John Bonsall brings a wealth of management experience from the retail, automotive and telecommunications industries In 1975 he was introduced to the University and began the Russells’ home study course. A resident of Virginia since 1976, he has been involved with the Russells, the university, and museum ever since.

“For me, the resounding message of the Russells’ teachings, is how to best be of service to my fellow man”, he stated. “The knowledge and insights I gained from my time with Mrs. Russell at Swannanoa, cemented my commitment to their timeless mission”.

It was a struggle to keep the museum afloat at Swannanoa Palace for over ten years. The doors closed, the art work was packed and stored in a warehouse. John continued with his career and his studies. “It became apparent that without the museum, to showcase the expansive art works, the Russells’ contributions to science, philosophy and art would be lost, forever”, John shared.

John was instrumental in negotiating and acquiring the museum’s 33,000 square foot building and provided assistance in the artwork's rebirth, after it had laid dormant for decades. Along with museum president Matt Presti they curated, placed and hung every piece of art. The museum opened in late 2018. The grand opening was held in November 2019. Matt returned to the private sector and passed the gavel (the position of president) to John in August of 2021.

John raises horses at his ranch in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and is an avid golfer.

Walter Russell grew up in Boston, the son of immigrants from Nova Scotia. The Boston of his time was awash with new ideas, but he achieved fame and fortune when he and his bride moved to New York City in 1894. There he became a magazine art editor, a war correspondent, and a children’s portrait painter. A dearth of studio space led him into a joint venture in cooperative apartment building. In May of 1921 he had an out of body experience he called Cosmic Illumination. New knowledge was revealed to him “in the Light.” Debates with scientists and several books followed as he tried to explain his new knowledge. At age 56 he turned to sculpture, rising to the top with the Mark Twain Memorial and President Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms. Russell is associated with the New Thought Movement and with the Science of Man. The New York Herald-Tribune called him “The Modern Leonardo,” and to Glenn Clark, his biographer, he was “The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe.”

Lao Russell born Daisy Grace Cook in Buckinghamshire, England. Lao changed name (after the Chinese mystic Lao Tzu) married Walter Russell in 1948. Lao was a precocious child and entered business ve a young woman and found financial succ married business partner Lionel Stebbing together they made a fortune. That relationship soured, however, and Lao drifted for some years, meeting people, traveling, and searching for meaning. After World War II began in Europe, Lao sought refuge in the United States, which she entered in 1940. She settled in Boston, did volunteer work, formed lasting friendships, continued her voracious reading, and had a brief mystical experience. She gravitated toward the Boston Home of Truth (Eleanor Mel’s New Thought outpost), read Glenn Clark’s biography of Walter Russell, and called him in 1946. Lao was Walter’s “soul mate.” Together they wrote books, established the University of Science and Philosophy in 1957, and lived and worked at the mountaintop palace called Swannanoa in Afton, Virginia.

"Prior to attending The Russell Experience, I was unfamiliar with Walter and Lao Russell. The first day, I was truly mesmerized. I recognized the “Might of the Ages” painting, done in 1900. HOW did I not know, or had I forgotten? This was one of Walter Russell’s greatest works. This prolific painting catapulted him to international acclaim.

"I was reminded of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in the movie “Catch Me If You Can”. Like the real Frank Abagnale, Walter Russell was a true autodidact. Nothing could stop him from pursuing and mastering anything that interested him. His interests spanned music, writing, an array of artistic mediums, Arabian horses, ice skating, real estate development, science and philosophy. He excelled in them all.

While attending the 2018 Fall Festival in downtown Waynesboro, local artist Cara Mayo literally stumbled upon the Russell Museum. “I was immediately drawn in. The museum’s welcoming ambiance beckoned me to get involved. Using my creative process, I hope to expand conscious awareness to benefit the Russells’ messages”, she stated.
