Plumbing Issue Closes Kitchen

Dr. Lin Expands Practice

SCKMC’s Dietary department was closed for several days when a main drain pipe clogged and flooded the department. Upon further inspection it was found that the pipe had pulled apart and had overtime filled with soil. “Hutton Construction came down, and the architect was on the phone, but (the pipe) wasn’t properly glued at the time the building was built,” reported CEO Virgil Watson to the hospital Board. Repairing the line included cutting through the concrete floor near the hospital’s server room, which created additional concern although service was not interrupted. “It was quite a little nightmare for a while, but we survived and are back up and running as normal. Our patients did eat, and we did feed our employees. We stepped up and took care of everybody. I do appreciate everything that everyone did to help us get there,” Watson said.

After five years as Ark City’s first full-time OB/GYN, Dr. Perry Lin is expanding his practice to a second location. In addition to his established practice through the SCKMC Specialty Clinic located on the hospital campus, he is now accepting new patients through South Central Kansas Clinic located at 515 N. Summit in downtown Ark City. Dr. Lin has practiced for over 20 years, caring for a wide variety of women’s health issues including obstetrics, gynecology, high risk pregnancy, and laparoscopic surgery. He is double board certified as an OB/GYN and in reproductive endocrinology / infertility making him one of less than 1,000 physicians worldwide to be certified at his level. “The female reproductive endocrinology system is the foundation on which the field of ob/gyn is built, and is among the most complex in all of medicine. The subspecialty training has been very helpful in every aspect of my practice,” Dr. Lin said. Dr. Lin will hold office hours at the hospital Specialty Clinic on Mondays and Wednesdays, and at SCK Clinic on Tuesdays and Fridays. “My approach is to provide information so a patient has an understanding of the situation and then help her make the best possible decision for herself and for her baby’s benefit,” Dr. Lin said. “I feel it is a great privilege to help bring a new human being safely into the world by simply doing a job I enjoy.” Referrals from a family practice physician are not necessary with most insurances. For more information about the services provided by Dr. Lin or to schedule an appointment call SCK Clinic at (620) 442-4850 or SCKMC Specialty Clinic at (620) 441-5711.

April Employee of the Month Congratulations Christine Hamm, Dietary Manager for the Nutritional Services Department, for being named the SCKMC Exceptional Service Award winner for April. Christine was nominated by a coworker for always being there for her team and going the extra mile to ensure a smooth transition with the addition of the Senior Healthcare Unit. She was presented with a certificate of appreciation by hospital CEO Virgil Watson and will also have a special parking spot reserved for her throughout the month. Great job Christine!

The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. Xyzal Allergy 24hr second generation antihistamine is now available over the counter. It will compete with Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra. Xyzal claims to have a quicker onset of action and longer duration. However, this may not make a difference if the medication is used daily. All of these meds will likely have a comparable effectiveness. Some patients may respond better with Xyzal when compared to Claritin, but drowsiness may increase.
