Tuition scholarships are awarded in the amount of $7,000 during the junior and senior years. Prestigious leadership training and educational opportunities are funded through Sumners Foundation grants. Hatton W. Sumners represented Texas in the United States Congress from 1913 until his voluntary retirement in 1947. Congressman Sumners was recognized as one of the preeminent constitutional scholars on Capitol Hill and served as chairman of the powerful House Committee on the Judiciary from 1931 until returning to Texas. Established by Mr. Sumners in 1949, the Hatton W. Student registration fees and travel expenses are supported by Foundation grants. Sumners Scholars typically attend four events per year. The Sumners Scholarship Program was established at Schreiner in 1983. Since that time, 160 Schreiner students have been honored as Sumners Scholars and represent only one portion of the total Sumners network. Selection is competitive and determined by the strength of the application, resume, essay and personal interviews with Trustees of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation.

T he c o mpet itive app l i cat i o n p r o cess Sophomores in Schreiner’s undergraduate programs or sophomores transferring to Schreiner apply to become Hatton W. Sumners Scholars in January of the sophomore year. Preference is given to students who are majoring in political science, pre-law, history, government, business, economics, English or those who plan to teach social studies. All majors are accepted. Students from other program areas who have high academic achievement, are involved in campus activities, exhibit leadership and a strong sense of community responsibility are also considered.
