SCKMC Prepares for Relay In May 1985, Dr. Gordon "Gordy" Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society. Friends, family, and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer. As he circled the track, he thought of how he could get others to take part. He envisioned having teams participate in a 24-hour fundraising event. The next year, 19 teams were part of the first Relay at the historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. Today, Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries. SCKMC has a long tradition of supporting our local Relay for Life event through corporate sponsorships, fundraising events, and relay teams made up of volunteer staff. This year’s team will be hosting at least two fundraiser events. Today team members will be making rounds throughout the hospital and clinics selling extra large cookies to staff. On June 3rd, the SCKMC Relay team will be hosting a garage sale made up of items donated by staff. The garage sale will be held from 8:00 a.m. until Noon inside the hospital’s Outpatient Services Building Conference Center. All funds raised will be donated to Relay for Life and any unsold donated items will be given to Angels in the Attic. Staff interested in donating to the sale may bring their items to the conference room beginning Thursday, June 1st. This year’s local Relay for Life event will be held on Friday, June 9th at the Agribusiness Building located at 712 W. Washington in Ark City. Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. and the event concludes at midnight. Anyone interested in joining SCKMC’s Relay for Life team, donating, or walking during the event should contact team captain Clayton Pappan at 441-5920 or e-mail: claytonp@sckrmc.org.
The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. The FDA just recently approved the first drug to treat spinal muscular atrophy in adults and children. This rare genetic disease affects muscle strength and movement and is often fatal. The new drug called Spinraza is injected into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. The most common side effects during clinical trials include respiratory infection and constipation. Using this new drug may cause low platelet count and toxicity to the kidneys.
Church Volunteers Hold Landscape Day Last month volunteers from Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ark City spent a Sunday afternoon trimming, pruning, mulching, weeding, and planting the various flower beds located around the hospital. Pastor Mark Boxman helped to organize the day’s activities. “The hospital is an attractive building. What a pleasure for a group of volunteers from our church to care for the landscaping,” Boxman said. In addition to the more than 40 hours of labor, Thrivent Financial donated $250 for the purchase of mulch, Boxman Lawn Service fertilized the lawn, and Lynn Boxman provided ornaments for the patient view flower beds. Hospital CEO Virgil Watson expressed his appreciation for the group’s efforts. “Our curb appeal is one thing we have going for us here at this hospital. If we can keep our curb appeal up to the point to where people drive up to our facility and it looks good, neat, and orderly that will give them a good first impression on what we are doing inside the building. Any kind of help that we can get, with as much property as we have, is a real blessing to us. I do appreciate the church volunteers and Boxman Lawn Service for coming out and helping us with this sizable contribution,” Watson said.
Specialty Clinic to Expand Services The SCKMC Specialty Clinic will be adding several physicians to its medical roster this summer. In addition, Dr. Jeryl Fullen orthopedic surgeon with Cowley County Orthopedic Services, and Dr. Patrick Bloedel general surgeon will both begin providing services through the medical center within the upcoming weeks.
