Child Safety news, information and ideas National Child Safety Week – June 20th – 26th 2011 National Child Safety Week is an opportunity for us all to think about what we can do to help make things safer for children and young people in our communities. To mark Child Safety Week, Safety Net has launched its ‘Safety Charter’.
Safety Charter
What can YOU do?
Safety Net believes that: 1) Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility 2) We all have the right to feel safe 3) There is nothing so awful that we can’t talk with someone about it What YOU can do: •
• • • • • • •
Learn how to keep safe – recognise your Early Warning Signs and take Safe Risks Listen to children’s worries Make sure your home is a safe place Work together to stop bullying Give children safe places to go Let children have a voice Find out who you can ask for help If in doubt, check it out
Here are some parents’ suggestions about what we can do to keep children safe and check out the people who have contact with our children; • Before anything has happened, practice safety ideas with your children. • Listen to what your children say and take notice of their feelings. • Trust your own instincts and encourage your children to do the same – it is usually our “gut” feelings that first tell us that something is not ok. • Keep an eye out for each other’s children; be a good neighbour. • Ask groups that work with children for their safety policies and procedures. • If in doubt, check it out: Talk to someone who can help.

Child Safety news, information and ideas Children need safe places to go and play in their communities Safety Net works with local community groups to make sure that they have good practices to help keep children safe.
Listen to children’s worries and feelings Children feel safer when they have people they can talk to about their worries, no matter how big or small. Sometimes children’s worries may be about a situation where they need adults to help them and take action to keep them safe. Safety Net talks to adults about how they can listen to and support children and teaches children that telling someone they trust is important.
Help stop bullying Safety Net supports children who have been bullied by running assertiveness training and by working in with local schools to run anti bullying schemes, called “Playground Buddies” in school playgrounds. We also run “Safety on the Buses” to make travelling to school feel safer for children.
We provide Child Protection training, Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks and on-going support. We also work with local children to run their own projects that make their communities safer. “Let’s Protect” is a new Safety Net project that will develop a quality standard for child safety in the community and voluntary sector in Brighton and Hove, giving parents and carers peace of mind that their child is in safe hands.
Make sure your home is a safe place Being a parent is hard and sometimes parents need a helping hand too. Safety Net’s Family Link project supports parents by delivering one-to-one family support and group work. We also run parenting training courses (including Triple P), provide home safety assessments and home safety equipment for the under 5’s.
