Healthy Living: Know Your History Most people have a family health history of some chronic diseases (e.g., cancer, heart disease, diabetes) and health conditions (e.g., high blood pressure). People who have a close family member with a chronic disease may have a higher risk of developing that disease than those without such a family member. A family health history is a written or graphic record of the diseases and health conditions present in your family. A useful history for understanding health risks and preventing disease shows three generations of your biological relatives, the age at diagnosis, and the age and cause of death of deceased family members. It is helpful to talk with family members about your health history, write this information down, and update it from time to time. Family health history information may help health care providers determine which tests and screenings are recommended to help family members know their health risk. Fair Food Facts Arkalalah is here! That means parades, rides, and of course food booths. With so many tempting foods available it can be challenging to make good food choices. To offset some of the calories, try splitting food with a friend, stay hydrated by drinking water instead of sweetened beverages, and watch your intake of fried foods. If you are still tempted, keep in mind some nutritional info on your favorite fair foods. Auxiliary Donates Equipment The SCKMC Auxiliary recently presented a check to hospital Chief Financial Officer Holly Harper for $2,550. The gift was approved by the Auxiliary during their October general meeting. Funds will go towards the purchase of a temporal thermometer for ER, fans for patient rooms, and a bariatric procedure table for the hospital’s specialty clinic. The Auxiliary volunteer their time at the medical center’s gift shop, information desk, and various other departments through out the facility. They also volunteer their time to create items for the gift shop, bake sales, and other fundraisers. The funds raised throughout the year are used to purchase equipment and furnishings for the facility, as well as sponsor scholarships for local students in the healthcare field.
Hospital Staff Scare Up Some Fun SCKMC employees brightened the day of their patients and guests today by holding their annual Halloween costume contest. You can vote for the best department costume and best individual costume by “liking” your favorite photos beginning Sunday, Nov. 1st. Best costume will receive a $25 gift card and the best department costumes will receive a Halloween prize package. Winners will be announced online Thursday, Nov. 5th.
The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. A new CDC recommendation has been made for Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23. Both are vaccines approved for adults 50 years of age and older for the prevention of pneumococcal pneumonia. The CDC change will affect how far apart healthy seniors should wait in between doses. It is still recommended that adults 65 years and older continue receiving both vaccinations. However, instead of waiting six to twelve months, per previous guidelines, it is now recommended to wait at least one-year between doses. Prevnar 13 should be given first since the immune response is better if given before the other. However, if Pneumovax 23 was already given wait one year to receive the other. Medicare part B should cover both Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23.
