National Recognition Weeks Overlap

Staff Recognized for Service

May hosts two of the nation’s largest healthcare recognition weeks, National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. SCKMC held events for both of these special occasions. National Nurses Week has been celebrated since 1954, although it was not officially recognized until President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation in 1974. Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday. SCKMC celebrated with games, prizes, meals, and activities for all nursing staff. This year’s National Hospital Week celebration was held from May 7 – 13. National Hospital Week is considered to be the nation’s largest healthcare event, celebrating the efforts of the hospital team and the care they provide. SCKMC has scheduled a full slate of activities for staff in order to celebrate the efforts of the hospital team and the care they provide. Events included virtual bingo, a build your own sundae bar, donuts delivered to the departments by administration, a picnic lunch, and the annual years of service luncheon. “Now more than ever, hospitals play a vital role in improving community health across the nation – this extends far beyond strictly providing medical care. National Hospital Week reinforces the essential role hospitals play in their community’s overall health. Take this year’s National Hospital Week as an opportunity to thank all of the dedicated individuals for their contributions,” said Cindy Samuelson with the Kansas Hospital Association. The medical center will wrap up the hospital week activities by hosting a free community cookout at South Central Kansas Clinic, 515 N. Summit in Ark City, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. this Friday. The cookout is in honor of Dr. Perry Lin’s practice expansion which now includes clinic hours at South Central Kansas Clinic.

Each year during National Hospital Week, SCKMC holds a service luncheon event for individuals within the organization who are celebrating a milestone anniversary. The event is attended by honorees from all departments, as well as team leaders and hospital administration. SCKMC’s Chief Executive Officer, Virgil Watson, addressed those attending this year’s luncheon. “We can’t say ‘thank you’ enough to all of you and your fellow employees. We appreciate all of you and all that you do. I just can’t find the words to properly say thank you for all that you do, and your dedication and loyalty that you give to our hospital,” Watson said. Honorees are presented with achievement pins by their department manager commemorating the number years they have been employed at the medical center. The following members were recognized for their service: Joyce Baker, Environmental Services (5 years); Shanea Chrisman, ER Registration (5 years); Brandi Cyrus, Nutritional Services (5 years); Dr. Perry Lin, OB/GYN (5 years); Ashley Lynn, Med/Surg Team Leader (5 years); Riley Stegman, Laboratory (5 years); Tammy Eiselt, Employee Health (10 years); Angela Kelly, House Supervisor (10 years); Holly Harper, CFO (10 years); Valerie Reed, Business Services (15 years); Cassie Crocker, Laboratory (20 years); Mike Metzinger, Maintenance (20 years). In addition, Jamilee Metzinger received special recognition for her dedication to patient care. Jamilee retired last month, spending 41 years providing nursing services at SCKMC. John Jones, SCKMC’s Chief Operations Officer, thanked Metzinger for her dedicated service. “Forty years, how do you put that into some meaningful perspective? Think about how much medicine has changed and to maintain that impresses me the most. You define nursing, congratulations,” Jones said.

May Employee of the Month Congratulations Amanda Buttress, Physical Therapist, for being named the SCKMC Exceptional Service Award winner for May. Amanda was nominated by a patient for always being attentive, caring, and knowledgeable. She was presented with a certificate of appreciation by hospital CFO Holly Harper and will also have a special parking spot reserved for her throughout the month. Great job Amanda!

The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. The manufacturer of Children's Tylenol are making changes to their OTC product. They will be no longer making the 80mg chewable tabs and only make 160mg chewable tabs to avoid dosing mistakes. The higher strength will be labeled with Children's Tylenol instead of Jr Tylenol since only one strength is available for kids. When using Children's Tylenol always check the strength before giving them to your children.
