“And I said to my spirit When we become the enfolders of those orbs… shall we be fill’d and satisfied then? And my spirit said No, we but level that lift to pass and continue beyond.”

— Song of Myself Walt Whitman

Those words from Walt Whitman have echoed in my head for many years. They convey his sense of the “perpetual journey” we all travel through life in pursuit of our aspirations, and they seemed germane to this year’s edition of Momentum. One of the first things you will find in this tribute to our donors, with highlights of some of the many activities at Schreiner, is the diversity in the ways that both SU supporters and members of the university community express their passion for learning. We are all reminded that the search for knowledge that leads to a greater good is anything but static. How else do we explain a young woman interested in dance and kinesiology discovering a calling in the ministry? Or a busy banker and a retired engineer with no historic connections to Schreiner University volunteering to accept major roles in helping Hill Country residents achieve an education here? Or the bursting opportunities for Schreiner students to study internationally or to learn what citizenship can mean through internships in the nation’s capital and in small groups with world leaders?

Recently, a story was shared with me which captures why I have so enjoyed my 16 years here at Schreiner. The father of a student entering Schreiner’s pre-nursing program explained to one of our faculty why he supported her decision. As an executive in the UT-Health Science Center, he interviewed many nurses seeking employment. He reported that Schreiner graduates showed a keen sense of “patientcentered care” and “respect and dignity” for their patients, traits that do not always accrue to new nurses, even those with strong clinical skills. That sort of aspiration “to pass and continue beyond” excites me, and I have no doubt that it also excites and motivates you, supporters of this fine university and its students. On behalf of us all, thank you! If — when you have finished reading this year’s Momentum — you have an idea or an observation to share, I would be pleased to hear from you. “Someone recently asked me if all the blood, sweat, tears and late nights required in physical therapy school were worth it. I answered that I never thought there was any option except to finish because I knew it would be worth it in the end. I am certain that I will love doing this profession for the rest of my life!” — Ginny Temple, ‘11 PT, DPT (Physical Therapist, Doctor of Physical Therapy) Staff physical therapist Hill Country Memorial Hospital, Fredericksburg

MOMENTUM

Persistence and Zeal Pay Off for Young Dr. Temple When Ginny Temple arrived at Schreiner, she was certain that she would major in biology and then go to medical school. She planned to become a surgeon because “I have always been fascinated by the human body and how perfectly it was created to move and thrive.” After recognizing that required courses like botany and zoology did not fan her passion, Ginny began to reevaluate her intended academic and career paths. About the same time, she heard a physical therapist speak at a campus Medical Careers Club meeting. “She explained that movement specialists play a critical role in a patient’s recovery after an injury or illness—a life-changing role.“ Ginny remembers. Her faculty advisor, life science instructor Lesa Presley, helped Ginny change her major to exercise science and redirect her career compass towards physical therapy.

She completed an internship at Kerrville Physical Therapy and then worked there as a part-time employee. After graduating in 2011, Ginny built up an impressive volunteer resume’ doing physical therapy internships for 18 months while applying to graduate schools. She graduated from the Austin campus of the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences this past April with her doctorate in physical therapy. “When I found out I had passed my final test, my reaction was marked by tears and prayers of thanksgiving!” Ginny says, still filled with wonder. And—as life often does—her professional network led to an interview in Fredericksburg. One of her mentors at the San Antonio clinic where she served as a volunteer had relocated to Hill Country Memorial Hospital. Remembering Ginny’s passion and work ethic, he offered her a job. Now, Ginny joyfully spends two days in the hospital and three days in the outpatient clinic each week, helping people recover from injuries…. giving them encouragement and hope…and bringing honor to Schreiner.

Dr. Renee Moore World Entrepreneur Passes the Torch by John Sniffen

“Several years after graduating from Schreiner, when I was trying to decide whether to accept an offer to move to Germany, Dr. Stevens reminded me of a time when I was working in the Schreiner College laboratory, and I had told him I never wanted to move from Kerrville,“Renee Moore, PhD, remembers. I had planned to use my biology degree and stay in Kerrville forever. “He reminded me of his reply: ‘Well, that might be a little bit of a limiting mindset, a bit small. You might want to consider other options.’ Within six weeks I sold my house in Austin, packed and flew to Germany. I could not even speak the language. Shortly thereafter I set up my first company, which in a five-year span I grew into 10 multimillion-euro companies in nine countries. I couldn’t have done that if I had been living in Kerrville, Texas.”

Renee sold her companies, which helped pharmaceutical companies firms operate profitably successfully in emerging world markets, for a handsome profit. In 2012, the busy alumna founded Business Beyond Borders, a company dedicated to helping startups and small and medium-sized firms become profitable by successfully positioning and marketing their products and services on both local and international levels. She lives and works from a renovated medieval cottage in the wine country of Southern Germany, from where she travels the globe working with her clients. Last May, she presented the 2015 commencement address and offered three strategies for success to her fellow alumni:

Examine your mindset ; stop playing small.

Be the expert; identify the thing that you do best.

Find what’s wrong, and make it right.

“Everything I learned about biology I learned from Dr. Fred Stevens.” 8

Andrew Van Hyfte

Chasing the New Design Utopia by John Sniffen

Andrew Van Hyfte admits he has an advantage. Holding dual U.S.-Belgian citizenship from birth, it is easier for him than most U.S. citizens to work in Europe. That aside, he has used his skills and professional connections adroitly to, as he puts it “chase the next design co-working utopia.” Van Hyfte,’07, who holds a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design, recently moved to Stockholm to begin graduate study in interactive art direction with Hyper Island, renowned in the design industry as a top digital institution.

He credits Dr. David Smith’s emphasis on partnering with industry professionals for that internship and much of what has followed. Smith, professor of graphic design and dean of the Cailloux School of Professional Studies, maintains contact and communication with alumni working in the design field, and encourages students to network with them and others in the profession.

Earlier in 2015, Andrew finished a contract project for Booking.com in Amsterdam, creating the overall brand architecture and visual identity for Booking Now (an application that allows travelers a new way to reserve accommodations on their smart phones and tablets). How did he get from Schreiner to Stockholm in eight years?

“A conversation with a Schreiner graduate led to the internship and eventually being hired as a full-time designer,” says Andrew. When the 2008 financial crisis forced Morgan-Mohon to downsize, Van Hyfte moved to Austin. Professional connections led to becoming a senior brand designer on Dell’s global brand creative team. Dell went private in 2014, and he took the opportunity to work in Europe.

While still in college, Van Hyfte had an internship at Morgan-Mohon, a brand and design firm in Fredericksburg. “My exposure to the creative director and design team at Morgan-Mohon crystallized my idea of how I wanted my design life to feel like,” he says.

The son of a Belgian father and an American mother, Andrew is able to bypass restrictions and requirements that other Americans face. He interviewed with three companies, spent time in Stockholm and Berlin, then moved to Amsterdam to work for Booking.com. His life is just as he hoped.

“ Dr. Smith helped me understand the power of internships.”

As an undergraduate, I was fortunate to have participated in National Model United Nations (NMUN). It was a wonderful experience that gave me a greater appreciation for the many challenges diplomats face when conducting international negotiations. I appreciate working for a student-centered university where high impact teaching practices like NMUN are appreciated and supported with grants such as the Elmore Whitehurst Award for Creative Teaching.

Michael Grillo, assistant professor of political science, will take a delegation of students to New York City next spring to compete in the National Model United Nations (NMUM) Conference. Eight lucky students will join 5,000 others from 21 countries as they tackle a variety of real-time international issues. “Students from all majors are welcome to apply for the conference,” says Grillo. “I will be recruiting ambitious people who have an interest in world politics.

— Michael Grillo

These students may have to step outside of their comfort zones by potentially playing the role of a country with different world views. They may also need to argue controversial topics such as nuclear proliferation, chemical weapons and human rights.” Students will have the fall semester to hone their skills in public speaking, negotiation, thinking on their feet and stretching their perspectives. Such skills, says Michael, will serve them the rest of their lives, in any careers they choose.

To pay for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at the United Nations, Grillo applied for and received the Elmore Whitehurst Award for Creative Teaching. (page 13) 12

The Whitehurst Legacy: Outlasting Life Itself The Elmore Whitehurst Award for Creative Teaching provides $2,000 each year to a Schreiner faculty member with a new concept for deepening students’ learning experiences. The Hatton W. Sumners Foundation of Dallas created the award in 1986 to honor Whitehurst, a devoted friend of Schreiner and a charter member of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation Board of Trustees. Whitehurst served as Congressman Sumners’ secretary (also as clerk of the Committee on the Judiciary) in Washington, D.C. during the first half of the 20th century. When Judge Whitehurst and his dear wife, Ruth, moved to Kerrville in the early 80s, they inspired the Sumners trustees to help Schreiner make the transition from a junior

college to baccalaureate status. The foundation is dedicated to the development of leaders with a sense of community responsibility, and it has played a major part in Schreiner’s life ever since its first gift more than 30 years ago. With an endowment of $1.2 million, the Sumners fund at SU has assisted 196 students in the past and now underwrites eight prestigious scholarships of $7,000 each year. A “hands-on” foundation, a group of Sumners board members takes part in a beloved campus tradition. They visit campus every spring to encourage current Sumners Scholars in a banquet setting and to interview and elect four new ones.

In addition, the Sumners Foundation awards an annual stipend to a graduating senior, the Elmore Whitehurst Award for Excellence in Learning. This $2,000 grant for graduate school assists Megan Batey from Canyon Lake this year. She has just started a two-year master’s degree program at Texas State University’s School of Health Administration and hopes to be be chief operating officer for Methodist Healthcare some day.

Fundraising in a Nutshell

1,329 friends provide $2,855,177 in gifts and pledges in 2014-15 needed assistance for our BSN program. SU gratefully received other operating gifts to support athletics, campus ministry, Learning Support Services (LSS), the choir, academics and other important programs.

The people of the Hill Country are more generous than any group I have ever seen. They take care of their own and they take pride in being long-time supporters. Besides, how can anyone say no to such a powerful cause? Together, we are making higher education possible for hundreds of students. Besides that, our quality of life depends upon welleducated and thoughtful young people who will follow us as community leaders. — Volunteer Chairman Glenn Andrew

Schreiner’s longest-running fund-raising tradition is, hands down, the Hill Country College Fund (HCCF). This fall marks the 38th year of the annual campaign to raise tuition assistance for students from Kerr and surrounding counties. These counties include Bandera, Edwards, Gillespie, Kendall, Kimble, Real and Gillespie. When development officers at other colleges in the state hear about the HCCF’s strong performance year after year, they marvel at such stellar results. The answer? Hill Country spirit! Roy Thompson, president of Texas Hill Country Bank, is vice chairman and will lead the business division. Mike Ezer, senior estate planner at Stewardship Advisory Group, has agreed to recruit volunteers to work in the community division, calling on individuals. And Magaret Jobes, vice president of Centennial Bank, will lead the advanced division, which seeks the major gifts early in the campaign.

As we move to the public phase of the campaign next year, the focus will be on providing greater access to a Schreiner education by building scholarship endowments and by securing support to enrich our academic programs.

The Annual Fund Schreiner’s biggest challenge for operating funds is student financial aid. About 98% of our students depend upon scholarships, grants, work-study positions and loans in order to stay in school. SU helps the best it can by distributing more than $11 million in financial assistance each year. Last year’s largest single gift for operations ($250,000) came from Methodist Healthcare Ministries of San Antonio, providing much

“Schreiner’s ‘Fulfilling the Promise’ Campaign is not public yet, but we are extremely pleased to have received almost $30 million in gifts since June 1, 2012. Outright and planned gifts for all purposes count towards our comprehensive campaign goal.” Endowment Schreiner is always seeking gifts for our endowment, the permanent “savings account” that enables SU to expand programs and scholarships with confidence that growing sources of income will support them. SU was blessed this past fiscal year to receive several consummated bequests and to be named the future beneficiary of new estate plans. In addition, several families completed five-year commitments to establish new scholarships. Please see page 21 for a list of newly established endowments and page 34 for the names of new members of the Schreiner Oaks Society, good friends who have now included SU in their estate plans. Schreiner’s friends make this university stronger every year, and we honor each gift, large and small and inbetween.

Traditionally, fund-raising management considers the “three-legged stool” a good model. That is, an organization like Schreiner seeks about a third of its gifts to support the current program (annual fund), a third to build and maintain facilities and property (capital), and a third to fortify long-term strength by increasing permanent funds (endowment).Year-to-year, the actual percentages rarely follow this ideal, but the three priorities of annual, capital and endowment gifts remain concurrent priorities. 2015 E D I T I O N

Conference Peers Honor Macosko

Golf Coach of the Year by John Sniffen

Ron Macosko’s peers in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) have named him coach-of-the-year for both men’s and women’s golf. Schreiner’s director of athletics and head golf coach led the SU golf teams to stellar seasons. The Mountaineer men secured the 2015 SCAC championship by 11 strokes in April, after winning six of the nine tournaments in which they played during the academic year. It is the men’s third consecutive conference championship. It is Ron’s second consecutive SCAC coach-of-the-year honor for men’s golf and his first for women’s golf. “It is humbling to be honored by the SCAC golf coaches, but our players deserve all of the credit for our success,” says Macosko. “We get to work day-to-day with talented student-athletes who allow us to help them bring the best out of their abilities.”

On the women’s side, Ron and his wife, Anna, led the team to their first SCAC championship, overtaking defending champion Trinity University and winning by 11 strokes over the nationally ranked Tigers. It was the Schreiner women’s first conference title since 2010. Looking toward the 2014-15 golf season, Macosko says the Mountaineers will be young with many incoming freshmen, “but it will be exciting to see how the teams develop. I think we may have the best years of our program coming up.” Macosko has been director of athletics at Schreiner since 2005. Anna AckerMacosko is a key part of the Macosko coaching duo for the Mountaineer golf teams. A retired professional golfer and former NCAA D-I All-American, she is also a teaching professional at The Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville.

“Going to Schreiner was a great choice for me, because I have excelled academically and athletically. I got to know my professors, met almost everyone on campus, easily became involved with extra-curricular activities, got to know the president of the university, had the opportunity to play collegiate golf, and felt a part of a family. ”

Athletic and Event Center Starts 2015 with a Bang Fifteen years of planning and development culminated in the January dedication of the $11 million Athletic and Event Center. Beginning with a preceremony tailgate party, the large band of students, employees and well-wishers was appropriately rowdy for the Mountaineer women’s and men’s basketball games that followed. Many gifts, large and small, made the center a reality. A long-anticipated “first” was using the new center for commencement May. The center’s opening is a major milestone in the campus master plan to address students’ health, fitness, recreation and athletic needs. The center includes training facilities, locker and meeting rooms and coaches’ offices, as well as provides space for intramural athletics and large all-campus activities. Schreiner especially looks forward to hosting Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournaments and regional high school sports contests in the new facility. When not in use by the university, the Athletic and Event Center is available for community events, such as the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Expo.

New Tech Chief Never Stops

When Kasra Hafezi, director of enterprise technology services (ETS), arrived on campus last spring, he brought with him 17 years of experience in an academic setting. At St. John’s University Law School in New York City, Kasra pioneered exam-taking on laptops and designed all the “smart classroom” technology to enhance students’ interactive learning processes. Consisting mostly of Schreiner grads and students, the ETS team already has a long list of accomplishments. These include rolling out a new generation of communication systems, transforming email to Microsoft’s latest Office365 platform, and enabling the Schreiner community to communicate and collaborate with all Microsoft applications from anywhere in the world. In May, the team produced live-streaming capabilities for the first commencement in the new Athletic and Event Center— a thrilling experience for 239 families who were able to watch online as their family members graduated. Kasra and his tireless team are now enhancing the student recruitment process and working with the Campus Information Systems Committee to identify appropriate resources for teaching the digital age Millennials. One of Kasra’s long-term goals is transforming the desktop computing environment to a virtual desktop infrastructure, where—according to the new tech chief — “we may never have to replace a computer again (or at least not for the next 10 to 15 years)!”

Loving Remembrances Create A Powerful Gift Stephen Furbush, ’98, always loved to be around kids, remember his parents,Louise “Weezie” and Bill Furbush of Hunt, TX. “He didn’t take a direct route to becoming a teacher,” Bill laughs, “but he finished at Schreiner and became a very happy teacher and coach. He especially liked to teach fourth grade!” When Stephen contracted a rare form of cancer in 2002, he battled mightily and was able to return to teaching at Hunt School for a couple of years. In 2006, however, when he was just 43, Steve lost the battle, leaving a profound loss for his family and his students.

A few years after his parents established a memorial scholarship in his memory, “Forever Furbush,” an interesting tradition, took on a life of its own. Steve’s wife, Jane, his brother Billy, and his sister Anne (Curran)—along with many of his friends from high school and college— wanted to find a way to help the scholarship grow. They invented “The Furbash” at the Roddy Tree Ranch near Hunt, a mostlyannual party where all who attend hear good music and have an opportunity to make a contribution of any size. No pressure, just fond memories. Schreiner has received more than 111 gifts for this named scholarship, and the fund now surpasses $91,000!

Schreiner Oaks Society helps SU build a strong future

T

he Schreiner Oaks Society recognizes those friends who have included Schreiner in their estate plans. While most of these commitments will not be fulfilled for many years, our entire learning community is encouraged by the knowledge that Schreiner’s financial future grows stronger by each gift. If you have included Schreiner in your will or other means—or if you would like to know how to do so—please call 830-792-7205. You do not have to disclose specific details of your plans to qualify as a member of the Schreiner Oaks Society.

I grew up in the Texas Hill Country town of Hunt where my parents, Velma & Kenneth Jones owned the resort hotel, Heart O’ the Hills Inn. I attended Tivy & admired Schreiner “Institute”. And the Rev. William Logan was my pastor at First Presbyterian. So it was with a great deal of pleasure that I was recently inducted into the Schreiner Oaks Society. And my eventual estate gifts will support the William Logan Library!

As a member of the Schreiner community, • I will commit myself to the pursuit of knowledge with personal integrity and academic honesty. • I will support a culture of diversity by respecting the rights of those who differ from myself. • I will contribute to the scholarly heritage left by those who preceded me and work to leave this a better place for those who follow. • I will Enter with Hope, and Leave with Achievement. From “the Schreiner Promise,” spoken each year at Convocation, marking the beginning of a new school year.
