Winter Health Transformation STAY HEALTHY, HAPPY AND VIBRANT THIS SEASON WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS FROM NEW YORK NUTRITIONIST HALEY KNAUER BUILD IMMUNITY Make sure to incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables everyday to get the vitamins your body needs. Try increasing foods with antibacterial properties like garlic and ginger. Since 70% of our immune system lives in our gut, take a probiotic or add yogurt or fermented foods into your diet to increase healthy bacteria. YOU TIME Our schedules fill up quickly around the holidays, we get to spend more time with our family and friends but make sure to also spend a couple of minutes on yourself. Soak in a bubble bath, treat yourself to a massage or go for a leisurely walk in the park. Take care of yourself so you have more energy to enjoy the people that are important to you. SNACK BETTER Plan ahead and arm yourself with healthy snack options to make sure that you don’t have a food emergency. When you’re overly hungry, it’s easy to reach for processed snacks that are high in sugar. Carry unsalted almonds or an apple with you so you have an option while you’re on the go. MOVE MORE Steer clear of weight gain this winter by making sure that you have daily movement. You don’t have to reserve an hour a day for the gym. Make it a point to take the stairs, walk to the farther subway stop and do some simple yoga stretches at your desk. You’ll be surprised at how quickly little spurts of movement add up. RECIPE REVAMP We tend to crave warming, comfort foods this time of year. The problem is that these are typically not the best choices for us. Try substituting a healthier ingredient in your recipes. Applesauce can be used in place of butter in some baking recipes and coconut oil is a great substitute for vegetable oil. You and your guests won’t even notice the difference.

DRINK UP As the weather gets cooler, we naturally don’t feel as thirsty as we do in the warmer months. It’s easy to forget to drink our daily 8 cups of water, but we need them just as much. Making sure that you’re adequately hydrated helps you look and feel refreshed. Try adding orange slices with mint, or strawberries with lime wedges. Get creative!

Everything But The Knife
We get the skinny from Rebecca Kleinerman, M.D., F.A.A.D., one of our star medical and cosmetic dermatologists, on which non-invasive treatments she trusts most for obtaining an ageless look without going under the knife. Plus, she shares the news that there may be a needle-free Botox out soon! The Skinny: Why are non-invasive cosmetic treatments more appealing than surgery? Dr. Rebecca Kleinerman: I think that more frequent, minimally invasive procedures such as injectables can have a big impact over time. They can be accomplished with little downtime and avoidance of work or social obligations. But larger concerns often warrant a surgical strategy. There is a place for both surgery and non-surgical options in our cosmetic armamentarium. TS: What non-invasive rejuvenating devices/treatments are you most excited about right now? Why? RK: Well, we’re heading into winter, and now is the time to treat brown spots (lentigines) and consider
4
resurfacing without the fear of strong summer sun exposure thereafter. The Fraxel Dual is a popular option right now. TS: Botox is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the U.S. Yet it still has negative connotations in the media. Why do you think it gets a bad rap? RK: There’s a fine line between “done” and “overdone.” I think that it takes training and experience to determine optimal placement of injections for botulinum toxin, and sometimes “overdone” doesn’t look natural. I aim for natural results. Most of my patients tell me that nobody can tell they’ve had something done but that they look more rested and their dynamic lines have softened.
TS: What’s your beauty secret? RK: I’m into layering products. I tend to put on more than one moisturizer. I’ll use antioxidant products in the morning and retinoid or retinol based products at night. I’ll alternate face washes depending on the day and the season, usually including a gentle cream cleanser as well as a glycolic wash. TS: What wellness activities do you practice to ensure you are taking a holistic approach to skin health? RK: There’s no doubt that fitness and nutritional health are reflected in skin appearance. I caution my patients to apply sun protection before exercise regimens that will be outside. I recently had a patient
who told me that her skin always looks best when her emotional happiness is maximized. I think there’s a lot of truth to that! TS: What do you think we can expect in 2015 and beyond in terms of cosmetic treatments? Is there a new Botox on the horizon? RK: There’s a topical botulinum toxin gel that’s being tested by Revance therapeutics that may be used in areas like the crow’s feet without the need for injections, which sounds like a promising option and may help avoid tiny bruises that are occasionally seen when injecting the eye area. Also should be great for needle-phobic patients! There’s also a new product from Kythera biopharmaceuticals being developed to treat limited areas of submental fat without the need for liposuction. Stay tuned!

ASK A DERM: DRY SKIN
Winter can be cruel to your skin. With the lack of humidity and cold temperatures taking their toll. We asked our team of healthcare providers for their best advice on keeping skin its most supple, all winter long. Here are their tips: “Apply your moisturizer while your skin is damp from the shower. Whenever you let water evaporate off the skin, it dries it out more. It will also seal that water in as extra moisture.” – Jeremy Fenton, M.D., F.A.A.D.
“Keep your showers short - maximum 5 minutes! Use only lukewarm water and minimize the amount of soap used.” – Rachel Nazarian, M.D., F.A.A.D.
“This winter try to keep those feet from getting scaly and cracked by applying a moisturizer with lactic acid to your feet within a few minutes of showering. Try AMLACTIN, an over the counter lotion.” – Ami Dalal, M.S., PA-C
“Invest in a humidifier and use it nightly to help introduce moisture back into the skin.” - Julie Zuckerman, PA-C
“Wear a hat and gloves to protect exposed skin when you’re outside this winter. Covering up will prevent lips and skin from chapping.” – Eric Schweiger, M.D., F.A.A.D.

The Latest News About Psoriasis
Jeremy Fenton, M.D., F.A.A.D. discusses treatment breakthroughs & skincare tips for psoriasis The Skinny: What new methods are being used at Schweiger Dermatology to treat psoriasis? Dr. Jeremy Fenton: The most recent addition to our options for treating psoriasis is a new oral medication called Otezla (apremilast). This is medication that blocks a specific enzyme called phosphodiesterase -4. The great thing about this is that it provides an option for patients that is very effective, doesn’t suppress the immune system, and doesn’t require injections. Another relatively new addition in the last 10 years is the excimer laser (which is covered by some insurances), but it has gained popularity in just the last 5 years. This device delivers a focused beam of highenergy ultraviolet light to treat problem areas of psoriasis without exposing the whole body. It is a great drug-free option with minimal risk of side effects. The Skinny: How have the methods to treat psoriasis improved over the years? Dr. Fenton: Over recent years, doctors have been learning tremendous amounts about the causes of psoriasis on a cellular level. They understand more about the pathways involved in the process, and have been able to develop drugs that block the relevant points in the pathway. This has led to the use of biologic drugs that more selectively target “Over the recent years, doctors psoriasis, many giving excellent results. Light therapy as a have been learning tremendous drug-free option has expanded as well. The excimer laser is designed to deliver a much larger and focused dose of amounts about psoriasis on a ultraviolet light, giving great results without the need to expose cellular level” the entire body. The excimer laser allows us to be more aggressive, because we aren’t exposing the entire body. The Skinny: Why is psoriasis such a common condition? Dr. Fenton: There still remains a lot to be learned about psoriasis, such as why people get it in the first place. There is a strong genetic component. The immune system plays a large role as well. Infections such as strep can trigger flares of psoriasis, but we think this is more likely uncovering a predisposition for the disease, rather than an actual cause of it. The Skinny: What skincare tips do you have for people with psoriasis? Dr. Fenton: People with psoriasis can benefit from over the counter topical treatments such as salicylic acid or tarbased treatments and shampoos (Neutrogena’s T-Gel or T-Sal shampoo). The salicylic acid treatments are better for people who suffer from thick or very scaly plaques. Keeping the skin well moisturized with a thick cream or ointment can help reduce itching. Getting a little bit of sunlight can definitely help mild psoriasis, but since sun exposure can increase the risk of skin cancer and aging, it is much safer to get targeted ultraviolet light treatments in a doctor’s office. Living a healthy lifestyle can also improve one’s psoriasis. So, if you are looking for another reason to lose weight, eat fruits and vegetables, and stop smoking – all of those can improve your psoriasis.
Jeremy S. Fenton, M.D., F.A.A.D. is a Board Certified dermatologist practicing both cosmetic and general dermatology. Dr. Fenton is currently treating patients from the Schweiger Dermatology Group Midtown East location in Manhattan.

Danger: Winter Sun
IT’S EASY TO ASSUME THAT SUMMER IS THE ONLY TIME YOU NEED TO SLATHER ON THE SUNSCREEN, BUT THAT’S HARDLY THE TRUTH While you may not have as much exposed skin in the wintertime, it’s crucial to protect the skin that is exposed to the sun. This is true especially if you’re a skier or snowboarder. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV radiation is 35 to 45% more intense than it is at sea level. On top of that, snow reflects up to 80% of the UV light from the sun, which means the same rays are hitting you twice! Not only do you have the intense UV rays to contend with, but also add in the fact that cold winter wind

and snow can eat away at your sunscreen as well as cause dry, chapped skin. The best defense against the winter sun and bitter cold are daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher that contains moisturizing ingredients to soothe and hydrate the skin. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the ears and lips, two areas that are often missed but are the first to get sun exposure. Your winter sun-protection essentials should include a hat, gloves and a scarf and these products!

IS YOUR HAIR
AGING YOU?
YOUR HAIR CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR OVERALL LOOK - FIND OUT FROM HAIR COLORIST GREGORY WILDE OF WILDE HAIR, WHO SPECIALIZES IN WORKING WITH COSMETIC PATIENTS IN HELPING THEM ACHIEVE A HAIR COLOR & STYLE THAT COMPLIMENTS THEIR BOTOX OR FILLERS The Skinny: Why is hair such an important piece of the aesthetic puzzle? Gregory Wilde: Hair is the crowning glory for a woman. Hair can help a woman exude, and most importantly, feel internal confidence. The cut, color, style and length of the hair can enhance face shape, minimize or completely cover scarring and camouflage premature aging of the skin. TS: You specialize in ‘color balancing.” Can you explain what that means?
GW: Color Balancing is a term that I developed whereby hair colors are harmoniously merged and blended so that the overall color of the hair looks completely natural. Sometimes I use five different colors to create balance. TS: What hair changes would you suggest for a woman who is getting Botox and fillers? GW: My clients that have had medical aesthetic procedures typically like soft pliable waves that frame the face with more hair volume. Soft golden light around the face always helps
to enhance the overall aesthetic but every client that I see is unique and I develop a prescriptive hair treatment for each and every person that sits in my chair. TS: Is there a hair color or style that instantly ages a woman? GW: My personal feeling is that short, choppy styles can look amazing in magazines but typically can age a woman. Soft, layered waves that fall to the shoulder or below tend to look age a woman. Every woman is different and I always take into consideration her natural level of
“Every woman is different and I always take into consideration her natural level of color and work within that for the most beautiful outcome. color and work within that for the most beautiful outcome. I also have many clients that leave some of their gray hair or much of it and I color blend with high and low color foiling systems to achieve a more natural look. The biggest color that ages a woman is color that does not match her natural skin tone or eye color. Nothing is more aging on a woman than seeing a gray line with no blending of the color. TS: Is there a hair color or style that takes years away? GW: There is not one hair color that is the panacea for every woman in terms of erasing years. The best color is always achieved after a thorough one on one consultation. Again, with regard to style, soft, longer layers with frame around the face, always take years off of my clients. TS: How do you help women who are suffering from hair loss?
GW: At Wilde Hair, we have access to multiple systems to help people suffering from hair loss. We use a digital microscope to analyze the hair and determine in consultation, which system will be the greatest benefit. Clients that have Alopecia Areata now have some amazing new medical prosthetic options. We also have partial hair replacement systems to fill in areas where hair is fine or thinning without damage to the underlying hair. I developed a four tier system of extension application that can instantly give back volume and texture change in under 90 minutes.

The Leonor Greyl Masque Quintessence is a deep penetrating and hydrating masque for hair that has been ravaged by bleaching and sun. These products are great for highlighted and color treated hair. TS: What are the must have hair products every woman should own? GW: At Wilde Hair, we love the Leonor Greyl product line. I recommend the Mousse a Lotus Volumatrice for rich full matte shine and body for fine hair. I adore this product line
