MFL at Ashurst Wood Primary
All children in KS2 at Ashurst Wood will have the opportunity to cultivate an interest in French and make good progress in developing their language skills. There is a clear progression throughout the Key stage and each year group are encouraged to listen, respond and enjoy experiencing learning another language. The curriculum provides a balance of spoken and written activities to allow our children to develop a strong foundation for further language learning in KS3.
Our curriculum encourages the children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Learning a new language should be fun, so children will use role play to build their confidence and sing songs in French, which helps to master intonation and pronunciation. Learning a new language instils self-confidence and provides opportunities to learn about other cultures and countries.
At Ashurst Wood we use Primary Languages to support the delivery of our curriculum.
MFL at Ashurst Wood Primary
At Ashurst Wood, the children learn French in numerous ways. There is an emphasis on speaking and listening; however, as the children progress through KS2 they will have more opportunities to develop their written French.
MFL at Ashurst Wood Primary
At each stage (Y3 is Stage 1, Y6 is stage 4) children cover the core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The children have a French lesson each week with a different unit focus each half term. (see below)
Assessment of MFL
Teachers make ongoing assessments through observation and conversations with the children.

Singing songs in French is fun.
Would like the opportunity to link up with pupils in a French school. I would like to ask them about their school day and what they do at weekends.
