Die Manuskripte müssen gemäss den Autorenrichtlinien der Studia (www.sagw.ch/de/ philosophie/Publikationen/studia-philosophica. html) bis zum September jeden Jahres bei der Redaktion eingereicht werden. Die Auswahl der Beiträge erfolgt nach einem doppelblinden Begutachtungsverfahren (peer review).

La Revue Suisse de Philosophie, Studia philosophica, paraît une fois par année en septembre et publie en français, allemand, italien et anglais des articles scientifiques, des comptes rendus ainsi que des débats. Tous les deux ans sont publiés les actes du Symposium de la Société suisse de philosophie. Les propositions de contribution doivent correspondre aux directives des Studia (www.sagw.ch/de/philosophie/ Publikationen/studia-philosophica.html) et sont à soumettre chaque année jusqu’à fin septembre. La sélection des contributions est effectuée par la rédaction à la suite d’un processus d’expertise par deux pairs anonymes (peer review).

La Rivista Filosofica Svizzera, Studia philosophica, appare una volta all’anno a settembre e pubblica articoli scientifici, recensioni e dibattiti in italiano, tedesco, francese e inglese. Ogni due anni viene pubblicata nella rivista una selezione delle relazioni presentate nel quadro del Simposio della Società filosofica svizzera. I manoscritti devono corrispondere alle direttive degli Studia (www.sagw.ch/de/ philosophie/Publikationen/studia-philosophica.html) e devono essere sottomessi entro la fine dell’anno precedente. La selezione dei contributi è effettuata dalla redazione dopo un processo di valutazione a doppia anonimizzazione (peer review).

The Swiss Journal of Philosophy, Studia philosophica, appears in September every year. It contains academic articles, reviews and debates in German, French, Italian and English. Every second year it includes a selection of papers presented to the symposium of the Swiss Philosophical Society.

The manuscripts have to be in accordance with the editorial guidelines of the Studia (www.sagw.ch/ philosophie/portrait.html) and have to be submitted to the editors until September of every year. The contributions are selected on the basis of a peer review procedure.

Editorial Auf Beschluss der Schweizerischen Philosophischen Gesellschaft (SPG) werden die Studia philosophica ab 2016 nicht mehr als Jahrbuch, sondern als Zeitschrift herausgegeben. Unter dem Titel Schweizerische Zeitschrift für Philosophie erscheinen die Studia weiterhin einmal im Jahr, sie beinhalten wissenschaftliche Artikel, Rezensionen und Debatten auf Deutsch, Französisch, Italienisch und Englisch. Wie bisher werden alle zwei Jahre die Beiträge des Symposiums der SPG in der Zeitschrift veröffentlicht. Die nicht dem Symposium gewidmeten Nummern werden frei gestaltet. Alle in der Schweiz arbeitenden Philosophen, aber auch ausländische Kolleginnen und Kollegen sind eingeladen, Artikel zu ihren philosophischen Themenbereichen einzureichen, diese können sowohl Fragen der Geschichte der Philosophie wie auch aktuelle Debatten betreffen. Es besteht ausserdem die Möglichkeit, als GasteditorIn die Gestaltung eines Themenschwerpunktes zu übernehmen. Wer sich dafür interessiert, ist gebeten, den Redakteuren eine kurze Beschreibung des vorgeschlagenen Themas und die Liste der einzuladenden Autoren zukommen zu lassen.

Alle künftig in den Studia veröffentlichten Beiträge werden einem Peer-Review-Verfahren unterzogen. Die Manuskripte müssen gemäss den Autorenrichtlinien der Studia (www.sagw.ch/philosophie/portrait.html) bis Ende September jeden Jahres bei der Redaktion eingereicht werden. Es ist vorgesehen, den Rezensionsteil der Studia auszubauen. Informationen über Veröffentlichungen und Besprechungen nimmt die Redaktion darum gerne entgegen.

Wir hoffen mit diesem neuen Format der Studia einer reichen Palette philosophischer Stimmen aus der Schweiz und dem Ausland eine interessante Plattform zu bieten.

Editorial Suivant la décision de la Société suisse de philosophie, les Studia philosophica ne sont plus publiées à partir de 2016 sous forme d’un annuaire, mais paraissent désormais sous le titre Revue Suisse de la Philosophie. La parution de la revue sera annuelle et contiendra des articles scientifiques, des compte rendus et des débats en français, allemand, italien et anglais. Comme précédemment, les ­Studia publient tous les deux ans les Actes du symposium de la Société suisse de philosophie, les autres numéros étant planifiés librement et en fonction des propositions des auteurs. Tous les philosophes travaillant en Suisse ainsi que les collègues étrangers sont ainsi invités à soumettre des articles issus des différents domaines de la philosophie, concernant aussi bien l’histoire de la philosophie que les débats actuels. Des propositions de rubrique thématique seront également considérées, dans lequel cas les intéressés feront parvenir aux rédacteurs une courte description du projet et une liste des auteurs invités.

Tous les textes publiés dans les Studia sont soumis à un processus d’expertise par des pairs anonymes (peer review). Les manuscrits doivent correspondre aux directives des Studia (www.sagw.ch/philosophie/portrait.html) et être envoyés chaque année jusqu’à la fin septembre. Comme il est prévu d’élargir la rubrique consacrée aux comptes-rendus, la rédaction considèrera les annonces de publications et les discussions des parutions récentes qui lui seront soumises pour publication.

Avec ce nouveau format des Studia, nous espérons offrir au large évantail des voix philosophiques en Suisse et à l’étranger un forum privilégié pour s’exprimer.

Einleitung «Jedes psychische Phänomen ist durch die Richtung auf ein Objekt charakterisiert», behauptet Brentano und bringt am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts den Begriff der Intentionalität wieder in die philosophischen Debatten ein, indem er mit seiner Hilfe die Psychologie zu reformieren und als autonome philosophische Disziplin zu konstituieren sucht. Dieser Rückgriff auf den Begriff der Intentiona­lität, dem auch Brentanos Schüler verpflichtet waren, bildete den Ausgangspunkt zahlreicher Diskussionen zur Natur des Geistes, die sowohl die Möglichkeit einer Naturalisierung des Geistes als auch seine Grundstruktur hinterfragten. Zu Brentanos Zeiten wurde die Naturalisierung durch die Forschungen in der experimentalen Psychologie, der Physiologie und dem Behaviorismus genährt, heute sind es die Ergebnisse der Kognitionswissenschaften, die ihr neue Nahrung geben.

Auch wenn die Intentionalität ursprünglich als Unterscheidungsmerkmal der mentalen Akte diskutiert wurde, ist sie doch nicht ihr einziges Merkmal. In der Tat behauptet schon Brentano, dass die mentalen Akte auch innerlich wahrgenommen werden, wodurch ihnen Subjektivität verliehen wird. Diese doppelte Charakterisierung der psychischen Phänomene als intentional und subjektiv hat mehrere für die Philosophie wichtige Debatten im 20. und zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ausgelöst. In der Philosophie des Geistes sei an die Frage nach der Beziehung zwischen intentionalen Inhalten und subjektivem Charakter der mentalen Akte erinnert, die u.a. von Terence Horgan und John Tienson (2002) neu aufgeworfen wurde und eine reiche Literatur hervorgebracht hat. Während einige Autoren beide Aspekte als eigenständig ansehen und bloss den einen dem anderen unterzuordnen suchen, akzeptieren andere nicht-begriffliche Inhalte und suggerieren damit, dass der eine Aspekt auf den anderen zu reduzieren sei.

Die neueren Diskussionen zur Phänomenologie des Geistes und der Affekte (David Pitt, Jesse Prinz, Charles Siewert, Michelle Montague) zeigen, dass diese doppelte Charakterisierung Folgen für die Beschreibung aller Typen mentaler Akte hat, sowohl für die sensorischen wie auch die kognitiven oder emotionalen.

In der Erkenntnistheorie werden einige der den kognitiven Akten auf Grund ihrer Reflexivität zugeschriebenen Eigenschaften wie die Transparenz, die Unfehlbarkeit und die Unkorrigierbarkeit in Frage gestellt und damit die Autorität der ersten Person bezweifelt, die seit Descartes oft als selbstverständlich erachtet wird (Alvin Goldman, Eric Schwitzgebel). In der Philosophie der Gefühle erscheint das Problem in Form der Frage, ob es sich bei den mentalen affektiven Akten um durch ihre intentionalen Objekte determinierte kognitive Phänomene handelt oder eher um Wahrnehmungen der am Leib erfolgenden Reaktionen

(Peter Goldie, António Damásio). In der Ontologie stellt sich die Frage nach der Natur der intentionalen Gegenstände und nach der Art und Weise, wie diese bestimmt sind durch die Subjektivität desjenigen, der sie denkt (ontologische Abhängigkeit, Konstitution, etc.). Im Gegenzug wird die Natur des Trägers der Subjektivität ihrerseits wieder problematisiert.

Diese Debatten zur Natur von Intentionalität und Subjektivität und zu deren Verhältnis haben auch Auswirkungen auf andere philosophische Themenbereiche.

Man denke nur an die in der Sozialphilosophie stark diskutierte Frage nach den Identifikationskriterien von kollektiver Intentionalität und nach den Möglichkeiten, diese adäquat zu beschreiben. In der philosophischen Anthropologie beruft man sich auf aktuelle Forschungen in der evolutionären Anthropologie und der Entwicklungspsychologie, in denen einige die geteilte Intentionalität als Unterscheidungsmerkmal in der Tier-Mensch-Debatte behaupten (Michael Tomasello) und andere die Handlungsintentionalität auf den höheren Entwicklungsstufen durch Verhaltensschemen niederer Stufen determiniert sehen.

Der vorliegende Band der Studia philosophica nähert sich diesen Debatten unter drei thematischen Gesichtspunkten. Der erste Schwerpunkt betrifft die phänomenale und affektive Intentionalität. Christian Barth und Guillaume Fréchette diskutieren die Frage der phänomenalen Intentionalität – die einem phänomenalen Erlebnis eigene Intentionalität – und den Platz, den diese in den Schriften Descartes und Brentanos einnimmt. In seinem Text «Descartes on Intentionality, Conscientia, and Phenomenal Consciousness» zeigt Barth, inwieweit der phänomenale Charakter der Erfahrung ein integraler Bestandteil des von Descartes entwickelten Begriffs der Intentionalität darstellt, auch wenn letzterer die Idee einer phänomenalen Intentionalität nicht teilt. In «Brentano on Sensory Intentionality» zeigt Fréchette, dass es möglich ist, Brentanos Konzeption der Empfindungen als einen Beitrag zu seiner These vom grundlegenden Charakter der phänomenalen Intentionalität zu lesen.

Laurent Cesalli und Federico Lauria diskutieren in ihren Beiträgen das Problem der intentionalen affektiven Phänomene. Unter dem Titel «Anton Marty on Emotions, their Object and Content» analysiert Cesalli, wie die vom Schweizer Schüler Brentanos entwickelte Theorie der sprachlichen Bedeutung zu einer Theorie der affektiven Intentionalität führt, in der auf produktive Weise Elemente mittelalterlicher und österreichischer Philosophie verbunden werden. Lauria entwirft dagegen in «‘L’œil du devoir-être’ – La conception déontique de l’inten­ tionnalité du désir et les modes intentionnels» ein Modell der Intentionalität der Lust, das seine Quelle in der phänomenologischen Tradition Brentanos hat und die Probleme funktionalistischer Konzeptionen zu überwinden sucht.

Der zweite Schwerpunkt handelt von der Intentionalität in Wahrnehmung und Handlung. Der Ausgangspunkt Gianfranco Soldatis in «Intentionale Inexistenz

und Bewusstsein» ist Brentanos These von der Intentionalität als charakteris­tischer Eigenschaft der bewussten Erfahrung, dabei entwickelt er eine kritische Haltung gegenüber repräsentationalistischen Interpretationen und verteidigt die These, dass die in der Wahrnehmung gegebenen Qualitäten keine intrinsischen Eigenschaften der Erfahrung sein können. Hamid Taieb teilt diese Kritik am Repräsentationalismus in seinem Text «Husserl et P. F. Strawson sur les qualités secondes», der interessante Parallelen zwischen den von beiden Autoren entwickelten Darstellungen der sekundären Qualitäten aufzeigt. Javier Kalhat stellt in «Pea­ cocke on Depiction and the Visual Field» die Frage der ästhetischen Wahrnehmung in den Mittelpunkt und kritisiert den von Christopher Peacocke erarbeiteten Ansatz zur Darstellung (depiction). Schliesslich fragt Frank Esken in seinem Beitrag «Der schwierige Begriff der Handlungsintentionalität», inwiefern die von Searle diskutierten handlungsimmanenten Absichten den in der Entwicklungspsychologie beobachteten und analysierten Phänomenen wirklich gerecht werden.

Der dritte Thementeil gilt einem Exkurs in die Geschichte und widmet sich den Debatten zwischen Philosophie und Psychologie, die am Ende des 19., Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts stattfanden, wobei deren Rolle bei der Entwicklung der Forschungen zur Intentionalität und Subjektivität im Mittelpunkt stehen. So diskutieren Carole Maigné in ihrem mit einem Zitat Herbarts betitelten Text «Penser le moi avec acuité signifie réfuter l’idéalisme» und David Romand in «La théorie herbartienne de la représentation (Vorstellung): une dialectique de l’acte et du contenu» die bisher wenig beachteten Beiträge dieses Denkers zu den aufgeworfenen Fragen. Während Maigné sich auf die Rolle konzentriert, die die Begriffe der Intuition und der Apperzeption in der Herbartschen Thematisierung der Subjektivität spielen, versucht Romand in Herbarts Theorie der Vorstellung die Ideen herauszuarbeiten, die die späteren in der Brentano-Schule geführten Diskussionen um den Begriff der Intentionalität schon erahnen lassen. Der Schlussartikel von Janette Friedrich, «Philosophie mit oder ohne Psychologie?» stellt zwei kürzlich in französischer Sprache erschienene Sammelbände vor, die die zum gleichen Zeitpunkt geführten Debatten um den Psychologismus und die empirische Psychologie Brentanos rekonstruieren, wobei die dabei aufgeworfenen theore­tischen Fragen und ihre Bedeutung für die hier diskutierte Thematik besonders beleuchtet werden.

Introduction «Tout phénomène psychique est à propos d’un objet», s’exclame Brentano, réintroduisant, à la fin du 19e siècle, le concept d’intentionnalité en philosophie afin de refonder la psychologie et de promouvoir celle-ci comme discipline philosophique autonome. Cette réintroduction du concept par Brentano et son école est à la source de nombreuses polémiques sur la nature de l’esprit, tant en ce qui a trait à sa naturalisation qu’à sa structure fondamentale, qui ont été nourries et enrichies à l’époque par les recherches de disciplines comme la psychologie expérimentale, la physiologie et le béhaviorisme, et aujourd’hui particulièrement par les sciences cognitives.

Si l’intentionnalité est introduite alors comme un trait distinctif des actes mentaux, ce trait n’est pas le seul: en effet, Brentano et plusieurs de ses héritiers considèrent qu’en plus d’être intentionnels, les actes mentaux sont perçus intérieurement, ce qui leur confère leur subjectivité. Cette double caractérisation des actes mentaux est à l’origine de plusieurs débats centraux de la philosophie des 20ème et 21ème siècles. En philosophie de l’esprit, on pensera à la question de la relation entre le contenu intentionnel et le caractère subjectif des actes mentaux, réactualisée notamment par Terence Horgan et John Tienson en 2002 et depuis à l’origine d’une littérature foisonnante: là où certains veulent subsumer l’un sous l’autre, d’autres, qui acceptent les contenus non conceptuels, suggèrent plutôt de réduire l’un à l’autre.

Cette double caractérisation a une portée sur tous les types d’actes mentaux, tant sensoriels que cognitifs ou affectifs, comme le montre les débats récents autour de la phénoménologie cognitive et affective (David Pitt, Jesse Prinz, Charles Siewert, Michelle Montague). En épistémologie, plusieurs philosophes remettent en cause certaines des propriétés particulières attribuées aux actes cognitifs réflexifs comme la transparence, l’infaillibilité et l’incorrigibilité, et questionnent du coup l’autorité de la première personne, souvent prise pour acquise depuis Descartes (Alvin Goldman, Eric Schwitzgebel). En philosophie des émotions, elle se traduit dans la question de savoir si les actes mentaux affectifs sont des états cognitifs déterminés par leurs objets intentionnels ou s’ils ne sont pas plutôt des perceptions de changements corporels (Peter Goldie, António Damásio). En ontologie, elle intervient notamment au niveau du problème de la nature des objets intentionnels et du type de dépendance que ceux-ci peuvent avoir envers la subjectivité qui les pense – corrélativement, la question de la nature du porteur de cette subjectivité devient alors problématique.

Les débats sur cette double caractérisation, mais aussi sur l’intentionnalité et la subjectivité prises individuellement ont aussi des répercussions dans d’autres domaines d’investigation en philosophie. On pensera à l’incidence directe qu’ils ont en philosophie sociale sur les critères d’identification qu’on voudra utiliser pour déterminer s’il y a une intentionnalité collective et ce en quoi elle consiste.

Dans le domaine de l’anthropologie philosophique, ces débats se jouent notamment dans les recherches actuelles en anthropologie évolutionniste et en psychologie développementale, où certains identifient l’intentionnalité commune et col­ lective comme le trait distinctif dans le débat homme-animal (Michael Tomasello), et où d’autres proposent de voir l’intentionnalité de l’action comme déterminée, à un niveau supérieur, par des schèmes comportementaux d’un niveau inférieur.

Le présent volume des Studia philosophica examine certains de ces débats en partant de trois grands thèmes. Le premier est celui de l’intentionnalité phénoménale et affective. Christian Barth et Guillaume Fréchette se penchent plus particulièrement sur la question de l’intentionnalité phénoménale et sur la place qui lui est consacrée chez Descartes et Brentano. Dans «Descartes on Intentionality, Conscientia, and Phenomenal Consciousness», Barth montre comment le caractère phénoménal de l’expérience est une partie intégrale du concept d’intentionnalité de Descartes, bien que ce dernier ne défende pas la thèse de l’intentionnalité phénoménale. Dans «Brentano on Sensory Intentionality», Fréchette expose en quoi la conception brentanienne des sensations peut être vue comme une contribution à la thèse du caractère fondamental de l’intentionnalité phénoménale.

Dans leurs contributions, Laurent Cesalli et Federico Lauria discutent des phénomènes intentionnels affectifs. Dans «Anton Marty on Emotions, their Object and Content», Cesalli analyse comment la théorie de signification linguistique développée par l’élève Suisse de Brentano contribue à une théorie de l’inten­tion­ nalité affective qui réunit de manière productive des éléments médiévaux et autrichiens. Lauria, dans «‘L’œil du devoir-être’ – La conception déontique de l’in­ tentionnalité du désir et les modes intentionnels», développe quant à lui un modèle de l’intentionnalité des désirs inspiré par la tradition phénoménologique issue de Brentano et son école et qui permet d’éviter les problèmes d’une conception fonc­tionnaliste.

Le second thème est celui de l’intentionnalité dans la perception et l’action.

Dans «Intentionale Inexistenz und Bewusstsein», Gianfranco Soldati part de la thèse brentanienne de l’intentionnalité comme trait caractéristique de l’expérience consciente, tout en demeurant critique face au représentationnalisme et en soutenant que les qualités données dans la perception ne peuvent être des composantes intrinsèques à l’expérience. Hamid Taieb partage cette attitude critique face au représentationnalisme dans «Husserl et P. F. Strawson sur les qualités secondes», où il trace des parallèles entre les conceptions des qualités secondes de ces

deux philosophes et sur le rôle que celles-ci jouent respectivement dans leurs conceptions de la perception. Dans «Peacocke on Depiction and the Visual Field», Javier Kalhat se penche plus précisément sur le problème de la perception esthétique en critiquant l’approche de la dépiction développée par Christopher Pea­cocke.

Enfin, Frank Esken se questionne, dans «Der schwierige Begriff der Handlungsintentionalität», sur l’aptitude de la conception searlienne des intentions in action à rendre compte de phénomènes observés et étudiés notamment en psychologie développementale.

Le troisième thème est celui, plus historique, de l’importance et du rôle des débats entre la philosophie et la psychologie dans le développement des recherches sur l’intentionnalité et la subjectivité entre le 19e et le 20e siècle. Le rôle souvent méconnu joué par Herbart est discuté dans les articles de Carole Maigné, «Penser le moi avec acuité signifie réfuter l’idéalisme» et de David Romand, «La théorie herbartienne de la représentation (Vorstellung): une dialectique de l’acte et du contenu». Là où Maigné souligne le rôle décisif joué par les deux notions de l’intuition et de l’aperception dans la thématisation de la subjectivité chez Herbart, Romand retrace dans la théorie herbartienne de la représentation certaines idées qui présagent de la discussion de l’intentionnalité chez les philosophes Autrichiens. Enfin, Janette Friedrich, «Philosophie mit oder ohne Psychologie?», conclue ce numéro par un survol de deux ouvrages collectifs parus récemment en langue française et discutant des débats autour du psychologisme et de la psychologie empirique de Brentano.

Descartes on Intentionality, Conscientia, and Phenomenal Consciousness

Does Descartes accept the phenomenal intentionality thesis as the thesis is presented in Terence Horgan’s and John Tienson’s 2002 article «Intentionality of Phenomenology and Phenomenology of Intentionality»? Raising this question, the paper intends to shed new light on Descartes’s conceptions of intentionality and conscientia.

In addition, it attempts to identify the aspects of Descartes’s view of the mind that account for what we nowadays call «phenomenal consciousness». It turns out that it is an integral part of Descartes’s conception of intentionality that thinking substances are conscious of their thoughts. However, the same is not generally true of the phenomenal character that Cartesian thoughts exhibit. Instead, at least in the case of sensory thoughts, the phenomenal character is determined by inner sensory objects that are «carried» by these thoughts, but that do not contribute to the thoughts’ intentionality. The upshot is that Descartes does not accept Horgan’s and Tienson’s phenomenal intentionality thesis since intentionality is not grounded in phenomenal character.

Introduction In the first half of the 20th century, it had been a commonplace in analytic philosophy that phenomenal consciousness and intentionality are independent mental features. They were taken to be independent in the sense of being marks of two distinct sets of mental episodes: sensory and propositional episodes. The set of sensory episodes was usually taken to comprise bodily feelings, sensations, emotions, and moods. Members of this set were often considered to be essentially phenomenally conscious, but neither to be conceptual nor intentional. The set of propositional episodes comprises cognitive, conative, and optative mental episodes such as judging that p, intending to bring about that p, and desiring that p.1 They essentially consist of an attitude and a propositional content. Hence, they essentially are conceptual and intentional. According to this view, sensory and propositional episodes can occur together, but if they do, they do so only contingently. This 1

distinction between two sets of mental episodes presupposes that phenomenal consciousness and intentionality are separate mental features, i.e. that phenomenal consciousness of sensory episodes neither includes nor grounds intentionality and that the intentionality of propositional episodes neither includes nor grounds phenomenal consciousness.

In their 2002 paper Intentionality of Phenomenology and Phenomenology of Intentionality, Terence Horgan and John Tienson argue that separatism should be rejected.2 They attack it from two angles: First, they argue for the intentionality of phenomenology (IP) claiming that paradigmatic cases of sensory episodes such as bodily feelings and sense perceptions are intentional and that their intentionality is inseparable from their phenomenal character.3 This means that it is not possible that these episodes possess a ­phenomenal character, but are not intentionally directed towards anything. For instance, it is not possible that an episode has the character of a pain feeling, but is not a feeling of pain in some part of the body; and it is not possible that an ­episode has the character of a visual red experience, but is not an experience of a red object.

Second, they argue for the phenomenology of intentionality (PI) according to which paradigmatic cases of propositional episodes such as judgings, intendings, and desirings exhibit a phenomenal character and that this character is inseparable from their intentional content.4 Hence, such propositional episodes cannot occur without carrying a specific phenomenal character.

Third, apart from these two inseparability claims, Horgan and Tienson also put forward a grounding thesis (I will call it the «phenomenal intentionality thesis»), namely that there is a pervasive kind of intentionality – they call it «phenomenal intentionality» – that is grounded in phenomenal character alone.5 The resulting internalist conception of intentionality is intended to replace externalist conceptions that attempt to explain intentionality merely in terms of causal or other relations between subject and world.6 The phenomenal intentionality thesis has sparked a comprehensive discussion in recent years. According to Uriah Kriegel, this discussion has evolved into the

«Phenomenal Intentionality Research Program» (PIRP).7 This program deserves extensive attention. However, instead of engaging in the debate on the strengths and weaknesses of the phenomenal intentionality thesis, in this paper I will use it as a starting point for discussing related issues in René Descartes’s conception of the mind. My concern is mainly historical, although it is not fully unrelated to PIRP since some protagonists of the contemporary debate consider Descartes to be an important source of inspiration.8 In the course of this paper, I will be concerned with the question whether Descartes’s position is akin to the phenomenal intentionality thesis. This question is helpful in approaching Descartes because, as we will see, it brings important features of Descartes position to the fore that may otherwise go unnoticed. Addressing the question in particular requires us to sort out how Descartes’s understands the intentionality, the conscientia, and the phenomenal consciousness of Cartesian thoughts. As we will see, all three mental phenomena are closely related, yet to be kept distinct.

It has been claimed that Descartes was the first philosopher who recognised phenomenal consciousness9 or, at least, that he was the first philosopher who considered phenomenal consciousness to be the essential feature of the mind.10 This claim got combined with the terminological contention that Descartes applies the term «conscientia» and its cognates in order to pick out the fact that mental episodes are phenomenally conscious. A close look at the texts quickly raises doubts about the terminological claim. Whereas phenomenal consciousness is described in contemporary parlance in intransitive terms (we say that mental episodes are phenomenally conscious), Descartes describes conscientia in transitive terms. He says that subjects are conscius of or have conscientia of their thoughts.11 He never says that thoughts are conscius. This observation might make one wonder whether Descartes’s talk of conscientia really refers to the same phenomenon as the contemporary notion of phenomenal consciousness does. This objection might be remedied by assuming that Descartes’s way of talking about conscientia is shaped by the following implicit claim about the nature of phenomenal consciousness: The intransitive phenomenal consciousness of mental episodes is explained by a form of transitive consciousness the subject has of these episodes. ents to higher-order accounts of phenomenal consciousness appeal to this idea in order to support their views. For instance, David Rosenthal pursues the strategy «to explain a state’s being a conscious state in terms of our being conscious of that state in some particular way», and he adds that «[i]t seems relatively uncontroversial that a state of which one is in no way transitively conscious could not be a conscious state. Even Descartes’ usage, which still strongly influences our own, conforms to this commonsense observation, since he invariably describes the states we call conscious as states we are immediately conscious of».12 Following Rosenthal’s lead, one might thus attempt to bring Descartes’s peculiar transitive usage of the term «conscientia» and its cognates in line with the intransitive way in which we talk about phenomenal consciousness. In order to achieve this, one needs to assume that Descartes wants to explain intransitive phenomenal consciousness in transitive terms and that he does not use the term «conscientia» and its cognates in order to describe the explanandum, but the explanans in this regard. However, it is to be noted that Descartes does not seem to have a term at his disposal that denotes the explanans, i.e. intransitive phenomenal consciousness. This observation, again, raises doubts about ascribing Rosenthal’s explanatory project to Descartes and it fuels the initial objection we started with: When Descartes applies the term «conscientia» and its cognates, he may not talk about phenomenal consciousness, but have quite a different mental phenomenon in mind. Phenomenal consciousness might just not be the issue. Whether Descartes really does pick out phenomenal consciousness by the term «conscientia» and its cognates cannot be decided independently of taking a close look at Descartes’s usage of the term and its theoretical role in his works. This is what we will do in the next sections. We will start with some background material from Descartes’s ontology.

Ontological Preliminaries Descartes is a substance dualist. He believes that there are two types of substances: thinking substances (res cogitantes) and extended substances (res extensae).

Their categorical distinction is due to their different essences. The essence of thinking substances – or their «principle attribute»,13 as Descartes calls it in terms of his technical vocabulary – consists in the attribute of thought.
