Medical Center Auxiliary Wraps Up Year with Holiday Celebration This past Tuesday the volunteers of SCKMC’s Auxiliary celebrated another successful year during their annual Christmas luncheon. City Commissioner Jay Warren addressed the approximately 50 volunteers and staff who attended the event. “The most valuable gift we can ever give someone is our time. And I want to thank you for all the great things you do. Large and small, they all have a meaning to the families and the individuals that you help,” Commissioner Warren said. The Auxiliary contributes to the hospital each year through volunteer hours and monetary donations. They raise funds throughout the year through a variety of activities including bake sales, holiday sales, and operating the hospital gift shop. This year over $9,000 was provided for facility equipment purchases and healthcare scholarships. Through these donations, SCKMC was able to purchase equipment for the surgery, intensive care, pharmacy, lab, maintenance and infection prevention departments. “The board recognizes the volunteer time which you put forth. They also recognize how much you contribute to us in terms of the gifts of equipment and all that you do for the hospital. It does make a difference. You touch a lot of lives and you do it out of the generosity of your hearts,” said Steve Perkins, SCKMC’s Chief Executive Officer. The SCKMC Auxiliary will be holding their final fundraiser for 2014 on the morning of Friday, December 19th. The members have baked more than 2,000 cookies that will be decoratively wrapped and sold for $8.00 per two dozen cookies. The Christmas cookie fundraiser will take place in the hospital lobby.

Healthy Living: with Dr. Eric Thomson Sleep Apnea – Sleep apnea is affecting an extremely large part of the population. I have learned as a clinician, through those people, just how devastating poor sleep can be to their lifestyle and overall health. Most commonly the issue is the anatomy of the neck. They enter the paralyzed phase of sleep, which we all do, where the only thing working is their heart and their diaphragm. But they become so relaxed that their airway collapses a little. I go about diagnosing sleep apnea largely by speaking with the spouse. I always ask “Does your spouse ever scare you? Do they ever stop breathing at night?” If they say yes, than that patient will likely be recommended for a sleep study. If you have questions or concerns about sleep apnea contact your family physician.

Here are some practical tips for healthy weight loss: set realistic goals; keep a food journal; pay attention to serving sizes; bake or grill instead of fry or breading; choose activity you enjoy; have a workout. In order to lose one to two pounds per week, generally you would need to reduce your calorie intake by 500-1000 calories per day.
