Safety Net’s Stay Safe Group
Our group work programme provides some basic but effective techniques to help boost the self-esteem of children who are likely to be targeted by bullies. We use a Circle Time approach to our group work which helps to keep all members feeling safe and supported.
Protective Behaviours The Safety Net Assertiveness Programme uses a personal safety strategy called Protective Behaviours. This helps children to identify their feelings about risky situations that they may come across at school or in the community such as bullying and peer pressure and how to stand up for themselves in an assertive and confident way. In addition, the children are encouraged to identify a personal network of support that they can call upon if they feel unsafe or unhappy (called a Helping Hand).
Personal Safety in the community Group members have the opportunity to learn and practice through role-play some techniques to help them cope with bullying situations. We also play a range of games which highlight safety skills for children when they are out and about.
Stay Safe Holiday Workshops What happens on the day? We begin the group by getting to know each other and playing some games. This is followed by a discussion about the three main types of behaviour (Passive, Aggressive and Assertive) and how we come across to others, even if we may not feel confident. The children then work in pairs or small groups to practice these skills using role-play. There will be some creative activities for the children to take part in as well as an opportunity to have fun and share their experiences in a supportive environment. Each group has a maximum of twelve children and runs from 10a.m to 2p.m, lunch will be provided. The Safety Net trainers’ are police checked and have over ten years experience of delivering group work to children aged from 8 to 16.
