore the sense of wonder we identify with the moon and space. The piece tries to capture our experience of viewing the moon from Earth, and is also somehow about looking back at us here on Earth from above. I am delighted to work again with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, who I have come to know closely as their Composer in Residence, and for the first time with the wonderful BBC National Chorus of Wales. Es verleiht unserer Empfindung Ausdruck, wenn wir den Mond von der Erde aus betrachten und umgekehrt, wenn man von dort oben zu uns hinunter sieht. Mit großer Freude arbeite ich hier zum ersten Mal mit dem BBC National Chorus of Wales und zum wiederholten Mal mit dem BBC National Orchestra of Wales zusammen, das ich als Composer in Residence bereits näher kennenlernen durfte. A young woman is hired by a large internet company and forges a meteoric career. She is enthusiastic about the philosophy of sharing: ‘Secrets are lies, private spheres are theft’. She only gradually discovers that the ‘Circle’ is a realm from which it is difficult to escape. Ludger Vollmer’s new opera is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Dave Eggers. ‘In The Circle, we see a process continued to extremes, which we have already been able to observe throughout society: a digital development towards consumer-oriented totalitarianism. While Immanuel Kant in 1874 ascribed enlightenment as the ability “to exert one’s own intellect without the supervision of another individual” and Michel Foucault was still demanding “freedom from subjection”, “voluntary non-servitude” and “ref lective disobediance” in 1978, the yearning for coherence through the protective mass according to the large, nurturing, omniscient and protective “uterus” of the collective appears to be steadily gaining ever more ground.’ (Ludger Vollmer) Eine junge Frau wird von einem großen Internetkonzern angestellt und steigt schnell darin auf. Sie ist begeistert von der Philosophie des Teilens: „Geheimnisse sind Lügen, Privatsphäre ist Diebstahl“. Erst nach und nach stellt sie fest, dass der „Circle“ ein Kreis ist, dem man nur schwer entkommen kann. Ludger Vollmers neue Oper basiert auf Dave Eggers gleichnamigen Erfolgsroman. „In The Circle wird eine Entwicklung auf die Spitze getrieben, die wir bereits überall in unseren Gesellschaften beobachten können: eine Entwicklung zum digitalen, Konsum orientierten Totalitarismus. Während Immanuel Kant 1784 Aufklärung mit der Fähigkeit beschrieb, „sich seines Verstandes ohne Leitung eines Anderen zu bedienen“, und Michel Foucault
