JAgUAR, gUATemAlA The vast northern department of Petén occupies about a third of Guatemala but contains just over three percent of its population, a huge expanse of tropical rainforest, swamp and savannah that stretches into southern Mexico and across the Maya Mountains to Belize. Large expanses remain virtually untouched, with ancient mahogany trees that tower 50m above the forest floor, and an extraordinarily rich wildlife –hummingbirds, toucans, buzzards, wild turkeys and birds of paradise – and, beneath the forest canopy, lumbering tapir, ocelots, deer, coatis and jaguars. But this garden of eden is under threat: waves of settlers have cleared enormous tracts of jungle, and oil exploration and commercial logging have brought with them mountains of money and machinery, cutting new roads deep into the forest. Much of Petén is officially protected, but the regulations are loosely enforced and widely ignored. Worse, environmental activists are subject to routine threats and intimidation. 5
