Meet Dr. Willie Posey II Dr. Willie Posey II is SCKMC’s newest physician. His practice interests include family medicine and pediatrics, although he specializes in internal medicine and non-invasive cardiology. “I worked as a Medical Technologist before attending medical school. I graduated at Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, receiving my DO degree in 1988. My Internal Medicine Residency completed with Michigan State University, through the Detroit Osteopathic and Bi-County Community Osteopathic Hospitals completing my Residency in 1991. I then entered my sub-specialty training in Adult invasive/interventional Cardiology. My interest in medical practice include Heart Failure, Cardiac Arrhythmias and Hypertension,” Dr. Posey said. Dr. Posey has over twenty years of experience providing healthcare to rural communities. “Since finishing my training, my practice has centered around Family Medicine and Pediatrics. Working in a smaller community, which has always been where I wanted to practice medicine, (in fact the reason I decided to become a Doctor was to work in a small community), and doing so allows one the opportunity to have a wider scope in practice,” Dr. Posey said. Dr. Posey most recently practiced in Syracuse KS where he focused on family medicine. “Helping to take care of the ‘little ones’ is always a joy especially to see how they will bounce back so quickly after an illness,” Dr. Posey said. Beginning March 28th, Dr. Posey will run a full-time practice split between two locations, the South Central Kansas Medical Center Specialty Clinic located on the main hospital complex, and Winfield Medical Arts located at 3625 Quail Ridge Drive in Winfield. In addition, he is working shifts in the medical center’s emergency room as the ER provider. Dr. Posey is currently accepting new patients and appointments can be scheduled by calling SCKMC’s Specialty Clinic at (620) 441-5711 or Winfield Medical Arts at (620) 221-6100. For more information on Dr. Posey or other SCKMC providers, visit us online at www.sckmc.org.

City Commission Approves Tax Question The Arkansas City City Commission approved for a onepercent sales tax to be voted on by mail-in ballot during their March 8th meeting. If approved, the sales tax will be limited to a maximum of ten years and can be used for no other purpose except debt service coverage of the bonds used to fund construction of the hospital. Ballots are scheduled to be mailed on May 4th and must be returned by May 24th. Only registered voters living inside the Ark City city limits will be eligible to vote. SCKMC staff have begun an educational campaign to inform the public of the hospital’s strategic plan to improve their current financial situation, as well as explain the need for the sales tax, and possible consequences should the tax fail. Multiple meetings will be held through April & May for civic organizations, church groups, and the general public. Those interested in scheduling a presentation should contact SCKMC’s Chief Operations Officer, Clayton Pappan at 441-5920 or e-mail claytonp@sckrmc.org.

March Employee of the Month Congratulations Marci Hardister, Registered Nurse for the Medical Surgical Unit, for being named the SCKMC Exceptional Service Award winner for March. Marci was nominated by a patient for making them feel “completely at home from the first point of contact.” Marci was presented with a certificate of appreciation and will also have a special parking spot reserved for her.

The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. A new CDC recommendation has been made for Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23. Both are vaccines approved for adults 50 years of age and older for the prevention of pneumococcal pneumonia. The CDC change will affect how far apart healthy seniors should wait in between doses. It is still recommended that adults 65 years and older continue receiving both vaccinations. However, instead of waiting six to twelve months, per previous guidelines, it is now recommended to wait at least one-year between doses. Prevnar 13 should be given first since the immune response is better if given before the other. However, if Pneumovax 23 was already given wait one year to receive the other. Medicare part B should cover both Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23.
