2009 Authors Feast & Trade Show Millennium Biltmore Hotel Saturday, October 24 An Action-Packed Day 2 – 3 p.m. Using Edelweiss Interactive Catalogs Discover Edelweiss, an on-line interactive publisher catalog service that enhances or replaces the use of traditional hard copy publisher catalogs. This presentation will provide an overview of the functionality of Edelweiss, including a full demonstration of using Edelweiss for a new title buying and research. Session is appropriate for new users who have not used Edelweiss and those with limited experience who would like a refresher on its capabilities or would like to learn more about its features. Presented by Edelweiss/Above the Treeline 2 – 3 p.m. The Gen Z Reader: Understanding the New Reader of the Post-Electronic Age You’ve seen the statistics and heard the gloomy reports. Reading is in decline--or is it? From cell-phone novels to the rise of DIGG, and a blurring of lines between print, audio and digital media formats, it may be a matter of redefining what reading means to a new generation of consumers. This panel will take a look at the “new reader” of the post electronic age, and will focus on trends in the teen and early adult marketplace. In particular, it will talk about what the future reader looks like, and what, where, and how they are “reading.” Presented by Kristen McLean, Executive Director American Booksellers for Children 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. Building Productive & Profitable Programming Partnerships with Your Local Public Libraries Libraries and bookstores share many common goals: to provide a community center for the exchange of ideas, to connect readers to great books, to encourage a love of reading for all ages, and to inspire people with great authors and programs. Yet often bookstores and libraries miss the opportunity to work together to their mutual benefit because they stumble over their differences rather than build on their common goals. This program will cover practical strategies for initiating a productive institutional relationship, including how to define a shared community mission, and how to develop sustainable joint programming. Participants will get practical event ideas, marketing techniques, and solutions to some of the most common roadblocks. Presented by Kristen McLean, Executive Director American Booksellers for Children 5:15 – 7:30 p.m. Trade Show and Reception/Authors Autographs No host bar. 25 exhibitors. See List of Exhibtors and Trade Show Specials + Authors Attending. Book signings taking place at Exhibit Tables only. 7:30 p.m. Dinner and SCIBA Book Awards Presentation First Ever Authors Feast Keynote Speaker: Elizabeth Kostova SCIBA is very excited to announce that our first ever Authors Feast keynote speaker is Elizabeth Kostova, author of bestselling novel The Historian. Kostova graduated from Yale and holds an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award for the Novel-inProgress. Six authors will visit your table through the course of the evening! (After dinner don’t forget to pick up your box of books packed especially for SCIBA by Ingram Roseberg!) 7
