LEFT BRAIN? RIGHT BRAIN? Colby Adolph, a May 2013 graduate heading to Purdue University to earn her doctorate in organic chemistry, has handed off her research project to Daniel Hicks, a junior psychology major from Mount Vernon.

Dr. Danette Vines, associate professor of chemistry, said “Daniel is the third student to take over this research project, ‘Novel Gringnards: New methodology toward an efficient route to fumagillin.’ It’s rare to find a psychology major who knows so much about chemistry.”

While Hicks continues to work on the research project, he is also tutoring students in organic chemistry.

“I think this type of thing is completely unique to Schreiner,” Hicks says. “Other universities offer only exclusive programs instead of crossing disciplines. It definitely benefits the students here.”

Creative Intuitive Passionate DESIGN QUEEN Shauna Dodds. a 2002 SU graduate, and her sister Sarah founded Backstage Design Studio in 2004 in Austin, and concentrated their efforts on design for the Texas Music Industry.

In 2012, they were honored with a Grammy Nomination for Best Recording Package for their album cover on Reckless Kelly’s “Good Luck & True Love.” The design also earned them a Lone Star Music Award, 2 Gold ADDYS (Austin and District 10) and a spot in the 2nd Annual AIGA Texas Show.

“I love getting to wake up in the morning, and know that when I get to my desk, I’ll be doing what I was born to do on projects for some of the coolest people alive, with one of my favorite people on the planet (my sister), in the prettiest little city.”

Dr. William Woods’ Spring 2013 Reacting to the Past class not only got to test his new game, “Victory of Death!: The Texas War of Independence,” but they visited the Alamo to inform their re-imagining of the central event.

As they develop their characters, they learn to take on the mantel of leadership, persuade others, think critically, engage with big ideas and improve their intellectual and academic skills.

Dr. Charles Salter, chair of the Business department, is one of many distinguished faculty at Schreiner University. He has taught at SU since 2005, and in 2012 he delivered the keynote speech, “Ethical Leadership: The transforming power of goodwill” at The Economics, Finance, MIS & International Business Conference in London, England.

Before starting his teaching career, Dr. Salter worked in the corporate world—real-world learning he applies in the classroom.

Dr. Chris Distel, assistant professor of biology, one of Schreiner’s Signature Programs, regularly brings his students out into the field to study Hill Country flora and fauna and their habitats.
